June 20, 2015: The Jay Firestone Q&A! The Dark Matter Boys’ Choir! Dark Matter links!

Jay Firestone, Dark Matter Executive Producer and President of Prodigy Pictures
Jay Firestone, Dark Matter Executive Producer and President of Prodigy Pictures

Well, as promised in a recent blog entry, I’d like to give you all a chance to get to know our extended Dark Matter family by bringing back the guest Q&A’s I used to do on Stargate.  For those not in the know, it works like this: I announce our blog guest after which you’ll have a few days to upload your questions to this blog’s comment section.  Days, maybe weeks later, our guest will drop by tho answer those questions in a dedicated blog entry! I thought it only appropriate that we kick things off with a key architect of the production: Dark Matter Executive Producer and President of Prodigy Pictures Jay Firestone.

As I’ve mentioned previously, you wouldn’t be watching this show if it wasn’t for Jay.  He put together the deal that got the show ordered, then assembled the prep, production, and post infrastructure that got this show made, and then was heavily involved in all aspects of said production, from casting through scripts to final edits.

If you’ve got questions for Jay – which I’m sure you do! – post them in the comment section.  I’ll be gathering them up and sending them his way Wednesday, so don’t delay!

Ladies and gentlemen, I proudly present… The Dark Matter Boys’ Choir:

Season 3 musical episode here we come!

Some interesting Dark Matter-related links:

“Dark Matter is a character-driven show that’s well-written and full of great dialogue. Only two hours in and I already feel like I know these people even though they don’t quite know themselves yet. ”

“This series has started with action, drama, humor and spaceships and I don’t mind saying that’s right up my street. ”

“The last theme of “Dark Matter” is being immersed in the mystery of the characters situations as we know only as much as they do. Finding out the facts and being on the same page as them gives us a more enriched understanding of the story. Because the audience has to constantly guess what will happen next, (as if they are a member of the group themselves), the viewer is going to keep on coming back to know more. Especially since each character has a complex past, which in light of it has to create a present persona. This style stages an interesting mystery for audience members to try and piece together week by week.”

“Dark Matter‘s second episode amped up the action from last week, as the crew found themselves in conflict with the Ferrous Corporation on the ground and in the sky.”

“Because I’ve been covering television for years, I have a bit of a suspicious streak when it comes to storylines. I’m always looking for the red herring, the twist, the other shoe to drop. Because of that, watching Episode 2 of Dark Matter turned into an exercise in conspiracy theories and experiments.”

“What makes Dark Matter unique and potentially great is its innovative exploration of human nature and the concept of being “born bad.”

Dark Matter episode #102 aired last night in North America and Australia.  What’d you all think? I’ll be rolling out the behind-the-scenes pics, vids, and tidbits in the coming days – once most of the rest of the world has caught up – but would love to hear your thoughts and theories!

SyFy’s Dark Matter Brings The Badass Ladies In Force:

Space Opera is Set for a New Dawn with Dark Matter:

“Dark Matter’s 13-episode first season is destined to be an action-packed mix of drama, humour and adventure in the mould of Stargate and Firefly. Any similarity to the former is not coincidental given that Mallozzi and Mullie have a long history with that franchise.”

Zoie Palmer Brings Dark Matter’s Android to Life:

“I’m always drawn to the underdog a little bit, I’m drawn to those characters that are a little bit outside, a little bit quirky, a little bit disconnected. I think there’s a ton of places you can go. Even on Lost Girl I think every character felt a little bit like an outsider. It was a group of outsiders. They all sort of found each other and connected in that way.”

Melissa O’Neil and Antony Lemke talk Dark Matter:

“When we started shooting, absolutely we were. We had read a number of episodes ahead as actors but one of the things that Joe and Paul did very, very well was keep secrets. Boy did they ever.”

Anthony Lemke talks Dark Matter:

“Thematically for the show, you have the two poles, in a way, of how to approach life,” Lemke explained. “We have the side that is very moral, and the other is very instrumental. Whatever you can do to live another day is kind of what my character is all about.”

“Dark Matter is poised to gallantly launch us all back into space and the visuals the show provides are a very big part of what makes this show so unique.”

I talk about the show with Greg David at TV, eh?:

“There is a lot of dark sci-fi out there that is great,” he explains. “But a lot of fans are missing a fun sci-fi series and there hasn’t been one on a ship-based show for awhile. We set out to make a fun show with a sense of humour while at the same time putting viewers on the edge of their seat every week.”

May 29, 2015: Two weeks to the Dark Matter world premiere! A Jelly update!

This blog's resident television critic: Akemi.
This blog’s resident television critic: Akemi.

“If this series not popular, I really can’t believe.”

– Akemi last night after watching the producer’s cut of episode #113, our season finale.

Her words echo the sentiments of my writing partner who said pretty much the same thing, in less economical fashion, after viewing prod cuts of our first two episodes:

“So, having seen the first two eps in close to finished form, I’m left thinking this: If this show doesn’t succeed, then I don’t know what people want. This is as good as television sci-fi gets. Seriously, if we don’t get a second season, then I should just retire and you should go to the Sorbonne and eventually open a restaurant.”

Well, I’m cautiously optimistic because, when it comes right down to it…

Me: I hope the show does well.

Akemi: Me too.  The dogs have to eat.

“What,”I’m sure you’ve been asking yourself, “are we to expect from Dark Matter?”  Well, for starters…

“We have a five-year game plan,” Mallozzi explains. “One of the things I think audiences will love is the fact that because we’ve been able to plan so well; we’re able to drop hints to various character reveals and various twists and turns that will pay off later down the line either near the end of season one or beyond it.”

Alas, there were many, many more crew members in attendance – but between all the drinking and snacking and execution of awesome dance moves, I didn’t have a chance to snap them all.  But I’ll miss them no less!

May 20, 2015: And that’s a wrap on Dark Matter’s first season!

The Dark Matter gang. I'm going to miss them!
The Dark Matter gang. I’m going to miss them!

Annnnnnd we’re done!  More or less.  I’ve still got my producer cuts of episode #112 and #113 to complete, all the mixes to sit through, and visual effects to approve but, for all intents and purposes, production on Dark Matter’s first season is complete.  It’s hard to believe that this time last year, I honestly didn’t think the show was going to happen.  And yet here I now sit, with 13 episodes under my belt, putting together a game plan for season 2.

I know, I know.  I should take some time off.  And I will.  Eventually.  I just want to be as prepared for season 2 as I was for season 1 – which allowed us to break all thirteen episodes inside of three weeks and have 12 of 13 scripts by the time we went to camera.  I already have beat sheets for our two part opener (#201 and #202), plus all eleven stories for the rest of the season, including all major arcs, character developments, twists, turns, and the BIG season 2 finale!

A message on my office whiteboard from...Melissa O'Neil?
A message on my office whiteboard from…Melissa O’Neil?

But I get ahead of myself.  First things first.  I have to finish up on season 1 and continue to get the word out in the lead up to the premiere.  To that end, I’ve been coordinating with the gang at SyFy to release all sorts of interesting Dark Matter-related tidbits.  For instance, just yesterday, i09’s Meredith Woerner showcased some of the show’s designs, including ships and space stations…

1Plenty of pics – with accompanying commentary by yours truly!  Head on over and check it out:

More to come in the coming days including goodies from the Dark Matter VFX department, another trailer, and sneak peek scenes from our series premiere!

April 17, 2015: Behind the scenes on your new favorite show – Dark Matter! And a Jelly update!

Because you asked, extra nicely, here’s a picture of Dark Matter’s Commander Truffault of the Mikkei Combine (Torri Higginson) standing alongside ONE (Marc Bendavid).  Wait.  Is that  the mess hall?  What is she doing onboard the ship?

Thanks to everyone who was inquiring about my elderly pug, Jelly.  She seemed kind of logy the other night.  But I’m pleased to report that she’s back to her old cantankerous self.  Akemi suspects she just may have eaten too much omelet.

Speaking of Akemi – she’s the birthday girl tomorrow!  We celebrate with couple’s massages, a trip to the sunglass shop, sushi dinner, and the director’s cut of episode #108!

April 11, 2015: Our Stargate Family Reunion continues on Dark Matter!

Well, well, well.  Look who it is.  Director Martin Wood (Stargates SG-1 and Atlantis) hits the streets of Toronto – in his trademark shorts.  Yes, if there are two thing I remember about Martin Wood from our days on Stargate, it’s: 1) His penchant for wearing shorts year round, and 2) His onscreen cameo character, Major Wood, always lugged around a giant wrench.

Alas, no giant wrench on Dark Matter (but who knows?  We’ve yet to shoot his episode, #111) but the shorts are still in full effect!

We had our final (?) notes session with Executive Producer Jay Firestone the other day.  Soon after, we made the necessary changes and released our season finale, episode #113.  As I may have mentioned, I want to approach each season as a instalment in a book series.  And so, #113 offers answers to many of the questions we set up over the course of our initial 13 episode journey and includes one HUGE reveal.  But I made a point of scripting it in a way that keeps the mystery reveal a secret…until our very last day of production.  A LOT of theories swirling around set right now…

B 1st Assistant Camera Marcel Janisse enjoys lunch in the infirmary’s isolation chamber.

I’m thinking it’s high time for another mailbag.  If you’ve got questions about the show, post away.  I’ll answer later in the week.

I’m also thinking of doing one of those reddit AMA’s.  How do they work?
