The Serpent (2021) The twisting, real-life story of Charles Sobhraj, a murderer, thief and seductive master of disguise, who was a hidden darkness in the mid-70’s on Asia’s hippie trail.

My thoughts: The quick-cut hyperkinetic style just becomes too much.  It’s clear we have a Guy Ritchie fan here.

Barry (2018 – 2023) Season 1

A hit man from the Midwest moves to Los Angeles and gets caught up in the city’s theatre arts scene.

My thoughts: A clever, darkly humorous series that stands out amongst the 100+ shows I’ve watched so far for this Crime Binge.

Barry (2018 – 2023) Season 2

A hit man from the Midwest moves to Los Angeles and gets caught up in the city’s theatre arts scene.

My thoughts: The twists and turns keep coming, as does this show’s trademark dark humor.  Fantastic.

Barry (2018 – 2023) Season 3

Coming off the rails here! A hit man from the Midwest moves to Los Angeles and gets caught up in the city’s theatre arts scene.

My thoughts: Hmmmm.  While it doesn’t completely come off the rails, the sudden shift in the show’s tone makes this third season a marked let-down from the previous two.

Barry (2018 – 2023) Season 4

I felt like I was watching a completely different show with the same name. A hit man from the Midwest moves to Los Angeles and gets caught up in the city’s theatre arts scene.

My thoughts: Everything that made this show so wonderful in its first two seasons has been stripped away in favor of a humorless, utterly depressing storyline.  It’s hard to believe this is the same show.

  1. This blog post was like a rollercoaster! I was getting so excited to watch Barry and now I’m not sure. Should I just stop after two seasons?

Why does this happen? Do the writers run out of ideas? Do the writers have too many ideas and they want to experiment with the format? Too much interference from the studio?

  2. Even though it’s not normally my cuppa tea
    I did watch Barry.
Totally agree. First two seasons were fun to watch.
After that it went downhill and I eventually lost all interest.
Seems too many shows I initially enjoy watching are like that these days.

  3. Thanks @Gforce.
The good news is when I woke up this morning I noticed swelling went down a little
and there was no oozing from the eye while I slept last night.
    So that’s a hopeful sign.
Also, if I do have to make a bus trip to see specialists in MA some local fellow cancer patients there have now scored me a free couch to crash on close to the medical center
for couple days so I wont have to worry about lodging. Still coming up about a hundred short for round trip bus fare so I’m hoping the improvement steadily continues and I wont have to stress about trying to make the long trip.

      That is good news, Drea

  4. I felt the same way after the first couple of episodes of S3 Barry. I couldn’t put my finger on what was so different, but I actually set the series aside after that and never really got back to it. The first two seasons were darkly brilliant, but S3 just seemed just dark. Or something.

  5. My husband & I came to the exact same conclusion as you with the latter two seasons of Barry. Hell, we DNFed the third season because we could see where it was heading & had plenty of other shows to check out. It’s a real shame. No. Really. Shame on whomever changed the show’s tone!

  6. I saw “The Serpent”. It was a crazy story. The quick-cut hyperkinetic style just becomes too much. Thanks for putting the weird into words. I’d have to agree with you about the style.

I’ve only seen a few episodes of “Barry”. I’ll skip the later seasons. Thanks for the heads up!

I just finished season four of “Fargo”. Loved it!

  7. Oh and the Memphis area has 5-9 inches of snow. There are videos of people skiing in Memphis. Wish I had a set of skis and knew how. 🤔

The thing about the Southern U.S. is their salt budget is small. They only salt the Interstates/Bridges/overpasses, if that. I loaded down the back of my little truck with pavers (a trick my dad taught me), so if I need to get out, I can but most things are closed. Even the YMCA is closed, so no swimming until the snow melts off the main roads. Hopefully, that will be Wednesday.
