Comrade Detective (2017)

Detectives Gregor Anghel and Joseph Baciu investigate the murder of fellow officer Nikita Ionescu and, in the process, unravel a subversive plot to destroy their country that is fueled by the greatest enemy: Capitalism.

My thoughts: Like a one-gag sketch stretched out over hours.

DNF

Shetland (2013 – ) Season 1

A local police team investigate crimes within the close knit island community of Shetland.

My thoughts: Very well done so far as rustic rural mysteries go, but I guess I ‘m just not a fan of rustic rural mysteries.

The Thaw (2022 – ) Season 1

The body of a young woman is discovered in the icy river. The investigation is led by Zawieja for whom solving the case will be a fight for herself.

My thoughts: Dumb luck trumps incompetent police work in this Silence of the Lambs clone.

3/5

Sherwood (2022 – ) Season 1

Two shocking and unexpected murders shatter an already fractured community leading to one of the largest manhunts in British history.

My thoughts: Coincidences and contrivances mar the whole.

3/5

Unforgotten (2015- ) Season 5

Human remains are discovered in a newly renovated period property in West London. But is this a murder dating back to the 1930s or has the body been disposed of in more recent times?

My thoughts: Still a plotted show, but something is definitely missing this season…

  1. Thanks for the critiques!

Is Manhunt (S1) on your list? I liked it. I haven’t watched S2 yet.

I like COLLEEN J. O’SHAUGHNESSY’s idea about preparing Sharky by visits to the vet tech sitter. It can’t hurt for short periods of time.

Well, you have to go visit Akemi’s family. I’m sure you’ll have a great time and I can’t wait for the food porn. I know you’ll think of Shaky the whole time but it’s only 2 weeks. 😬

Do you follow @PickliciousF on X? It’s an account Ricky Gervais set up for his cat. Ricky travels a lot and Pickles refers to the house sitters as “Mr. & Mrs. Idiot”. It makes me smile. Sometimes, it’s the little things….

    1. That’s odd. Already watched it but missed doing a review. Didn’t love it.

  2. In “Unforgotten”, there is definitely something missing, but it still deserves the solid 4/5 you gave it and perhaps a bit more from me. I still found this series interesting and engaging, although I get your point. I tried not to dwell on the obvious lack and pour myself into the mystery. Overall, I think that this series was a more pleasant surprise than I had anticipated at the start. It will be interesting to see if it gets a sixth season. Masterpiece tends toward long running shows, so that is definitely in its favor.

  3. PS. I second Colleens idea for Sharky. It really couldn’t hurt to let him become acquainted and comfortable with the sitter before leaving him for two weeks. You could bring him over to meet them and after a few minutes take off to go get grab a Mocha or a quick bite somewhere for 30 minutes. Then, a couple days before your trip you could drop him off for a full hour to go do some local Christmas gift shopping before returning.
