I posted the following poll over on X and these are the results so far…

Yes, I do agree it depends on the programming.  Comedies and episodic series lend themselves to the longer runs while more serialized shows fare better as shorter runs.  But for me, personally, the answer is…

As a viewer: 6-8

As a series creator: 10-13

As a writer landing a gig on someone else’s show: 20+

Sat in the airport, waiting for my (delayed) flight to Montreal.  My carry-on is weighted with frozen foods and baked goods – honey-garlic and Italian sausages, pikerel burgers, beef cheeks, braising sauce, two dozen store-bought amaretti, a dozen home-made chocolates and cookies from Akemi – in addition to some chocolate bars, my laptop and accessories, and a Medley Chew bag of Oh My Dogness dog treats!

Finally took off 45 minutes late.  And then, partway through the flight…

I grabbed this from the complimentary in-flight snack basket thinking they were peanuts.

I believe it’s what they feed the less choosey livestock.

Finally…

  1. Fava beans. Aren’t those the same ones that drove Hannibal Lecter to cannibalism?

  2. I would have ordered a nice Chianti just for the flight attendant’ reaction.

  3. For season episodes, 10–13 is good for me nowadays. 6-8 leaves me feeling cheated if it’s a good series. And it has to be if I’ve watched that far in.

  4. I mostly watch mysteries/crime drama on British (or Brit-related) tv, and I dislike it when a good series only has 3 or 4 episodes per ‘season’. If it’s a more dramatic show, I like 6-8 episodes (happy with 6, thrilled with 8). I would put shows like Vera, Shetland, and Van der Valk in that category. If it’s lighter drama with humorous bits, such as Midsomer Murders, Brokenwood Mysteries, and Professor T, then I like 8-10 episodes in a season. If it’s a cozy mystery, such as Shakespeare and Hathaway, Father Brown, and Death in Paradise, then I’ll be delighted with 10 or 12 (especially since they’re usually less than 1 hour long). Anything more than that I start to feel obligated to watch and lose my enjoyment.

The only ones that I do enjoy with longer seasons are half hour comedies, but even then I can easily get out of the habit of watching if something else distracts me. For instance, I’ve dropped many ‘must see tv’ shows that I totally enjoyed just because I went on vacation for a week. The Simpsons is one that comes to mind. We loved that show, but miss it for one week and it’s hard for me to get back into the habit of watching again. And I don’t miss it. During the recent election season I stopped watching the late night shows because of all the political humor. And I don’t miss them.

There’s just too much out there for my brain to absorb, and I find that walking away from a tv show is actually quite liberating.
