What was the episode where one of your favorite shows jumped the shark? I ask because I just watched The Office’s season 5 dance-off episode…

Back in Montreal, my mother, who has trouble walking, is climbing stairs against my sister’s advice.  The other day, sis caught her climbing down the stairs…carrying her walker!  As a result, my sister no longer feels comfortable leaving her alone at home in the event she takes a bad fall.  My mother, on the other hand, feels we’re being too negative by focusing on worst-case scenarios.  Hmmmmmm.  Guess I’ll be heading back for another stay before our Japan trip.

    Tell your mom we said be to be more careful! But I know very well that folks can be pretty independent and stubborn. I hope she stays safe (but maybe still with a bit of that independent streak!)

    Joe, as for your shark-jumping question…there have been quite a few shows that were ruined for me by such feats as introducing an alien into an otherwise down-to-earth show (for me it was Mork, not the shark-jumping, that ruined Happy Days for me), killing off a beloved character in a comedy show (All in the Family), and doing something that was just weird and/or embarrassing (the Elogium episode of ST Voyager…followed by just about every annoying thing that Janeway did in that show).

    I am fairly tolerant of most shark-jumping moments because most shows – even the best ones – have them, like Midsomer Murders wild west episode. Huh? Yeah, that one just didn’t fit in. But one show that never had that jump-the-shark moment, in my humble opinion, was Everybody Loves Raymond. The more I watch the old reruns, the more perfect that show proves to be.

    Mothers! My brother-in-law arrived at his mother’s house one day to discover the upright piano no longer upright. It turned out his 80 year old mother was trying to move it to the other side of the room and it tipped over. It was too heavy for her to get it upright again.

    She didn’t seem to comprehend how bad it would have been if it had fallen onto her!

    I scoff, but I will probably be just as stubborn about my limitations when I’m 80.

    It’s difficult giving up Independence as we age. If we are lucky enough to live to her age, we’ll all be facing these problems. I’m glad she feels well enough to be so spunky but it’s a bit scary.

    When is your trip to Japan?

    Good luck with your Mom!

    I haven’t gotten the OL episodes downloaded yet. My tech person (son) needs a reminder.

    Elderly parents can be VERY stubborn! I once banned my mom from going into the kitchen. She was in a wheelchair and it was too wide to get thru the opening of the kitchen. So, she would just park it at the doorway and get up and hang onto the countertops! Oh boy!

      @Ponytail – Oh boy – that sounds exactly like something my mom would do! After she came home from the hospital her knee still looked horrible, and it hurt her when she walked (but it wasn’t broken or infected, just very bruised because of her blood thinners). So we placed a long, wide bench alongside her bed to remind her to stay in bed during the night (she usually got up on her own to use the bathroom), and to prevent her from both falling out of bed and from getting out of bed. After the third day at home, she climbed over the bench, used the bathroom, and then couldn’t figure out how to get back into bed. Oh boy. I’m thinking of getting a hospital bed, but now I wonder if she will try to climb over the railing! She has very limited mobility and VERY poor balance, but when she wants to do something she becomes very determined to do it, even if it’s dangerous to do so.

      It sucks getting old.

        My mother has a hospital bed but it doesn’t stop her from getting up in the middle of the night and trying to go downstairs for some inexplicable reason.

    Joey, I got distracted. I meant to say something about your mom. Tell her to be good! My mom wasn’t good, and she tried to leave her room without our assistance. She uses a rollator walker which works fine on her carpet, but gets away from her on the vinyl plank flooring in the hallway just outside her door. She is not supposed to leave her room until someone can walk with her.

    Well, this day we had all taken naps, and she got up before we did. I heard a huge bang, ran to her room (I was napping nearby on the sofa), and found her sitting on the floor, her knee (which was replaced about 10 years ago) blowing up like a balloon. This was a few days before Thanksgiving (USA). She spent a week in the hospital, then a couple weeks at home going to doctors, then back in the hospital with a UTI AND blood infection (from the UTI and a blind cyst that broke), and now she’s in rehab until Friday for antibiotic treatments. The cyst probably developed from the fall, the UTI possibly from being in the hospital and not drinking enough fluids. All could have been avoided if she just stayed in her room until we came to help her get to the kitchen. (Mom is also showing signs of dementia, which tends to make her more self-willed and less cautious.)

    It’s hard for our older parents to accept that they just can’t do the things they’re used to doing. Their minds tell them that they can do all the things they did when they were young, it’s just that their bodies don’t cooperate.

        We just brought her home today, and she’s as loopy as can be. It takes a couple of days before she settles down mentally.
