Evidently I still haven’t quite shaken off my jet lag. We went to bed at 9:00 p.m. last night. I woke up early, believing it was around 6:00 a.m. It was actually 2:50 a.m. Went back to sleep and woke up again closer to 8:00 a.m. We packed up Sharky and headed to Victor Rose, a dog-friendly coffee shop in Pointe-Claire Village.
Sharky sniffing out Akemi’s London Fog latte.
Despite feeling under the weather, mom made taralli.
We tried out a new dumpling place for lunch today…
Over half the menu wasn’t available including the fried dumplings and the desserts, so we went with the peanut butter dumplings, siu long bao, and lamb with coriander. We ordered soups – that were served cold. My sister sent hers back and asked for it hot and it was returned, moments later, still cold. The couple beside us did the same thing with the woman advising the waitress to: “Put it in the microwave for a minute.” Her soup was also returned – cold. Guess we’ll be scratching this place off our list.
Afterwards, we went shopping and I picked up this interesting looking jar of honey with nuts. Akemi and I had it with some kefir and a little almond butter. Delicious!
My mother has prepared for the coming apocalypse.
So how are you all celebrating the holidays?

Your mom’s 12 jars of Taster’s Choice is probably the best thing I will see today! 😂 My parents always had 1 half-used, half-desiccated jar in their cupboard…
Our celebrations are a little more active this year, due to moving to “independent living”. I missed the ugly sweater contest but have worn my Christmas shirts and accessories this week.
Also enjoyed seeing other residents dressed for the season. In South Texas, that often means a graphic t-shirt instead of heavy sweaters.
Let’s see…there was a holiday sing-along last Saturday and a monthly birthday dinner three days ago. We plan to celebrate Christmas with my sister, now only ten minutes away.
For those on FB: I decorated a wreath instead of a tree this year.

Sounds like a full Christmas schedule for you, Gilder.
PS: I’m spending my birthday today just as I like: reading my current novel, enjoying Facebook birthday greetings, maybe seeing a movie later.
Happy Birthday, Gilder!
Thanks, Joe!
Happy birthday Gilder. Hope it was relaxing. xo
Thank you!
Sorry to hear you are still suffering jet lag. Hopefully it’ll subside in a couple more days.
Despite feeling under the weather, your mom looks wonderful as always. I wish I had her energy and stamina.
For the last week or so, while you and Akemi were in Tokyo, I’ve been battling new health issues and have mostly been in bed. Unfortunately I now also have a new infection and am having an allergic reaction to something (unknown as of yet) that has caused a huge, boil or cyst-like but not quite, swelling directly under my right eye so doctors have ordered me to remain at rest through the holidays. All the pics from Japan and now of Sharky & your mom have been a truly delightful pick me up.
Thanks so much for that.
Looking forward to whatever your mom decides to cook up over the holidays, pics of all the fur babies, and any other Christmas delights and mischief you decide to share.
Peace, joy, and much love to all
this holiday season
and always. xo
Hey Drea,
Sorry to hear about this latest health set-back. Wishing you a speedy recovery.
Maybe you pulled an “Arnold Rimmer” and the soup was supposed to be cold?
The taralli look great. I guess they’re like Italian pretzels? I might have to try making some!
I hope your mom starts feeling better soon. I love the video of her making taralli. What part of Italy is she from and has she ever gone back for a visit?
We went to visit my mom Friday and came back that night. I was hoping this would be easier on my mom. My brother picked up some local BBQ so she wouldn’t have to cook. Turns out, she’s decided to make two huge meals anyway (Christmas Eve & Christmas day). We’re trying to talk her out of that plan but she’s a very stubborn lady.
Anyhoo, our Christmas will be low key. I’ll make our turkey dinner today and tomorrow our aim is to relax. The boys will play computer games and I’ll finish my season of Fargo.
How’s the weather in Montreal? Is your mom preparing for a ginormous Christmas meal or preparing for a snow storm?
Sorry about the dumpling place. Those dumplings look well made. I wonder if the place is short staffed? Around here, businesses are having a difficult time finding reliable employees. My old boss was complaining about that very thing before covid hit and it seems worse now. Well, I’m sure your Sis will find a great spot for you next time. 🍀
Merry Christmas Everyone! ❄️🎄🎅🏼🤶🏼
Hey Tammy,
Your mom (and her insistence on meal-making) very much sounds like my mom. She’s from the south part of Italy, by the way. Bari/Altamura region.
The weather in Montreal is not bad. Cold but not too cold. And, surprisingly, not snowing. We’ll see how long that lasts.
As for the dumpling place, they opened a week earlier and clearly should have maybe waited another.
Merry Christmas.
For us it’s not so much a matter of food. We have some kind of a movie routine where we watch the three first Harry Potter, HomeAlone, The Grinch and HogFather.
Every year, it’s the same routine.
I’m French and my wife is Russian, therefore we celebrate Christmas on the 24-25th of December and on the 31st.
Gespatcho soup perhaps Joe? I could hear the chefs laughing at me as asked them to bring it back piping hot! {Line Noise beat me to it! Courtesy of Red Dwarf! Series 1, ep 6, Me2 }
HOARDERS UNITE!
I feel this time of year can be tiring even without jetlag, so I hope you will feel better. My daughter and her family are staying with us through Christmas. I am hosting a Christmas Eve gathering for family and then cooking for 8-10 people on Christmas Day. It will be busy and noisy, but it’s the kind, because we spend it with family and especially the grandchildren. Merry Christmas to all.
