Took my buddy Ivon out for dinner at the newly opened Ristorante Sociale, partly because it was his birthday but mostly because I had a hankering for pasta.
We shared three plates….

And one more for good luck!

All four pasta were excellent but the consensus favorite was the Rigatoni.
For dessert, we split a tiramisu and a sticky toffee pudding. He preferred the former, I the latter.
After our meal, they came by with an Amaro cart. We were too full to imbibe (but, in retrospect, I guess that’s the point of the digestif), but it inspired me to pick up these two bottles today…
Any fans of amaro out there? What are your favorites?
Speaking of favorites, Akemi picked up these for me the other day…
The Truff is a surprising favorite. The other two are alt srirachas in the spirit of Huy Tung that has apparently become scarce since the manufacturer had a falling out with the pepper provider. They have gone their separate ways and are putting out their own versions of the sauce but, from what I hear, nothing beats the original – that no longer exists.

Happy Birthday Ivon B! Hope it was an enjoyably relaxing day.
Kinda surprised you didn’t decide to try their hazelnut gelato, Joe.
Seems you haven’t had any hazelnut desert treats in awhile?
Albeit, that whole desert menu looks really good to me right now.
Do they allow sampling?
“I’ll have one bite of everything, please!” xo
OMG! I thought you were speaking a foreign language in this blog. I needed a dictionary to figure out what half the words meant:
Risotto Milanese
Gnocchi Pomodoro
Mascarpone e Tartufo
Rigatoni al Ragu
tiramisu
Amaro cart
imbibe
digestif
alt srirachas
you “share 3 plates” but show 4
I was so confused. Was that a mix of Italian and Japanese? I’m going to learn Spanish and start torturing you. Maybe German…
HAPPY BIRTHDAY IVON!!
“ nothing beats the original – that no longer exists.”
A phrase that seems to apply to almost everything nowadays. Maybe I’m just getting old.
Happy Birthday Ivon!
I’ve never had Amaro. What’s it like?
Bittersweet. Flavor profile similar to Campari or Aperol.
Thanks for the dinner, Joe! It was fantastic. I’m still full.
