Had a pitch this week for that cozy mystery series.  The pitch is a lot of fun and everyone clearly enjoyed themselves – for what that’s worth.  This series is a no-brainer so far as I’m concerned: a quirky and colorful cast, a compelling mystery, twists, turns, shocks, surprises, the ubiquitous red herring, and LOTS of humor.  And it wouldn’t be all that expensive to produce.  So now, we wait…

Didn’t hear back on my pitch for series adaptation of the 1995 cult fantasy thriller The Prophecy.  It’s too bad because the upteched version would have been a lot of fun.  Alas, such is the business.  So many missed opportunities.

Meanwhile, waiting to hear back on a few more promising projects.  In the meantime…

I continue my torrid reading pace.  I’m nearing 300 2025 Crime Reads and will be updating my list accordingly.  Wonder if I can hit 400 by year’s end?  That would make it my best reading year to date.  So far, I’ve recommended about 30 titles – so 1 in 10.  I am, admittedly, a difficult read.

Will also be wrapping up by Horrorfest at month’s end.  I’ve been doing a 2025 horror movie a day for all of October and was considering continuing into November, but this has simply NOT been a good year for horror.   I think I’ve genuinely really enjoyed 4 of the 25 movies I’ve watched to date.  Let’s see if I can make it 5 before Halloween.

For November, I may switch back to an old favorite and complete my Columbo rewatch with the last 16 episodes.  What do you think?

Back in Montreal, my mother made the move from the rehab center to a proper nursing home.  My sister gave me a FaceTime tour yesterday and it seems very nice – clean, spacious, amenities, and activities for the residents.  And, best of all, dogs are permitted to visit.  I predict Sharky is going to be VERY popular there.

Hope everyone is enjoying the weekend.   Let me know what’s new and exciting on your ends!

  1. Hi, thanks for the updates! It’s so good to read you! Happy to hear the good news about your Mother. 👏👏👏 Sharky’s having a fandom. Excellent idea with Colombo.

  2. I hope something comes of that mystery pitch. I’m starting to wonder if it’s mostly the ideas that DON’T make sense that are the most likely to be green lit.

Great to hear that your Mom made it into a proper nursing home. That sounds like a great spot and hopefully she’ll settle in quickly there!

  3. I’m glad your Mom graduated from the rehab center and sounds like Sharkey will be getting lots of scratches and treats when he visits 🙂 My suitcase is out and I’m packing for a upcoming cruise which I’m excited about, my cat isn’t too thrilled with the suitcase appearance. I’m still playing with the Sora app too,

    1. Jim, is the cat expecting to come with you … ( fish! ) or a trip to the vets … or just you are leaving them?

      1. Joe, Thank you so much!

Neil, My cat is never a fan of seeing the suitcase appear, he’ll be in good hands at home while I’m away 🙂

  4. Joe, IF you don’t hear back from a pitch does than mean NO. Or do they send a thanks – but no thanks message?

    1. Most of the time you’ll hear back with a thanks but not thanks, but there are times when you don’t hear back at all – which is their way of letting you know thanks but no thanks without having to put in the actual effort to reach out and say thanks but no thanks.

  5. Thanks for your Mum’s update xxx I hope she’ll get settled in OK xxx

  6. I can’t believe you have read that many books! Truely impressive! I remember in the past you reading 250. That was incredible enough, but 300 is spectacular.

I have found your Horrorfest rather scary. I’m going to have to watch some of those movies. I love Horror!

    Yes on Columbo.

Hope your mom enjoys the Nursing Home. She is so friendly, she should be fine. And Sharky will have a blast too!
