It might probably come as a surprise to many of you, but Akemi and I have been thinking about it for a while now.  I’m not getting any younger, we have a lot of love to give and the time just felt right.  And so, after much consideration, we submitted an adoption application and held our breath.  Then, last week, we received the joyous news.  Our application had been approved!

And our lives are about to change.

We’re a little nervous – after all, this IS a big step – but we’re confident we’ll be great parents.

And sometime before Christmas, we’ll be welcoming this little girl to the family…

November 20, 2016: We’re Adopting!

Her name is Suzie.  Although I’m a firm believer in never changing a dog’s name, Akemi feels a new name offers  a fresh start.  We’ve compromised and will call her Suji (aka Sujiko) which is pretty damn close.

Anyway, Suzie/Suji is 11 and spent the last year or so of her life living in a barn. But roughing it will be a thing of the past for this little lady as she’ll settle into the posh comfort of our bi-coastal digs – a house with fenced-in front and back yards in Vancouver, and a roomy apartment just around the corner from a dog park (and a nice big patio for emergency runs) in Toronto.  She is going to be SPOILED!  The poor gal suffers from some rear leg weakness that sees her struggle a little, but she comes with a snazzy set of wheels (which she apparently hates).  Lucky for her, we have Jelly’s old low-mileage stroller parked in the hall, just perfect for those parkside promenades.

November 20, 2016: We’re Adopting!

We’ll keep you updated on her ETA.

  1. Joe, here’s your Sunday blog tribute post, written by the one and only @Drea:

    For your 10 year blogiversary,
I have a teeny-weeny-tiny bit of a secret to reveal.
Something I’ve never shared with anyone until now.

While things like driving and sake serve to summon forth the muse for your writing,10 years ago I discovered the most amazing thing, that has never once failed me, in all these years.

Your blog is the vehicle that successfully drives “my” muse whenever she truly needs a lift.

It was never when you made entries about restaurants, recipes, chocolate chip cookies,or books, travel, pups, movie reviews, or the making of great TV.
(Although, those entries were all equally fun to wholeheartedly devour).
Rather, the wealthiest oil spring would spontaneously gush when you were simply being you writing about whatever slightly deeper thought was on your mind at that particular, forever doomed to be, fleeting moment in time
and the prose would come flowing out of you naturally. As if, somehow, by magic.

And I wouldn’t be at all surprised to learn I’m not the only one whose most playful wordsmithery you inspire.

Which is why my anniversary gift to you is something to serve as an additional motivator to keep writing and striving to reach new heights whenever you feel like quitting.

Cheers! -Here’s to the next 10 years!

    XO -Drea”

  2. That is wonderful news Joe! Wow, Susie/Suji will be incredibly lucky to have you and Akemi as her new caretakers. I look forward to reading your updates on her arrival !

  3. Joe, she’s adorable! Congrats on your new arrival! Xoxo (for the dog, not you–sorry).

  4. AAAAAAWWWWWWW!! Congrats!!! Holy Hanna she WILL BE spoiled to say the least!! But what a lucky pup.

btw, did I miss a day or are you blogging from another time zone?

  5. Congratulations!! I’m so happy for the both of you – and for all of us that get to follow all your adventures together. Suji is certainly coming into a loving home, and whether she knows it or not, a loving and encouraging blog family as well. I can’t wait to meet her.

Wait, was there some other thing you were suggesting other than a new doggie daughter? I can’t imagine.

  6. I knew it, I knew it!… I could tell you were going to adopt. Yay!
Most happy congratulations to you and Akemi AND to new gal on the block, Suji (beautiful name!). She is gonna be, from now on, so lucky, comfortable, happy.
I’m so happy for you all 🐾 She’s a sweetie.
Gosh, that’s really made my day 😊

  7. I was thinking, I’ll be curious to hear how Lulu and Bubba take to the new addition. Some adjustment there, I’m thinking.

  8. Congrats to Suzie/Suji! She doesn’t know it yet but she hit the home jackpot!!! Is she a full pug? She has some wired hair thing going on. Makes her super cute though.

  9. What was I thinking? …. “Dog” all the way! Congratulations on your upcoming bundle of joy! I am so happy for you and Akemi. And congratulations to Suji for just winning the lottery and going to live in Joe and Akemi’s Disneyland, where everything she will ever need or want will be given to her. And two sweet siblings on top of that! Looking forward to meeting her, learning more about her, and seeing her in action.

  10. OMG! JOE! ‘That’ really is BIG news. CONGRATS!
    Susie is absolutely adorable!! <3

I've so many questions – but will need to hold off till after dinner because I've neighbors coming over to join me shortly.

    In the meantime …
-here is your next clue about your grand finale 10 yr blogiversary gift:

    Clue #7

:This is a gift that will keep on giving for as long as you yourself feel inspired to keep on giving. Albeit, is most definitely a family project that
requires everyone of your readers and everyone in our blog reg family to do so. The more participation from you and our blog family.
the grander the gift becomes. 🙂

    Clue #1:

    Clue #2:

    Clue #3:

Clue #4: A teasing echo of clue #2

    Clue #5:

    Clue #6:

  11. Awesome news. I had thought of you and Akeminehen I saw a pug on a rescue site here in Toronto the other day. I couldn’t be happier for the family. Congratulations.

  12. I am SO proud and happy for you. The two of you are already great parents and being the Forever Home for Senior puppies is just wonderful – !!!

  13. You knew what we were thinking. Didn’t you… Time to dive in and enjoy life to the fullest…

  14. Congratulations! Suji has indeed hit the lottery. She looks adorable with those big expressionate eyes. I’ll be praying that all goes smoothly with Lulu and Bubba integration.

  15. Has Akemi decided on a meaning for Suji’s name? Care to share?
I like Suji’s face. She looks like a smart dog. I wish her and your household a smooth adjustment.

  16. That news made my weekend feel so complete. I agree with everyone else who has chimed in. Suji is going from the ghetto to being the Princess of Bel Air. The new Fresh Princess of bicoastal Canada. I’m so moved that you have all found each other. I can’t wait to see Akemi make adaptive clothing. I hope they all get along wonderfully.

Congratulations to all of you for opening your hearts and truly giving her a real “forever” home. So happy for all of you and can’t wait to here about all the adventures. <3

  17. Congratulations, Joe and Akemi, on the new addition to your family! Suji looks like a sweetheart. I’m sure she’ll settle right in. I love it when senior dogs and cats get forever homes. Good for you!

Congrats (belated), also, on the 10th anniversary of the blog! It’s been a great decade here. <3

  18. Congrats! As soon as I saw the title of this blog I knew what you were talking about. We know you too well, Joe. Now, if you were adopting a human THAT would have been a surprise!

  19. Congratulations to both of you!
She’s scored the jackpot of a forever home.

Your entry reminds me of when I told my Father In Law I wanted to put a big baby carriage on the back of my bike. He was tearing up and going in for the hug before I could say ‘So Ralph can come on longer walks’.
Glass half full, it occurred during a hospital visit while he had swelling of the brain, so he may not remember the awkward moment.

  20. Congratulations Joe and Akemi—–you didn’t fool me for a second ! I look forward to meeting Suji next summer.

  21. Congrats on your 10th blog Anniversay, and congrats for little Suji

    Questions for Roger Cross.

Given you are a really busy actor what attracted you to Dark Matter?

Do you keep your schedule free hoping for a renewal when the season ends?

It looks like you all have a great camaraderie filming, is that the case on other sets you have worked on? (on dfferent programs) Is there ever a case of just getting the job done and getting out?

    Thanks! 🙂

  22. Thought you were going to say you were bringing home a Great Dane. Feeeew. Dodged that bullet. 😁

  23. On the 18th, PBMom mentioned Amazon Smile. Just a note: Smile donations can only be made on the Web version of Amazon, not the iPhone/iPad apps.

  24. I love Suji’s inscrutable expression in that last pic: “Yes, yes, my plan for global domination is working!” Did Suji live in a barn or was it a Jason Bourne-style safehouse? Congratulations on the new team member, looking forward to lots of pics of Suki, Bubba and Lulu enjoying Winter in Toronto. And tell Suji the microfiche is hidden in a first edition of War and Peace in a reading room in Zagreb, should she choose to accept the mission.

  25. Congratulations!! I’m still smiling over @Patricia’s bay leaf comment. A big welcome to Suji! I know that adopting a special needs animal takes lots of love and patience. You both are special in undertaking this added responsibility. Wish I lived closer to help out. I love dogs!

On a side note: went to Asheville, NC for a girls weekend. The drink of choice besides a margarita, was bourbon. My friend brought Angel’s Envy. I found it strong and best served with egg nog but was also able to slowly sip it. She also brought a Tennessee Honey Whiskey which was quite tasty. We were able to work in lots of good food varying from Jamacian to Moroccan to Italian. On our last day we had brunch, before leaving, at a local bakery, “The Well-Bred Bakery”. I had the sausage strata with a side of curry chicken salad. We all shared a Mountain Eclair which was huge, dividing into 4 pieces and still had left overs. I thought of you several times during the trip knowing you’d enjoy the food. We made a pact several years ago to only go to “local” restaurants. No chains. The food in Asheville is delicious!

    1. @Maggie L80: My sister lives in Asheville. I went to see her back in 2012. I LOVED it. Took a day trip out to Cherokee. We went to eat some place called Posana. She took me on the tourist bus ride. She anticipates a move to Virginia in the next year or two once her dog passes away (old age–has kidney failure so it is a matter of when). When her dog passes and she can get her house sold, she is joining a monastery to take the next step in discernment to be a sister. She has had quite the interesting life and I was so fortunate to have benefitted from learning all she wanted to share along the way since I was a child. Right now she is a nurse BSN, and has her master’s in comparative religions, pastoral care and ministry from Loyola University. She was SUPPOSED to come here last month or the beginning of November, but Abby (her dog’s name of course because she found her at the entrance to the monastery in Conyers, GA where she previously lived–she was in charge of the healthcare facility for the monks there) took a turn for the worse and the vet suggested she not travel (because Theresa wants to be there at her time of passing). But she plans to come here to visit before going to Virginia.

  26. Look Joe! Creedence Clearwater Revival predicted a long time ago you would get this dog and even wrote a song about her for you…

Oh, Suji Q, Oh, Suji Q
Oh, Suji Q, Baby I love you, Suji Q
I like the way you walk
I like the way you talk
I like the way you walk I like the way you talk, Suji Q

Well, say that you’ll be true
well, say that you’ll be true,
Well, say that you’ll be true and never leave me blue, Suji Q

Well, say that you’ll be mine
Well, say that you’ll be mine,
Well, say that you’ll be mine, baby all the time, Suji Q

Oh Suji Q, Oh Suji Q
Oh Suji Q, Baby I love you, Suji Q

I like the way you walk
I like the way you talk
I like the way you walk I like the way you talk, Suji Q.

  27. Congratulations on the new addition to the family!! Looking forward to more pictures. thanks for sharing.

  28. I think it amazing you adopted Suzie/Suji. I am the photographer that took the wheelchair pic you posted, If you would like I have several cute photos with Santa and Suji. If you want them let me know and I will send them your way
