This train ride back to Toronto is so different, it’s almost surreal.  The car is modern, the seats are comfortable, and it has internet.  I’ve been offered snacks, drinks and a choice of three meals (!).  On the other hand, the guy seated in front of me is laughing away like a serial killer in a 70’s horror movie and I’m hoping he’s actually watching something but can’t quite get a glimpse of what he’s up to.  I fear peaking up over the seat and catching him gazing at his own gleeful reflection.

One of the tastiest things I had while in Montreal was the homemade limoncello c/o my sister’s friend.  It’s a process that involves peeling the rinds of fresh lemons and then steeping them in alcohol for 40 days before straining and mixing with cream, milk, and sugar.  Delicious.  Recipe available upon request!

Speaking of delicious…

Where can I get these?

Update: The guy in front of me isn’t watching anything!  BUT he IS earring earphones, presumably listening to something funny(?).  I sure hope so!

  1. He’s a Psycho Killer
    Qu’est-ce que c’est
    Fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-fa-far better
Run, run, run, run, run, run, run away oh, oh, oh

  2. Akemi looks so happy! I’ll bet her joy is over more than just the taralli.

Parting really is such sweet sorrow, but it’s good to be home with your girls. I’m glad the return trip was better.

  3. I used to listen to a pretty funny weekly podcast while riding the commuter bus back before retiring. There were times I couldn’t help but laugh, but always tried to stifle it. Then again, there was the lady that used to occasionally take the bus that carried on full conversations with someone else in her head, even leaving pauses for the other “person” to speak. It really only made me a bit nervous though when the conversations turned a little dark.

  4. I’ve never heard of taralli before. They look similar to pretzels. Can you share your mum’s recipe? Or is it a family secret?

    Safe journey home!

  6. Glad your train ride back was better and uneventful. Happy that crazy guy kept himself under control, mostly. Akemi looks happy again. That was sweet of your mom to make that for Akemi.

  7. Catching up … you look great, everyone looks great, the food looks yum, the dogs are adorable, and I guess the train ride averaged out.

My friends in SF make limoncello, but not the cream version. Limoncello of Doom. Delicious Doom.

  8. Wonderful about the return train trip! I’m so happy that you got to visit your family, too. Too bad that Akemi couldn’t go with you but Suji was taken care of that way.

So, taralli is crunchy? Good to know!

Yes, on the limoncello recipe, please! I make a basic version for recipes (vodka with lemon/lime soaked). It’s good with lime, too. I know a good limoncello cookie recipe, if anyone is interested. https://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/trisha-yearwood/glazed-limoncello-cookies-3592185

    Oh and Akemi looks beautiful!

As for here, the heat wave has broken and I’m going to work outside today. I needed a jacket this morning. (Yay)

  9. See, it’s always the train name that matters like the Maple Leaf Flyer versus the Toronto Box Car Rumbler; the local train East here is either a grubby uncomfortable tin box that stops in every single town it passes and has a cafe that’s always out of everything or the fancy Capitol Limited, a sprawling wonderland with full dining service, observation decks, comfly sleeper cars.

  10. ‘the guy seated in front of me is laughing away’

Probably watching the Android and the rest of the crew going to the potluck in “Isn’t That a Paradox?” !!
