We ushered in the New Year as is the tradition in our household – by being asleep when midnight rolls around.

Then, today, we celebrated New Year’s day in the Japanese way – with TWO types of ossechi compliments of Dr. Blackjack:

The menus…

The ossechi…

With special guest star…bottarga!

The desserts were Italian-style: pistachio cornetto, almond cornetto, and a sfogliatelle…

  1. Small pajama party with other senior-community residents, watching the city’s televised celebration as well as the neighborhood’s scofflaw fireworks.

  2. Resolution: To take advantage of the community’s offerings, like tomorrow’s group trip to see WICKED (the musical), to sell the house, and to put this apartment in some kind of order v

  3. Btw, folks, if you have not seen OPPENHEIMER…
    DO!

  4. My new years resolution? Ya mean,
aside from continuing to wake up each day??? …
Finding a way to convince Dr Blackjack to send me a one year supply of
pistachio cornetto, almond cornetto and sfogliatella!! xoxo

  5. I would have saved lots of room for dessert! New Year’s Eve I listened to all the yahoos setting off illegal fireworks, luckily not too close to my house. I plan to dedicate my energy to getting my house in tip-top showroom condition!

Hope your family in Japan is all okay.

  6. My NY resolution is to try to finish the things that were my ’23 resolutions. Maybe!

  7. We had neighbors over for New Year’s Eve dinner: homemade lasagna with seasoned hamburger & grilled sweet Italian sausage, a giant bowl of salad & an apple pie for dessert. Plus wine. They went home at 9:30pm because the husband’s an avid cyclist & loves to go for a sunrise ride every New Year’s Day.

My husband & I then enjoyed a Maryland-created craft cocktail: the Diamondback. And then to toast in the New Year, my husband had champagne & I had a mix of champagne & red wine. Then my husband went to bed & I watched a few episodes of SG1 & SGA while cuddling with our cat before heading to bed myself.

I don’t do NY’s resolutions any more, other than “I resolve to live to see the next year arrive.” It’s better for me to not make any specific resolutions, so as not to beat myself up if I don’t manage to complete any or all of them. Still, I plan to challenge myself this year to transition to completely added-sugar free, make time to exercise more, & finally get all of my sleep issues better understood, because my complete lack of a circadian rhythm without being fully blind bullish!t needs to stop. Even if it just means I finally get to making that appointment with a sleep specialist, then at least it’s a step in the right direction & a win in my eyes.

Don’t know if you’ve seen Neil Gaiman’s new year’s wish quote, so I’ll wrap up with it.
“May your coming year be filled with magic and dreams and good madness. I hope you read some fine books and kiss someone who thinks you’re wonderful. And don’t forget to make some art — write or draw or build or sing or live as only you can. And I hope, somewhere in the next year, you surprise yourself.” <3

      What’s in a Diamondback?
Have you tried melatonin for your sleep issues?

      1. The Diamondback consists of 2 parts rye whiskey, one part yellow chartreuse, & one part applejack. We couldn’t find the chartreuse, so we substituted amaro. It was delicious! Not that sweet, but not bitter either. It does pack a wallop for me, though. 😁

Oh, I take melatonin. And Benadryl. And a topical sleep patch with hops. And L-Theanine. And CBD with the occasional Delta-9 THC to really knock my ass out. This will hopefully change once I’m finally able to get in to see a sleep therapist that my new sleep neurologist recommended. It’s been a very stupidly long process getting to see a specialist, & then finding another one that doesn’t immediately write off all of my issues “because weight gain”. 🙄

  8. It’s 2024, not 23 (on your header). I’m going to have the same problem but thankfully, I don’t have to write the date very often.

Your New Year’s celebration looked fantastic!

Is it NY’s that Akemi does the massive housecleaning thing?

The book looks good. I’ll check it out and Thanks!

  9. Are your people in Japan okay?

Yes. Akemi’s family is in Osaka.
