Well, the Writers Guild of America is officially on strike and I fear it may be a long one given the desperate straits many writers are facing – and the nice fat salaries and bonuses execs will be loathe to pare down. So, switching off my paid development work in favor of personal projects: that comedy procedural pilot, the comic book scripts, and putting wrangling the financing for my horror movie. With regard to the latter, I’ve someone working on a preliminary budget, but the real challenge will be the business plan. Having worked in television the entirety of my career, the indie film scene is somewhat alien to me, so I’ve reached out to a few veterans for guidance.
Speaking of veterans, former Stargate and Dark Matter director Will “Pineapple” Waring in town to work on a show. We shared a couple of pizzas and more than a few desserts at Beast Pizza the other night.
Hopefully we’ll be able to squeeze in at least one more dinner when I get back from Montreal.
Ah, yes. I’m off to Montreal for ten days. According to her rheumatologist, my mother has sciatica and should limit her movements. And since my sis is heading out of town for a few weeks, looks like I’ll be back in my hometown taking care of mom until the 16th.
Putting together a list of some of my favorite things I’ll need to schlep with me: cheeses, avocado, supplements, chocolate, May have to pick up my kefir and full fat yogurt when I get into town.

Great blog, love hearing about your food exploits. Thankyou
Having taken care of my parents pre-pandemic, I can say family is the right choice for care. I saw my parents neglected in hospitals and rehab facilities, treatments and basic care withheld–a few times to cruel levels–just out of not getting around to it. Once someone isn’t mobile enough to cause any trouble, the quality of institutional care plummets. I’ve heard it’s even worse after the pandemic as some of the people who cared most burned out.
There are many kinds of home health aides. I don’t know what it’s like in Canada, but we’ve used Medicare-covered home bath aides the most. Having a chore that never takes less than an hour of physical labor and intense fall prevention taken care of is a load off. I reckon with the vaccine mandates still in place, the private pay options in Canada are pretty over-qualified right now.
Thanks, DP. About to hire bath aide for a loved one. Good to hear your experience.
Oh my goodness, it’s the handsome Will Waring! He looks fabulous!! He has not aged at all over the past few years. Maybe just a little… like fine wine… Does he still “Insert Here” a pineapple in what he directs now or was that just for the Stargate and Dark Matter family?
Hope your mom feels better fast. Sciatica is so painful. If you have not already, while you are there get her an electric recliner that will help her get up and sit down in the chair. I got my dad one from Sam’s Club. They delivered. He loved it and it came in real handy in his later years. Have a good, CALM trip Joe. You may have to get your own Charlie Brown bed ready when you get there. ): Oh, I guess you’ll be doing the cooking while there? Looking forward to the blog updates!
My best to Mrs. Mallozzi. I’ve had sciatica for at least 20 years. Hope her doctors can track down the cause and provide some relief.
Are you a WGA member, Joe? In my mind you’re Canadian but I suppose if you’re working for US production companies that are signatories then you’d have to be.
I’ve been listening to the Script Notes podcast where they’ve been talking about the impending strike for several months. I hope it’s resolved soon and the writers get their fair share. The industry has changed so much in the last five years and the streamers wield way too much power!
I remember the last strike in 2007 when everything shut down. Some shows never came back after that. But if it wasn’t for the strike we would never have got Dr Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog so there’s a silver lining to everything I suppose!

The pizzas look amazing! Maybe I’ll have to fire up the wood oven this weekend and cook myself some pizza.
Sorry to hear about your mom, hope she is feeling better soon.
Great to see Will W around again!
I was watching a commentary earlier talking about the absolutely preposterous salaries that network/streaming executives are drawing, while some writers are literally having to go on assistance. Crazy.
I hope you have a safe trip! I’m sure she’ll be happy that you’re there.
If you get bored, check out those episodes of Love, Death & Robots.
prenez soin de votre maman!
Having taken care of my parents until they died, back in 2012, and I have no regrets. I loved all the time my family had with them. If I have one regret, it’s not getting my dads Navy Sea Stories recorded. Prayers for your mum.
Thanks, Michelle.
