On the nutritional benefits of fish: “The tail is good for you can run fast.  The head is good for your brain.  The eyes are good for you eyes.  Your eyes are getting bad so you should eat eyes.”  – Akemi, August 20 2011.

I had a song stuck in my head all day today.

I suppose it’s only fitting given that, in the episode, Spongebob is infected by an earworm that burrows into his brain and “addicts” him to this catchy tune. Well, the song, Musical Doodle by The Sonars, IS catchy.  So catchy, in fact, that I feared I’D been infected by the earworm.  I found myself humming it all day – until I finally looked the lyrics up online and actually started singing:

“Round and round the record spins all day.

Listen again it takes you far away.

Trying to stop it is futile.

So just listen now to my musical doodle!

Doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo.”

Etc.

Sadly, the song is unavailable for download on iTunes.  What’s with that?!

Anyway, if you were foolish enough to listen to the tune, you’ve no doubt become infected by now as well.  Sorry about that.  There’s nothing you can do now but spread the joy.  Indoctrinate your friends and family to the Musical Doodle masses!

Doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo-doo!

So I was driving to work the other day and noticed I was driving behind this truck –

Note the plate!  Mere coincidence?  I don’t think so!

Tomorrow, Akemi, Carl, Karen (and possibly Alexander and Sarah) and I will be going to the CNE (Canadian National Exhibit) NOT to check out the shows or the concerts, the rides or events – but to sample some of the weirdest culinary treats this side of the southern U.S.  Among the items I’m looking forward to trying tomorrow: deep fried vanilla fudge on a stick, deep fried mac and cheese, whipped sweet butter deep fried in funnel cake batter, and something called The Luthor – a cheeseburger with two glazed Krispy Kreme doughnuts in place of the mundane traditional bun.  Kind of reminds me of the time I sampled “the triple down”: https://josephmallozzi.com/2010/10/22/october-22nd-the-return-of-the-weird-food-purchase-of-the-day-a-little-something-i-like-to-call-the-triple-down-and-another-au-revoir/

  1. Oh yum,,doo, doo, can’t wait,,doo, doo,,what is that dooooooooo,??!?!?, WFP if back!! yum. and ick,,no eyes,,ahh my eyes!!!

  2. Oh, the weird medical purchase of the day is one of my favorites!!! 😀 Can’t wait for more The Weird Food Purchases of the Day! I had given up home we would even seen one again. You have made me a happy, happy fangirl today, Joe. Thank you! 😀

  3. Mwah hah hah! I did NOT listen to the song. But I have had Man of La Mancha stuck in my head for most of the day. Not the whole musical, just Don Quixote singing “Hear me now ,oh though bleak and unbearable world…” etc.

Thanks for sharing those old weird food purchase clips. I especially like you and Carl sampling the hot sauce. You are truly devious.

  4. Oh, my God, Joe! Hope you stock up on Zantac (generic: ranitidine), Dramamine (meclyzine or the other kind), and GasX (simethicone). Just reading about tommorrow’s plan nearly caused a relapse of gastritis (diagnosed last week after two months of symptoms).

Please forgive a brief whine, folks. I’m finally feeling better, but it appears my diet will be even more restricted. My food sensitivites, first diagnosed in 2005, seem to be increasing. I may even have to COOK…FROM SCRATCH. *shudder*

Please give Max some extra love on my behalf, Joe.

  5. What’s interesting about that “Stargate” truck is that round thing sticking up over the top. Wonder what that could be…

Great. Now I’m singing… “doo doo doo doo doo-do doodle…”

  6. Joe, are you going through withdraw form Stargate like the rest of us? I check everyday to see if there is some good news. I know it would be a miracle, but hey, stranger things have happened…..

  7. Yay! Weird food is coming back! I loved that bit.

    Akemi is hilarious. 😆

That’s all I have energy for – cleaned the house, did laundry, and tackled some yard work. Edged along the curb with an old-timey edger (the kind that requires muscles, not gas or electric), and pulled grass out of the street where the curb meets the asphalt. I am so anal I even swept the street when I was done…I swear I looked like something out of Oliver Twist.

What I didn’t get to was my ever-growing pile of reading. 😛

Have a good night, sir – and if you happen upon a deep fried oreo, hunt down a strip of bacon and wrap it around that sucker and tell me what you think! I swear it’s just about the best thing I’ve ever tasted. 🙂

    das

  8. PS – and no way am I going to watch/listen to that video. Wanna know why? Well, I’m gonna tell you anyway. 🙂 See…there was this time I stumbled upon the Wiggles while switching channels, and sat there – mesmerized – for lord knows how long watching those creepy guys sing kiddie songs. It was like crack, or something. 😛

    das

  9. Hubby wanted me to thank you for getting him started singing the Musical Doodle. 🙂 Seriously though, we could probably quote more Sponge Bob songs than that. Our kids both like watching it.

That food all sounds good! Hope you have fun tomorrow.

    Have a good night!!!

  10. i just watched all those videos… how horrifying… that last medicinal one was real torture… lol

it’s going to be hard to top those weird food purchases.

  11. Oh oh a SG meet up at the CNE then?? Just joking. Have fun, because it is going to rain…

And joe forgot to mention the Deep Fried coke!

  12. Joe I know what you mean. I got hooked on this song surfing through the satelite and stopped on the Barbie Channel. Heaven help me, I know all the words!

    Barbie’s, Get Your Sparkle On.

  13. Yep, The Weird Food Purchase of the Day returns in fine fashion.

cool! does that mean we get video of someone’s reaction to said weird food?

  14. Hooray for the imminent return of WFPOTD! That medicinal WFPOTD was my all-time favorite.

You should listen to Akemi — Perhaps you can find some deep-fried fish eyes at CNE.

Doo-doo-doo-doo-doo…. (Thanks a whole lot for sharing that. But I suppose you did give fair warning.) On a related note, you haven’t lived until you’ve watched Spongebob in Irish (Gaelic).

  15. @Gilder Sorry to hear about your tummy diagnosis. Cooking from scratch is a pain, but I’m sure you will feel better doing it.

Love the Stargate truck. Did I ever share with you about the daycare here called Stargate on Honea-Egypt Road? I have a picture of it. I’ll try to find the link.

You guys have pretty funny songs playing in your head.

We took Patrick to the museum & planetarium for the first time today for like 3 hours. He wouldn’t sit in the reclining stairs, but fortunately they had a few regular desk chairs and we let him sit in one of those. He liked the interactive displays where he could push buttons, but when we started looking in the “gem” section, and specifically the area where jewelry was on display, he grabbed my hand and desperately looked for an exit. I laughed hysterically. Typical male.

  16. LOL My DD likes to listen to Sponge Bob in Spanish. I think I’ll post that on her wall so she gets infected.
October approaches. What are you doing about keeping Akemi in Canada? Now that you have a blog spot for her, surely you cannot let her leave. 🙁

  17. A Stargate plate on a truck? Are you kidding me? How cool that you saw it. And were able to take a picture while driving. 😀

Love the Akemi-isms. For my sister-in-law & brother’s first wedding reception in Taiwan, she chose as one of the entrees steaming plates of fish-heads. (Remember that song? That should start another “ear worm.”) Akemi, please-oh-please tell us about funny things that Joe has said in Japanese? It’s only fair, right? Then you two can have a He said/She said column in the blog.

    And now…

More blog freaky-tude! 😯 (It is getting weird.) Do you know I almost posted my ear worms last night? And the number of hours I spent on YouTube listening to derivatives? (Two stinkin’ hours, but they were a lot of fun.) SO….! I felt completely innoculated by both songs stuck in my head, that I listened to Sponge Bob. And yep, still hearing the oldies but goodies.

But, hey! Why not share the joy? These are fun, pub-crawling songs sung by some really great guys. Two weeks ago I saw the movie Robin Hood (with Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett) on TV. Robin’s band of ruffian friends can sang! In harmony, even. I knew Mr. Crowe had his own band (Thirty Odd Foot of Grunts, TOFOG), but Robin and his Merry Men are all friends in real life and sing together in public. They had a whale of a time for the press junkets promoting the movie. It made me think of the old Stargate camaraderie. Oh, man…

Here are the three guys singing the sea shanty “Roll, Me Bully Boys” from the movie, and Russell Crowe joining them acapella in “Beautiful Girl.”

(Also, look for “Merry Men press junket interview #2” for background re: Alan Doyle writing the sea shanty on the spot, at the 0:40 second mark.)

  18. @ponytail–Evil song. It drives me crazy when I hear it. Maybe I should just lose that particular disc at my house.

    Spongebob is so addictive anyway.

Deep fried twinkies. Deep fried butter. I think I saw someone wanted to deep fry a hamburger. It’ll be interesting what the LA County Fair people come up with this year. None of this I can eat though. Probably a good thing.

  19. Joe, there’s this great site: http://www.zamzar.com – if you enter the youtube URL and your email address on their website, you can pick a format and after a few hours they’ll email you a download link to the file which they’ve converted to audio only for you. You could get yourself a handy MP3 of that tune that you can then use to infect even more people. Set it as your ringtone! Set it as Carl’s ringtone! Make everyone hate you forever and ever!

  20. Hi,

maybe this will cure your earworm suffering by placing a natural enemy of the earworm: another earworm…

  21. DEEP FRIED BUTTER!! Whew not sure what got in to me.
I’m looking forward to all the food but will not be trying the 1500 calorie Buber/donut combination.
    Enjoy 🙂

  22. I’ve been grazing the pantry and the fridge, because we leave for Burning Man in a week, and we try to get all the perishables and open food eaten up. Our housesitters are notorious for letting the fresh food spoil and gorging on cardboard pizzas from the back of the deep freeze. I have fresh picked currants and no clue what to do with them. I made currant vodka last year.

I have Uriah Heep’s The Wizard stuck in my head. A doodle song would kill me now. Soon enough it will be oontz oontz oontz 24/7. And the Dreaded Dreadful Dub-step of Doom.

  23. no way I’m listening to that song. And earworms aren’t the big thing to worry about. It’s the brain eating amoebas lurking in various waterways that I’ve decided singal the ocming apocolypse. Meantime, off to catch Jason M. in Conan. Hope it does well though it looks like it’s not getting the biggest of releases: 2 2d and 2 3d showings a day, vs. the multi theater viewings of some of the bigger blockbusters.

  24. Hate to burst your bubble, Joe, but the stargate trailers are fairly common around here. They’re made in Mississauga. They have a website http://www.stargatetrailers.ca/

@Akemi keep up the great work on the breakfast boxes!

    Elminster

  25. @ for the love of Beckett – Thanks for those videos! I really enjoyed Crowe’s Robin Hood. I have about two dozen shanty CDs…which means either I really love shanties, or I’m a little soft in the head. 😛

Those songs reminded me of a little ditty sung by the lovely, and oh so talented, Jack White…

  26. hi, joe,

i just wanted to say that i *very* much appreciated how you hinted at sam and jack being together in season 4 of Atlantis. the pictures on sam’s desk (s/j fishing), and sam’s more private jack pic in her room, and the wonderful (but deleted) ‘trio’ scene… that’s a LOT more than what was done with them in sgu…

i wonder how long it takes to stop being bitter? :p

btw, i don’t think mgm exists anymore. i think it’s just some letters now… probably stands for ‘make-believe generic moniker’ or something :p

  27. Stargate Trailers; trailers to the stars!! Maybe you guys should go pay a visit to the company-if you drive back West instead of flying you can make an adventure of it, see how many weird food places and Stargate-themed sites you can visit between Toronto and Vancouver.
