When we were kids, my sister and I dreaded our annual family car trips to Toronto. It was a roughly 350 miles trek. Six and half hours, of tedium, occasional nausea, and egg salad sandwiches with overly large chunks of raw white onion that my mom would prepare for the ride.

Whenever my sister and I would complain my father would admonish us by reminding us why we were going. “It’s your grandmother’s birthday. She turns 98 this year. This may be the last time you see her.”

And “It’s your grandmother’s birthday. She turns 99 this year. This could be her last one. ” And “Your grandmother turns 100 this year and this is probably the last birthday she’ll celebrate.”

My grandmother lived to 112. That was a lot of egg salad sandwiches.

Today’s Yes/No….

Happy Belated Birthday, Ponytail!

  1. My Georgia-peach mother liked Coca-Cola, but I don’t recall her using it in recipes. There was an occasional congealed salad; I’m thinking lime jello, canned crushed pineapple, and cottage cheese. (Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it.)

There’s an article on southernthing.com about ambrosia salad, made with marshmallows. Have had it; too sweet and mushy.

Mom’s was simply orange chunks tossed with shredded coconut. When I make ambrosia, I throw in dried cranberries or maraschino cherries, if I have them on hand.

Mother made carrot-raisin salad with just those two ingredients, and her Waldorf salad (apples, nuts, raisins, celery) contained little, if any, Miracle Whip salad dressing /spread.

  2. Thanks Joe! I love that story of going to see your grandma. That is many years of egg salad sandwiches with chunks of onion. And a stinky car! (“Okay, who cut the cheese….oh, nevermind…. it’s just lunchtime.”) Did you ever ask for a simple peanut butter and jelly sandwich? I would have.

  3. Me three on the disdain for cilantro.
Also definite no on coke salad.
I’ve never cared for Coke or Pepsi for that matter.

Finally beginning to feel a bit better but my eye is still swollen.
Doctor told me to give it a couple more weeks before we discuss other options.

  4. Cilantro: “The Devil’s Herb”

I’ve never heard of Coke Salad. It looks like one of those depression era recipes. I’d try this.

Holy life expectancy, Batman! That’s pretty fantastic.

Coke ‘salad’ combines the horrors of aspic with the age-old tradition of rampant diabetes in the south.

    Also, cilantro is the devil.
    I stand by my statement.

    😁

That’s the thing with families… you’ve got the duty to see your Grandparents! (Used to drive 100 miles each way) Cilantro (or coriander in the UK) – noooo it’s not the devil incarnate!
