Mom and Sharky

Sis and green beans

Akemi and bear-with-antlers sweater

Yesterday, we went shopping at the local C&T Chinese supermarket where Akemi was thrilled to pick up some natto and Andria was equally thrilled to pick up 6 jugs of corn oil (on special!) that my mother uses to cook.  Well, I should say “fry” because she fries EVERYTHING!  Looking forward to getting back to our “olive oil and roast”.

For lunch, we picked up some assorted items from the shop’s BBQ section: BBQ duck, BBQ pork, and wings.  And green beans.

My mother has been feeling under the weather for weeks and hasn’t had the strength to make her annual friendship cake.  So I ended up snacking on these marzipan fruit my sister got me for Christmas (along with two packs of butter rum lifesavers).  I used to love these as a kid.  Spoiler alert: Each piece of marzipan fruit tastes exactly the same.

After dinner, mom cooked up some chestnuts – only to have the lid fuse onto the pan.  Despite best efforts, it would not disengage so we ended up putting it out on the back patio until, ten minutes later, Akemi heard a POP.  Done!  My mother found them too hard to clean and gave up, but Akemi is a huge fan of tedious chores and spent hours carefully separating them out.  By the end, she was looking a little crazed.

Rain day today.  We may head out to Victor Rose, a dog-friendly coffee shop in the air.  Then, tonight, it’s dinner (our lone dinner out on this trip) at Montreal Plaza.  Expect plenty of food pics tomorrow!

My mother, while folding laundry, suddenly concerned: “Is this the type of underwear you wear now?”

She was holding up Akemi’s panties.

  1. Joe, I’m with you on the marzipan. Loved it as a kid, so my (older) sis gives me some every Christmas. This year, it’s a chocolate-covered disc instead of marzipan fruits.

LOVE Akemi’s bear sweater! Wonder if it comes in my size?

  2. Those green beans look awesome. I’m going to get me some fresh ones. I keep saying it, but it’s true… Sharky is soooo cute! I see he is staying right in the middle of all the fun. Great pictures! Your mom is too funny.
Joseph, you should make your mom’s Friendship Cake for her. Isn’t this the one she makes several of? You just make one big one for your mom and don’t worry about the little ones she gives away. Akemi could be your Sous Chef.

  3. I still enjoy butter rum lifesavers but haven’t seen them sold in any local store for some time now. At least not at any grocery check out stands or in the local convenience marts.
Haven’t been into a Walgreens in a while. Maybe they still sell ’em?

Cold and rain here again today, as well.
It also rained half the day Christmas Eve and all day and night on Christmas day.

Someone brought me a slice of Tiramisu cake from the supermarket bakery today.
I thought my taste buds would be more excited about it … but I only ended up taking a few bites and putting the rest away for later.

  4. @Ponytail Thanks. xo
Eye is still swollen and blood work hasn’t revealed what caused it. ???
Still mostly in bed taking it easy.

Was worried about ya when you went quiet Christmas Eve till yesterday.
Very glad you weren’t in Jail and are okay.

To catch ya up on latest pupper drama: I’m sure It’s not that Kona & Ralphie dislike Sharky or vice versa. – It’s that any dog significantly larger than Sharky freaks him out,
according to Joe. I figured he’d run away from Kona. Wasn’t sure if he’d take a liking to Ralphie? But I guess Ralphie isn’t gentle and mellow enough for him either.

  5. Sorry to hear your Mom hasn’t been feeling well. I hope she’ll be doing better soon.

I wish I was as huge a fan of tedious chores as Akemi, since I am a complete non-fan and to me all chores are tedious.

Ha! You should have told your mom that those WERE your underwear, but it was strictly a comfort thing.

  6. Red Sonja #6 – cover art by Bjorn Barends is my favorite from yesterday.

Yes, my mom fries or boils everything. I blew her mind away once when I showed her how to roast vegetables. She went back to her go to method and still boils or fries them, though.

The chestnuts were Akemi’s jigsaw puzzle. We did one of those this holiday, too.

I hope your mom feels better soon!
