Hey!  Look who dropped by the production offices today!  Bugsy and Marilyn!  And, oh yeah, Peter Kelamis (SGU’s Adam Brody) who tagged along with his lovely wife Alannah.

Peter and Marilyn.

Also dropping by the office this afternoon…

Hey, it's Julia Benson (SGU's Lieutenant Vanessa James).

Actor Jamil Walker Smith (SGU's Master Sergeant Ronald Greer) is speechless.

Today, we broke Linda’s story (episode 13), which explores the relationship of two of my very favorite characters, and also discussed the Awakening blue draft.  I had a major breakthrough on that tricky opening scene and finally got some work done on episode 10, Resurgence.  I would have accomplished more but was forced to leave early after receiving several complaints that my boisterous disposition was interrupting the hallowed solemnity of the DVD commentary being recorded down the hall.  On my way out, I poked my head into Ashleigh’s office to say goodnight and she responded with a whisper so hushed you’d think she was hiding out from a serial killer.  Honestly, is this what our work environment has come to?  A place where the production of DVD extras takes precedence over artistic expression, animated debate, and uproarious laughter at a video of Jean Claude Van Damme’s futile attempts to hide his untimely erection on Brazilian t.v.: http://www.cracked.com/article_15819_5-movie-martial-artists-that-lost-deathmatch-to-dignity_p3.html.

And what did you accomplish today?

Back by popular demand – the mailbag…

RebeccaH writes: “Do you ever wonder if human beings got smarter because they ate smart animals?”

Answer: No, but there is anecdotal evidence that suggests certain animals got smarter because they ate humans.  Apparently, scientists have discovered a cluster of wicked scrabble-playing komodo dragons in Indonesia.

Maggiemayday writes: “The pig’s head probably tastes better than it sounds.”

Answer: Guess I’ll find out tomorrow night.

tiki god writes: “is there any hope for a stargate tech manual or blueprint set?”

Answer: There’s always hope – especially if the studio feels there’s a market for it.  Let ’em know you’re interested!

Charlene writes: “I’m sure SGU will do wonderfully and find an audience all it’s own but I will miss the others and will hold out hope that some new show will come on that captures the essence of what the SG1 and SGA characters did.”

Answer: Looking forward to hearing your opinion after the back half has aired.

crazymom1 writes: “Did you see Bourdain’s “Obsessed” episode? I think the two of you should get together and eat pig sometime.”

Answer: Sure.  Have him drop me an email the next time he’s in town.

K8T writes: “I don’t usually eat the crab or lobster when we go out for family dinner, IMO it’s too much work for the reward.”

Answer: Ah, but the beauty of ordering the king crab at Sun Suit Wah – as you can see by the photos – is that they cut it up for you before serving.  All you have to do is scoops and eat.

Jadeski writes: “Is Akemi still in Perth? If so, how’s she surviving?”

Answer: Akemi is eating a lot of pizza and, apparently, weathering a recent rainstorm.   She’s settled in, made friends, but is looking forward to making a return trip to Vancouver in the coming months.

Rich S writes: “People used to eat that in the past because they had to and couldnt afford to waste anything, you dont have to any more, we are affluent Westerners :p”

Answer: So maybe stick to hot dogs?

Thornyrose writes: “And have you by chance any idea of when you might do your road trip, and which part of the country/countries you may drive through?”

Answer: Nope, it’s still up in the air – as is my annual Tokyo trip since production will take us to the end of November.

Major D. Davis writes: “1. Is Rob directing Aftermath?

2. Is Will directing Awakenings?”

Answer: No and no.

Gen writes: “Making the rounds today is a memo written by David Mamet from when he was executive producer on “The Unit”, addressed to the writers on the show: http://www.movieline.com/2010/03/david-mamets-memo-to-the-writers-of-the-unit.php

Was just wondering if you had seen it, and had any thoughts.”

Answer: Love it.  I’ve always been a firm believer that, when it comes to writing, “less is more” and that the audience doesn’t need to be spoonfed every detail of a story in order to enjoy it.  Viewers are much smarter than most give them credit for and they enjoy the challenge of a developing storyline.

DasNdanger writes: “1. Did you ever check out that cheeseburger site? If not, you gotta! http://www.cheeseandburger.com/

2. How’s the aches and pains today?? I’ve noticed that you didn’t start complaining about pain until you amped up your workout. Have you taken it down a notch, just to see if that helps?

3. How’s mom and sis?

4. How’s Carl?

5. Refresh my memory – what are the flavors you do NOT like? I know mint is one, and I thought maybe lime/citrus…but I’m drawing a blank on the rest.

6. A loooooong time ago I asked if you would share your baby/childhood pics with us…any chance of seeing one or two anytime soon?

7. Do you like the smell of puppy feet?”

Answers: 1. Yes, I did.  And I’ve bookmarked the site.  Thanks.  This weekend, I’m making me a Miss Daisy.

2. I’ve switched up my workout, focusing more on cardio and losing weight training entirely in favor of bodyweight crossfit training.  Still a little achy.

3. Sis is fine.  Mom is back in the hospital (as of last night) dealing with an ulcer.

4. Carl is well.  He handed in his first draft of The Greater Good this afternoon.  I invited him out for pig head tomorrow night but he refused.  You think he’s mad at me?

5. Flavors of what exactly?  If it’s chocolate, I steer clear of mint and anything with fruit or liquor filling.  If it’s ice cream, same thing – except for the liquor part.

6. I’ll have to dig some up next time I’m in Montreal.

7. Sure.  Jelly’s feet smell like Doritos.

Narelle from Aus writes: “Ever made/had Blue Swimmer Crab Spaghettini?”

Answer: I haven’t.  But I want some now.

Harold writes: “are you guys ever looking for suggestions for the show?”

Answer: If you’re asking whether we’re looking for new writers, the answer is no, we’ve got a pretty full roster this season.

60 thoughts on “March 24, 2010: Oh, a whole bunch o’ stuff including the return of the mailbag!

  1. Sorry to hear about MamaMallozzi. Please do convey our best to her…and of course, enquiring minds hope to hear of how she is getting along.

Re: Hot dogs. well, unless one specifies pure beef, etc., the stuff in hot dogs can include but is not limited to beef lips, etc., which astounded me when I finally read a label.

  2. I’d be interested in a Stargate Technical Manual. It could go right along with my classic Star Fleet Technical Manual.

  3. What did I do today? I finished a draft 2 days early. That’s what I did. Someone asked for it to be 1 day early, so maybe just 1 day … whatever, I’m stoked to actually finish something early.

It involves Atlantis, but there’s an oil painting from the 1994-ish that says you can’t sue us. Oh, yeah, I’m pretty sure the Homeric references are public domain by now so we can still be amicable. And that Spongebob movie … Atlantis Squarepantis … okay, irrelevant, but I don’t know what to do with myself after finishing something early.

  4. Hey, love the pic’s of KLAM!! My war of the words sparing partner!! Such a cool and nice guy, what a riot!! Hey Joe, he needs more dialog and a BIGGER part!! Sheryl.

  5. Gonna have to be quick – I’ve been totally absorbed in this NCIS marathon, and my favorite was just on but I had to record it because I was behind because I had to make dinner earlier, and now I wanna watch the news and I gotta check on the kitties, and Mr. Das just wandered off to bed, and…oh, you don’t care. 😛

Thanks for the Boner vid! 😆 What a pig!

Thanks for the update on Akemi, I was wondering how she was making out, too. I’ll have to look over the rest of the mailbag in the morning, over coffee.

And thanks so much for answering my questions! SO glad you liked that burger site – it made me sooo hungry for a burger the first time I saw it, I went right out and got me a bigarse bacon bleu burger just to ‘slake my lust’ as Barbossa would say…though I don’t think he was talking about burgers… 😛

Sorry to hear about mom. 🙁 I’ll keep her in my prayers. I just hope these trips to the hospital don’t break her spirit – setbacks have a way of doing that. Did you say you’re going home for the holiday? If so, I’m sure it will be a comfort to her.

As far as ‘flavors’ go – I just remember you whining about certain tastes/flavors you don’t care for – mint was one, and I thought lemon or tart flavors…but I can’t remember. It was just something that came to mind after the pig head thing. I was all like, ‘Geez…what won’t this guy eat??!’

And I agree – puppy feet (and cat feet…as long as they haven’t been in a litter pan) smell great! Sleepy kitty feet smell like popcorn to me. I’ve always wanted to smell tiger feet, but I figure it would cost me my head.

Hmmm…I wonder what Wraith feet smell like… 😉 (If it’s anything like my own, I’ll pass! 😛 )

And that wasn’t quick at all.

    Have a good night, sir!

    das

  6. Thanks for the updates and the SGA photos, loved them as usual and particularly happy to see Dr Z!!!!!!
Hope your mom will be OK, sending her my thoughts and best wishes.

  7. An interesting theory I once read said that animal domestication only happened when we could nab the slowest and the stupidest of a herd, pack, etc. And then after we inbred the hell out of them, I don’t reckon you could claim we were eating the smartest of the species.

  8. What sort of ulcer has your Mum got? Hope she mends quickly.

If it’s an external ulcer please don’t dismiss Manuka Honey. My Gran contracted Golden Staph through an ulcer and even with hyperbaric chamber treatments (we have a photo of Gran with a hyperbaric chamber suit on which could only be described as Gold) and every medication you could think of, 3 years later it was still getting worse. We decided to give honey a go when the doctors weren’t making any progress. It halted the growth of it and had begun to shrink. Unfortunately she didn’t get a chance to see if it would fully heal it.

Blue Swimmer Crab is super easy to make at home. I keep it pretty simple. Garlic, shallots, chilli, healthy dose of olive oil, lemon juice, pepper, crab. Touch of parmesan if you feel it needs it. Angel hair pasta goes well or a saffron spaghettini.
Simple, quick and good for you.
A nice bowl of greens similar to what you had pictured yesterday makes a nice side dish.

    Have a good night.

  9. A “whole bunch o’ stuff” is right! Thanks for a blog chalked full of goodies!

I remember Marilyn and Bugsy in Peter Kelamis’ Q&A was it? Cute dogs!

My crazy Beagle puppy’s feet don’t stink yet. But my last dog’s feet smelt like Fritos. Ha! that is so funny. Wonder why they smell like that?

Tell your mom we are still asking/thinking about her. Hope she feels better real soon.

  10. Hi Joe, some of those burgers looked amazing! Like you, the Miss Daisy caught my eye, as did The Waldorf. The Havana looked interesting – a Cuban sandwich with a hamburger patty! We’ll do one or two of those this weekend, as well. Yum.

I’m all Stargated out tonight, so watching ST DS9 instead. What a wonderful show it was, my favorite Star Trek ever.

Hope your mom feels better in no time. Please tell her I send her a big hug 🙂

  11. Sweettttt!!!! Pics of the cast. Thank you sooooooooooo much!!!!!!!!

Dang, that sucks. Hospitals suck. I hope Mrs. Mallozzi gets well soon!!

    Ugghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhyhuhyhuu.

I guessed both directors wrong. How will I ever find redemption. I used to guess all the directors last year. Darn.

    Ok. Another try.

    Is Will Waring directing aftermath??

    Thanks so much,
    Major D. Davis

  12. Re: Drop ins

Did you let Peter Kelamis escape without agreeing to a Q&A? What about Julia Benson? Jamil Walker Smith? Did you let them all slide by? Did they flee in terror? What?

  13. Well, if you hear of an ambulance wreck on the eastern seaboard tomorrow/later today, take comfort in that it’s your fault. You just had to post before I went to bed, and I just had to look at the links. Got to say the JCVD video was a hoot. My dog is less impressed as I woke her up from a perfectly good doze with the laughter. And that bacon mug filled with cheddar sounds like an evil idea to try out at work one weekend. Outstanding links as always.
Loved the mailbag as well. Sorry to hear about your mother, and hope it’s a short hospitalization and without complications. You even managed doggie pics, even though it’s not the usual band of rogues. The people pics were nice too.
Thanks for the great post, even if it means I have to ingest obscene amounts of caffeine tomorrow to function properly. I suppose it’s the least I can do given your sacrifice of time to keep us entertained.

  14. I’m auditioning for the part of a marine for SGU tomorrow. Wish me a broken leg. 🙂

  15. well that whole sgu contest thing was kinda poorly conceived, and i cant draw for crap.

  16. Oh no. An ulcer. Hope she gets better fast.

Jamil really likes his photo taken and posted in your blog. He is very photogenic too. Keep up the good work.

Yay. One of my all time favorite episodes, Ghost in the Machine. Thanks for posting that one.

  17. just when I tought winter was over, its starting to get cold here AGAIN!
my skin is super dry, I’ve got freeze burn on my face. I’m really mad about this….I was meant to live on a tropical island….Maybe someone will feel sorry for me and fly me for free over there. 😀

  18. Opps, meant to say thanks for the pix of Peter and Alannah and the pups…sooo cute, ALL of them.

  19. As always, thanks for the blog! Especially today’s set of SG:A pics. I started the countdown to Apr2/new SGU a few weeks back. Hope that Mama Mallozzi makes a speedy exit from the hospital (my own mama is in the hospital, but for very different reasons). I would love to help you taste-test that hog’s head–my DH is a timid eater, and I’ll try anything at least once! I was born and raised in Alabama, so any chance to try the “whole hog” is a welcome opportunity. If you pass through Seattle on your possible road trip, I’d be glad to join you for breakfast/brunch/lunch/dinner/dessert–let us know where you plan to stop! (I promise not to be an obnoxious fan, I’m too shy to do that)

Answer: So maybe stick to hot dogs?”

Ah the humble hot dog, dont eat those myself, they are more an American thing but they can pretty much contain anything, a pulverised version of the head and hooves for example 🙂

It was supposed to be a humorous comment also (note the :p ), my attempt may have failed to register, sorry

My father used to enjoy stewing pigs trotters for instance and when I was a young I do remember people having trays of chitlins and tripe which they would eat with salt and vinegar. I haven’t seen that around for years though. That would gbe something for the WFPOTD……

  21. Love the ‘Diva’ collar that Marilyn has. 😀

Peter has such a looong hair. How much did you pay attention that the cast’s look matches with the end of S1?

  22. Oh, Joe.

So sorry to hear your Mom is back in the hospital. Hope she’s feeling better soon.

Thank you for sharing the photos of your office visitors and the photos from SGA.

    Best wishes.

  23. First off I’m so sorry to hear your mother is back in hospital. Ulcers are nasty. My Mum had leg ulcers last year and we had to put compression bandages on her legs etc. So sending positive thoughts for a speedy recovery. I’m thinking of you too, can’t be easy being away from home when loved ones are sick….so *hugs*

Now JCVD…..omg….that is the most hilarious, bizarre vid I’ve seen in a while…thx for sharing, wish I worked at your workplace – so much fun. I don’t understand why they don’t record the audio commentaries in a special screening room away from the offices……

Q: Joe, do you ever bring notes into the audio commentary recording or do you just let it flow?

Q: Bugsy and Marilyn….are they brother and sister? I forgot. Very cute dogs.

Thx for the Atlantis love…I particularly love the annoyed look you’re getting from Joe F – AWESOME! He’s sooo funny. The pic of David N is gorgeous – love the colouring.

    Cheers, Chev

  24. Today, we broke Linda’s story (episode 13)

Well that was clumsy of you….hehe…hope you hastily put it back together on the shelf.

Oh I meant to post a response about your Pig head last night…..I couldn’t do it unless it was a survival situation. I don’t really like to see dinner staring at me.

Q: So what’s your fave part of a Pig head? My money would be on you eating the ears and tongue.

Q: How many weeks behind are we on Survivor: Heroes v Villians? We just had a double-episode where James injured his leg, Tom and Russell found the Idols and Cirie got what was coming to her.

    Cheers, Chev

  25. @Das,

Thank you for sharing the single greatest site in the history of the internets!

This is the Eden which is spoken of in the Bible. The Shangri-La; the Promised Land and the Valhalla if you will, of gastronomic goodness. Let all other sites bow to its greatness. I’m making the Fire Station #5 burger this weekend.

    I think I’m tearing up a little…

  26. Hi Mr M!

Please send our best wishes to Mamma Mallozzi from the Emerald Isle. We’ll keep her in our thoughts and prayers. Ulcers of any description are not fun. Speedy Recovery!!

..did you say DVD COMMENTARY? *hint hint* *Cough..mention a blog regular…Cough*……..

And finally, great to see all the gang back together again for S2 of SGU.

Sadly, it looks like we here in Ireland will be kicking off second half of Season 1 on April 13th, and so there’ll be over a week to catch up to US, so it’ll be intermittent sneaks onto the blog, to avoid spoilers.

Am reading “The Love We Share Without Knowing”….hmmmm…….will be interested in the discussion.

    Best to all

    *cough…..DVD Commentary……cough*

    S’n’T

  27. @herb

    Got my fingers crossed!! 😉

Well we’ve got Peter and Jamil to do a Q&A, so that leaves Julia. Do you think you could persuade Julia do to a Q&A???

    Thanks so much,
    Major D. Davis

  28. @Shirt’n’Tie

What does a blog regular and a DVD commentary have to do with each other? What did I miss?

    Thanks so much,
    Major D. Davis

  29. can I just say I’ve just watched Shutter Island and it was definitely not what I expected. Kept me guessing till the last 20 minutes and I had the 6th sense figured out within 5 🙂 Highly recommended

  30. Das: love the cheeseburger site.

    herbertsommerfeld: break a leg!

Narelle: do you cook your own crab? If so, do you throw it in boiling water like a lobster? I don’t know if I could handle the guilt 😳 .

Mr. M, so sorry about your mom! I hope she feels better soon. Does she have to go on a special diet (eek)?

  31. Hi Joe! I have a question about the directors for season 2. Will Felix Alcala and/or Alex Chapple direct any episodes in the second season?

  32. Fantastic GiTM photos – Especially the behind the scenes and Sheppard ones… Thank you so much for sharing.

  33. Joe: Hope your mom’s ulcer heals soon.

Break a leg Herb! We are all rooting for you to get the part.

  34. i’ve just watched the episode Time again and I am now convinced that TJ has a thing for Eli! Am I right or wrong? I’ve mentioned this to you before, but you didn’t answer, maybe not wanting to give anything away perhaps? If it is a no, then a simple no would do, but the absence of an answer suggests to me that there is something there in the theory, and you don’t want to admit it just yet, but your silence only confirms this…this is just a theory by the way. Another theory is that TJ doesn’t have a thing for Eli, but for Chloe instead!

    Either of these right?

Oh yes, I also can’t wait for the series to return!!!

  35. I love the cheeseandburger site. I want a Highwayman.
    Right NOW!

Ok, so I can’t have one right now, but I’m very creative and they have a guide to how it is made.

Okay, I hereby declare this weekend the CHEEZEBURGER WEEKEND. (You wanna eat healthy? Tough! :D)

  36. Tammy – I buy my crab de-shelled.

I’m not a big meat eater of any sort due to the guilt factor. Growing up with people who had farms gave me a reality check early in life as to where our food comes from.

I wonder how much of the world would remain meat eaters if they had to hunt and kill it themselves. Don’t think there would be such an obesity problem that’s for sure! Ever tried to catch a lamb, cow, chicken? That’s some serious exercise.

  37. I’m so with you on the flavors with chocolate thing – I want my chocolate for the chocolate, not mint or fruit, etc.

Can you explain the script colors (like you mentioned a “blue draft”), please? Thank you

  38. I should have said, rather, “WILL you please explain the colors?” because I know you CAN. ;p

  39. Come on! I was looking at the SyFy schedule and the Caprica episode is “Ghosts in the Machine”. Gimme a break.

  40. Hello Joe,

I have a question for you (I don’t know if you’ll answer it in another mailbag or if you’ll answer it at all but I have to ask anyway).
I’ve read a few minutes ago that there are going to be comics based on the Stargate universe (not SGU). I knew there were going to be comincs based on Vala’s character but now I’ve read that they (or “he” since the name mentionned is Brandon Jerwa) are going to pull a Buffy and make a season 11 for SG1 and a season 6 for Atlantis as comics.
Now my question is this: is it true? Have you heard anything about it?
If you have, won’t the SGA season 6 comics spoil the events from SGA Extinction thus even more jeopardising the movie?
If the comics ever happen, will any of the Stargate writing team be involved?
Okay so that wasn’t only one question, sorry.
I’m putting the link where I found the news (in French) so you can see for yourself:
    http://www.allocine.fr/article/fichearticle_gen_carticle=18593280.html
Given the art cover shown in the article, I am a bit worried.
Anyways, I hope you are well.
    Regards,
    Chris B.

  41. Narelle: yes, I have the guilt thing too. Have you seen the movie Julie & Julia? The part where Julie has to boil the lobster-that would so be me 😀 !

However, sometimes a cheeseburger calls my name. 🙄

  42. My comment re the pig’s head was going to be be, “I guess that means you haven’t tried Criminal Minds? Because the eps To Hell…And Back would put anyone off pork for good.” Then I remembered that damn pig farm was right there in BC. Blech! Well, your intestinal fortitude is already well beyond diplomatic mission levels.

  43. Wow
Thanks for posting some SGA pics.
    Wow again.
You posted some Joe Flanigan’s pics thanks for it.

  44. @Major D Davis

Some time ago, I suggested that Mr M hold a competition and the winner of which would get a shout out on the DVD Commentary of an ep of SGU. It’s a bit like (though not as cool) as the naming of Anne Teldy….
Anyway, Mr M responded saying it was a great idea.
Currently, the DVD commentaries are being done and well….I’m just casually reminding him of same….though if I keep it up I suspect I’ll be “airlocked”.

    *cough Nothing to see…move along…*

  45. I think it would be great to hear the sounds of productivity in the background of commentary. I mean, sure, I always find commentary itself very interesting, but uproarious laughter and talking in the background would totally add to the behind-the-scenes feel 😉

Hey, I have a food question for you. I’m in Montreal for the week and I’m wondering if there are any restaurants you would recommend going to for dinner? And/or any sights worth seeing this time of year?

    Amz/Amy

  46. Hello Joe.

Sorry to hear about your mom. Please send her our best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Thanks for the Atlantis photos! I hope we see the cast again some time soon.

    Best Wishes.

  47. tiki god writes: “is there any hope for a stargate tech manual or blueprint set?”

Answer: There’s always hope – especially if the studio feels there’s a market for it. Let ‘em know you’re interested!

My friends and I have been waiting for a tech manual to come out. It would match my star wars and star trek manual. Star Gate manual would be awesome!

How would we let them know if we are interested?

I think a simple way for this if they put a poll on stargate.mgm.com for possible products like the tech manual.

Also any status on Blu-ray of SG-1 and Atlantis? I have spent a lot on a blu-ray setup and I would love to experience the series on blu-ray. I have all the movies on blu-ray, also all the movies on dvd, and the series on dvd.

Amazon.com has a nifty thing, they list stargate atlantis blu-ray and customer can sign up to be notified when it is available. That way amazon gets a quote of how many they will most likely sell and customer gets notified when it will be available.

Thanks for the great series! I am excited for second part of SGU!

  48. The Tech Manual should cover SG1 up to SGU and the Stargate movies including the original one.
