I work in a very strange, unpredictable business.  Three years ago, I was 100% certain that Dark Matter was dead and I was poised to go into production on another show I had developed.  Within the span of 24 hours, that other show was dead and Dark Matter was suddenly a go.  You just…never know.

The fact is, despite my fairly positive outlook on the subject, there’s not guarantee Dark Matter will come back for a fourth season – and no guarantee that if it does, I’ll be coming back with it.  I mean, who knows?  Three months from now, I could be all like –

May 3, 2017: Dark Matter Update!

So it’s always a good idea to hedge your bets.  Hope for the best but prepare for the worst.  And, as far as worst goes, it probably won’t be all that bad: maybe another show, maybe L.A., maybe the impetus I need to finally cash out of the Vancouver real estate market and buy that place in Tokyo!

Time will tell.

Also, ratings!  So get the word out.  Dark Matter premieres on Syfy and Space Channel on Friday June 9th with a double episode premiere starting at 8:00 p.m. (after which the show returns to its regular 9:00 p.m. time slot for June 16th).  And then Monday June 12th at 8:00 p.m., Syfy UK will be airing their own season 3 double bill.

AND, immediately following that double bill, will be the premiere of After DarkDark Matter’s very own after show…

Each episode brings together cast, crew, fans and experts to discuss storylines, go behind the scenes, and debate what’s next for the series’ protagonists.

  1. Dark Matter without Joseph Mallozzi wouldn’t be Dark Matter, to me. I mean , I’d still watch it, but it just wouldn’t be the same. So, stay! 🙂

I’m glad to hear that After Dark will be available on space.ca. It’s a great idea.

    Looking forward to the trailer!

  2. I am so glad Dark Matter worked out, it is a great show. I also am certain that I am enjoying a different show from you in an alternate universe.

  3. Hi Joe
I agree with Thogar. Any bloopers would be great.
Yay After Dark will be on space.ca!!!

  4. “…there’s not guarantee Dark Matter will come back for a fourth season – and no guarantee that if it does, I’ll be coming back with it.”

Stop it! You say that every year between seasons. Admit it. If Dark Matter is rolling, you are the one in charge. Next to your girls, it’s your baby.

Yeah, bloopers are always a good thing.

  5. I’ve been saving these questions for the mailbag but it seems pertinent:

If SyFy chooses not to renew Dark Matter for a fourth (and fifth!) season what are your options? Can you shop the project around to other distributors or does SyFy hold the rights? Would you consider new media such as Netflix or Amazon?

If a live action continuation is not possible would you consider going back to Dark Matter roots and finish the story in a graphic novel or comic book?

Either way you better not leave us hanging like SG:A and SG:U!

  6. I hope for 2 or more seasons. The life of actors, writers, anyone creative and the unknown is almost inconceivable to me. I fear change.

  7. Don’t leave us. We will fight for this show. We want all planned 5 seasons please.

  8. Yes, Joe – what KathyC said…
You have to be back, as you have more story already planned to tell.

And a lot of fans that want to hear/see the stories.
    PLEASE!

  9. I wouldn’t worry about it not being renewed. The ratings, around the globe, have increased year on year. Add in reruns, on demand like Netflix, and purchases on iTunes and other media, you’re looking very healthy.

The fact Syfy have commissioned After Dark shows they’re committed to the series too, on top of the talk you mentioned a few months ago about a potential spin off series. Hopefully they’ll just confirm seasons 4 and 5 together, that way you can get the whole story out and know where you stand for the next few years.

In my opinion- nothing to worry about. BUT Dark Matter needs you at the helm. It’s your series!

  10. suspens dans votre série, suspens sur votre blogue. Décidément vous savez nous garder fidèle!

  11. Wow, you have some heavy thoughts doing laps your brain. What kind of offers did you get from L. A.? Remember to work in a driver (in your contract) if you take that one!

Wherever you go, it will work out. You didn’t love Toronto at first but now, you’re going to miss the restaurants.

I couldn’t work with that lack of security. However, “Fortune favors the bold”.

  12. @Leon Wilson
@The ratings, around the globe, have increased year on year

That’s actually not true. The Nielsen ratings have seen a decline, which is normal for any show.

Fun fact, more viewers watched Dark Matter via DVR last season. The DVR audience was also slightly younger than the live one. This is one of the factors people should be considering when looking at the shows ratings. The audience has been fragmented for a while. People are watching live, dvr, online etc. The abundance of choice for any show has inevitably affected live audiences.

But really, wait for the shows premiere. Fast forward a few months and you’ll see that Season 4 renewal.

  13. Don’t sweat it. You’ll be renewed for the duration of your 5 season plan. And before you move to Tokyo, we have to do lunch. So cool your jets!

Blooper reels are always awesome. Stargate had the BEST bloopers in the history of SciFi.

  14. I agree with gforce on that one. I hope you do get to stay around for S4 and I’m feeling very confident it will be renewed, especially when they renewed 12 Monkeys for another (and last season) before this season had yet to air.

That will be fun about “After Dark” and I’m glad they are going to let the US view it, too. I always liked when Falling Skies did their aftershow on the internet although, to be fair, I didn’t always watch it exactly after the show aired; it depended on my work schedule.

I agree with your approach to life — prepare for the worst; hope for the best. It has served me well over all these years. I also find that if I prepare for the worst and learn to accept that it won’t be the end of the world if the worst happens (unless of course it IS the end of the world–LOL) then any slightly better outcome is so wonderful because you see to be more grateful for anything, even the littlest thing.
