Happy Sharky Sunday! I hope he’s with you in Montreal.
On the subject of your mom’s house, I think the only alternative to construction or a relocation is a Bedside Commode Chair. They have to be emptied but they are effective.
My mom used one before she went into the hospital. We got the plumber to install a taller toilet with chair rails before she was released from rehab, so she doesn’t need the chair now.

Her bedroom is upstairs as well.
