First, we did pizza. Then, we did fried chicken sandwiches. Last night, we embarked on our very first smashburger crawl of Toronto!
Our first stop was a place called Happy Burger. For comparison purposes, we decided to go with two single cheeseburgers and a single order of fries that we split between the four of us. It was my first visit to Happy Burger and I thought it was pretty solid, although I found the waffle fries maybe a little too thick cut.
Our second stop was Matty’s Patty’s Burger Club. This place is one of my favorites. The buns sesame seed buns can’t be beat and the beef patties are always crispy and flavorful. Their McDonalds’s-style fries are equally crispy and perfectly salted.
Third stop was the ever popular Burger Drops where we sampled two slightly different cheeseburgers (that ultimately came down to the onions, raw and cooked). The spicy crinkle fries were a favorite.
Our fourth stop was Aloette Go, little brother to big sister restaurant Aloette that is, in turn, little sister to big brother Michelin-recognized All. The crispy over-sized cheese is a definite draw.
I was expecting we’d move on to Matt’s Burgerlab and the Slayer Burger Truck but two of our four participants needed to tap out. At a total of TWO CHEESEBURGERS! What is the world coming to when two grown men can’t eat three cheeseburgers?!
So, instead, we grabbed some dessert at Nani’s Gelato. I went with the excellent pistachio gelato sandwiched between two chocolate chip cookie halves.
Three out of four of us had the same ranking: #1 Matty’s Patty’s Burger Club, #2 Burger Drops, #3 Aloette Go, and #4 Happy Burger. The fourth had Burger Drops at #1 and Matty’s Patty’s Burger Club at #2 because he REALLY liked those spicy crinkle fries.
Overall, they were all very good, but my favorite remains Matty’s Patty’s. And, if you go, do the spicy-ketchup sauce!
So we’ve done pizza, fried chicken sandwiches, and smash burgers. I’m thinking we should do tacos next. Thoughts?

Tacos? In Toronto? Surely you mean San Antonio.
Yes, do tacos! Loving all the food porn!
When you say We, was that Akemi or did you get a friend to join you? Akemi is tiny and I can’t see her eating all that food. 🤔
On yesterday’s blog, I saw Wisting and enjoyed the show. Plus, I love seeing the Nordic location. We don’t have a lot of snow here (usually). Have you seen the shows set in Iceland? That location is gorgeous!
I’ll look up Umbre and Bloodhounds. Thanks for the reviews!
I’d vote that each burger be cut into 1/4 pieces. That’s enough to test taste and hopefully everyone can make it to the end. Tacos sound good. And that dessert looks awesome.
Hadn’t pegged Rob Cooper for being much of a burger man? Let me guess … It was lvon and Rob that tapped out early? I tried ta warns ya after what happened last time … But we all know your brain goes into stubbornness mule mode once you make up your mind. Tacos sound fun for the next crawl. They are bit lighter so the guys will likely be able to try more restaurants before tapping out. Those waffle fries from Happy’s are are actually lookin’ pretty good to me right now. Were they at least salty and slightly crispy with the extra thickness? Or too soft to do it justice?
Correct. Rob and Ivon tapped out early. Alex and I were ready to continue. Maybe next time instead of tacos we’ll do healthy salads.
I love burgers! But sadly yes 2 in one go is my absolute max. Really I’m just there for the entertaining company. And the spicy fries.
Ivon, is that you posing as a land shark? I was tempted once to sign in as Emily Latella. 😆
No, that’s Rob.
Lol 😆 maybe? Try a dumpling and pot sticker crawl. Chinese vs Japanese vs Germany vs North American versions. Most places serve 6-8 per plate. The first place you can try two different kinds. Every where else you order only one plate. This ensures both Robert and Ivon won’t feel bloated and will have room in their slightly more sensitive aging tummy’s to try 6 different places. You may want to call around to the places you line up though to make sure they have tables and chairs to sit down and are not strictly take n go.
That’s not a bad idea.
