Guys, please. THIS –
is, quite frankly, nothing short of mind-boggling. You mean to tell me that 82% of you would eat an apple pie without ice cream? Some (no doubt online trolls) even went so far as to suggest they would actually top it with cheddar cheese instead!
Today, I was at the production offices for two important meetings –
MEETING THE FIRST – Casting!
We got together and reviewed all of our first round selects, narrowing down our choices for the call-backs. We’ll do one final review of all seven roles tomorrow after which I’ll send our casting agent our choices – along with a suggestion that we get on the phone with each candidate to let them know what worked for us the first time, what didn’t, and what we’re looking for in the second round.
MEETING THE SECOND – Schedule!
Hmmmm. We would appear to be a couple of days long which will require us to make a few trims – and maybe the odd deep cut. Our days are already pretty chock o’ block so we need to find opportunities to help make them more manageable. That can involve anything from reducing the number of characters in a scene (the more characters, the more time is spent getting coverage) to losing scenes outright (I know, I know. It’s all gold and we wouldn’t have plotted and written them if they weren’t, but you’ve got to make the tough decisions – and also give fans fun extras like “deleted scenes” that never made it to camera).
MEETING THE THIRD – The set walk-thru!
Construction has begun and already the structures are taking shape. We’ve got five weeks to build, paint, finish, and dress before we start principal photography March…what was it? 25th? Of course once the sets are up, it’ll be smoooooooth sailing!
Meanwhile, delivered…
The overview and general four issue breakdown for the opening arc of my proposed comic book series. Epic far-future, ship-based SF with plenty of action, adventure, exploration, a colorful crew of characters and an underlying sense of humor.
The revised outline for my (formerly titled) Untitled Awesome Project. It’s New and Improved with 50% more op and 100% more heist!
The revised pitch for that other series with a reworked pilot breakdown that included the addition of flamethrowers, collapsing walls, gross mismanagement of temporal stasis fields, and the consumption of a shockingly underripe banana.
I look forward to the feedback!
Being a fan of pies, I have to agree that pie alone is fine, though often improved by ice cream. Depending on the pie type of course. My father was a big fan of apple pie with cheddar cheese which I will admit I could not fathom.
Sounds like things are rolling along on many fronts!
Good busy day today it seems.
Ok, about the pie question though. You didn’t specify dessert pies … I mean, what about savoury pies? LOL. 😁
I’ve been watching the Expanse. The first time I watched it, the pilot episode lost me at the exposition for the belter physique. Coming back at it after a few of the books the series is based on, the same exposition was a noble attempt to honor the concepts in the books within the limits imposed by casting.
It’s all about making do. I could tie it to ice cream-less pie if need be.
Sounds exciting, I’m looking forward to seeing the new projects.
Now make sure you add a scene of the characters sitting in the mess eating apple pie and ice-cream.
( I’m imagining Anthony Lemke eating it and the android trying to take it off him for a taste test )
I like to top some of my pies with whip cream. Ice cream and pie is like having 2 desserts. I’m usually too full from dinner for that.
I understand you can’t show us any of the set building and give away the big project. I know you will whenever you are allowed. Can’t wait to see it and the other behind-the-scenes pictures.
Joe, we agree on most things but here I must put my foot down. The combination of hot and cold in one mouthful is just wrong! I can sort of cope with a splash of cream because it quickly warms up and cools the pie. But the best accompaniment to a hot, sweet pie is custard!
Yes I can and do eat pie without ice cream but it’s always better with it. I’m glad to hear that things are progressing, and yes, March 25th is just around the corner. Time flies!
Speaking of boggled minds… You mean to tell me you’d pass up a slice of warm, homemade apple pie just because there was no ice cream handy? While I agree it would be disappointing there’s just no way it would be a deal-breaker for me. It’s pie – never pass it up. Ever. (BTW, my mother used to cook her apple pie with a thin layer of sharp cheddar just beneath the top crust. With a nice vanilla-bean ice cream the flavor of vanilla, apple, cinnamon, along with the savory crust & cheese made it about the best thing I ever ate.)
With more cancellations of shows I love, hearing about casting and set walk-thrus. I’m salivating at the chance to fall in love with another science fiction (didn’t want to shorten that phrase, sounds too much like a certain network) series. I hope it gets a long and successful run; and barring that at least the chance to conclude the story.
Hoping we get some Schrodinger’s Awesome Project in a real way soon, but I’m sure you’re hoping much more than we are, if that’s even possible. Needs a title, and a premiere date. Yeah, that’d make it much better.
That pitch is intriguing and sounds wacky as hell. You had me at banana!
Glad to see so much positive progress in your projects, but I have to say; one person’s under-ripe banana could be ripe in another land. Filipinos for the most part (meaning my son’s mom) consider Western (US & Canada) banana consumption to be of the overripe variety. “There will be no wine before it’s time.” – Orson Welles (DOESN’T APPLY HERE).
Can pie be eaten without ice cream? Yes. Should it be eaten without ice cream? No. Cheese on pie? No thank you.
I think you need to try the poll again with custard; custard and/or ice cream; neither as options.
Firstly Apple Pie should only ever be eaten with either Ice Cream or Custard, Secondly its great to hear that things are moving on at a pace, I do hope that we get to see some of the Dark Matter cast working with you again, I suppose its a bit unrealistic to get the whole cast back in 🙂
Cant wait to see what genius you produce this time
As for pie’s…any kind, any time, with or without ice cream…YUMMMMM. I also love ice cream with cakes.
My sister-in-law is a Wisconsin native. She will not touch apple pie without a large chunk of sharp cheddar cheese melted over the top.
After reading Tom’s post I’m hungry for pie with cheddar cheese under the crust. With ice cream, of course. 🙂
Pie without ice cream? Yes. Pie without whipped cream? Not if I can help it.
Casting call – chanting David Blue. David Blue.
So many cool news!
Building sets! How exciting! Can’t wait to see the first pics!
Considering icecreamless pies, well, I’d rather have no ice cream than a bad one on my pie. RESPECT THE PIE.
“Can you eat pie without ice cream?”
Well, it depends on the pie.
For fruit pies (apple, berry, etc.) no, you can’t.
But, for cream pies (chocolate, banana, etc.) sure, no problem.
A bit late here but just wanted to say how exciting these projects are sounding. Can’t wait to hear and see more!
Thanks for taking the time to share with us! 😁
Exciting stuff; a month to build sets? It took me that long to choose a new pillow (which promptly went flat). It’s amazing to see how far the project has come from that first chat at that writer-producer meet up. My brains are fried from knee dip snow drifts, power outtages, grating speakerphone conference calls from other office (how hard is it to use headphones?). Since I can’t enjoy your projects just yet I’ll make do with Orville and Discovery tonight.
Pie is better with custard, save the cheese for a dark, rich fruit cake.yum.
I’m not a fan of pies. Especially fruit pies. I don’t like my fruit cooked. Jeff, on the other hand, loves ONLY APPLE pie. And no ice cream with it. I may like cream pies (like chocolate cream pies, coconut cream pies, etc). It depends on my mood though. When I get a craving once or twice a year, I get those single/dual serving ones and boom, craving over. Let me correct–I don’t know what pecan pie falls under but I have eaten a slice or two of that every few years.
