I woke up this morning to discover a waiting email in my inbox informing me that the application I had sent in to the government of Canada and had been returned not once, not twice, but three times prior to my re-re-resending it out in late July as apparently lost, meaning I would have to re-re-re-refile the application on more time.  So, I spent the greater part of the day filling out paperwork, getting the proper photos taken, and sending the application out yet again.  What is it they say when it comes to dealing with our government’s finest?  Fifth time’s the charm?

Also, to commemorate my special day, I am finishing up the final treatments for my frozen shoulder.  I’m pleased to report it has thawed out considerably.  But lest you think I’m going to miss the rehab center I’ve been visiting for the last couple of months – rejoice!  I am apparently suffering from either shin splints or a stress fracture to my right leg.

October 16, 2018: Non-stop Birthday Festivities!

Gifts from my gal!  Chocolates, chamomile tea to help rest these weary bones, two re-usable straws (one glass – too large, and one metal – too small), and a couple of massage coupons (I already sold on craigslist!).

I wanted fried chicken for lunch so of course we had to settle for pizza.  Then, we swung by Soma Chocolates and stocked up on the His (pistachio) and Hers (Hazelnut) spreads.  And assorted other goodies.

Later, we visited Dogs & Coffee, a dog-friendly cafe in downtown Toronto where I got a mocha while Suji went crazy for (while Lulu roundly ignored) a cup of frothy steamed milk.

October 16, 2018: Non-stop Birthday Festivities!

Between working on the second act of this pilot, I fielded birthday messages from friends, family, and former co-workers.

Tonight, we’re off for sushi!  And later tonight, it’s more writing!  And later later tonight, it youtube food videos and fantasy football waiver picks.  Good times, good times!

  1. Happy Birthday Joe! May your day be filled with delectable food and grand company.

  2. Happiest of birthdays!! And again I’m late getting my sis her present and card in the mail. The British Baking Show has failed to dispel the lingering Hill House heebie jeebies spoiling my bedtime. Worse, trying not to think about Hill House ghosties reminded me of the horrifying monsters in It Follows. I’m swearing off all scary TV until Oct 24 when Sabrina drops.

  3. Wishing you a great Birthday, Joe. Hope the rest of your day goes as you want it.

Sorry to hear you’re all creaky – hope the dodgy ankles aren’t the result of your leap across that massive river when on Dark Matter location.
Take care. These things catch up with you when you get old… er.

  4. Happy birthday mate. Don’t worry about the frozen shoulder,it happens to young people too!
    Suggest plenty of good chocolate!

  5. Happy birthday. Enjoy the treats! Good luck with the government. Ah, paperwork. So. Much. Fun.

Yesterday was MyLarry’s birthday, he would have been 59. My friends took me for a burger and then a soak at Crystal Hot Springs. Of course, everywhere we go is imbued with memories, but that’s okay with good company.

  6. Glad your birthday is going well. Did you really sell your massage tickets?? I think you would have liked that, and needed that. Oh well, there is always the chocolate. Enjoy the rest of the day and try to stretch your birthday out more during the rest of the week.

  7. Again, happy birthday. You guys know why I’ve been absent so I won’t go into all the details. I didn’t know you were suffering from a frozen shoulder. That hurts a LOT. And now a possible stress fracture? Not exactly the birthday gifts you should have to be dealing with especially on your birthday. The hazelnut/chocolate spread sounds like Nutella. Probably tastes a lot better, though, right? I’ll try to catch up. I think I have to go back through all September up to now.

  8. @maggiemayday (I pressed reply but it didn’t seem to work, so I’ll have to do it this way). I just wanted to send you a great big hug. I can’t imagine what you are going through.

  9. I already sent my birthday wishes, but here goes again! Happy birthday!

So sorry to hear about your government experience. When I worked there, I always tried to do everything right the first time. I think I succeeded, mostly. I hope. 🙂

SOMA chocolates? You know how I feel about those, LOL! Now you have me fantasizing about them. Again. I’m going to have to get back up there this winter!

  10. Happy Birthday! Personally, pizza trumps fried chicken and chocolate trumps everything so it sounds like a perfect day!

  11. Happy Birthday again, Joe! I hope the chocolates help you forget the frozen shoulder for a while. (The massage might have been good for that. Or at least a good hot compress when you turn in.) Glad you get to spend the birthday week (and day) with Akemi, the pups, good food, and good friends. Enjoy! 🙂

  12. Happy Birthday, Joe! It looks like your celebration is off to a good start. And I’m looking forward to the new show/s you’re working on.

  13. It looks like you had, and may still be having, a wonderful birthday. I’d tell you to enjoy it, but it’s clear you already are.

I hate to tell you this, but the random aches, pains, things not working, etc. only seem to get worse each year. Sometimes it feels like I’m at the doctors’ offices (yes, multiple, by many times) more than I’m at work.

One last thing – Have you decided if you’re going to dive into a TV show or not? (This feels like a mad question to ask someone who makes TV, but all the best people are.)

  14. A slightly belated happy birthday to you, youngster Joe !! Sounds like it was a good day

  15. Happy Belated Birthday! It’s hell getting older and as we get older birthdays aren’t what they used to be…say like when we were 10. Have a great rest of the week! I say pull the birthday card everyday for the rest of the week and enjoy!!

  16. Happy Happy Birthday to you !! Don’t forget to celebrate more than just one day.. a week is nice, enjoy and thanks for sharing it with us.

  17. Happy Birthday! (Again)

I made pistachio butter once, and it was fantastic. All you need is a big bag of pistachios, a food processor and a little canola oil.

  18. Except for the red tape, it sounds like a good birthday! I hope the sushi was excellent. Do you get a birthday month like Akemi! 🙂

Do you think should work with a trainer to avoid those injuries?

I miss my twenties for health reasons. If I overworked my body then, I could shake it off and keep on going. Now, after a strenuous workout, it takes days to get over it. However, after seeing what Dr Jo went through, I try not to complain “too” much. It could always be worse.

{{{Hugs}}} to Maggiemayday! I’m enjoying all those pictures you’ve been sharing of Larry. He was an interesting man.

{{{Hugs}}} to PBmom on your recovery. Your hubby does rock!
