I’m pleased to announce that Melissa O’Neil (Dark Matter’s kick-ass commander, TWO) has happily offered to find the time in her busy shooting and stunt rehearsal schedule to answer YOUR questions.  Leave your burning queries in this blog’s comments section.  I’ll gather them over the course of the next three or four days and then send them her way.  She’s ready…

A couple of questions here.  What’s the deal with that cage?  And what the heck are those metal obstructions?

Oh, okay.  Now about that cage…

Um, this does NOT bode well.

Looks like another busy week ahead.  Ivon will be out on location, overseeing the action with Director Mairzee Almas, while I prep Episode 212 with Stargate alum Will Waring (who hasn’t changed a bit!).  Wonder how he’ll work a pineapple into THIS episode.  For those who don’t know what I’m talking about (Pineapple?) or don’t know Will, here’s a past fan Q&A to get you up to date:

I’m in the editing room tomorrow afternoon with fabulous editor Ben Wilkinson, finishing my pass on Peter DeLuise’s director’s cut of Episode 208 (I’m just going to go ahead and boldly declare it a fan favorite)…which means it’s time for you, the fans, to vote on a NEW episode title.  Stay tuned to this blog for details!

’til next time…

P.S. Did I mentioned Melissa O’Neil has agreed to do a fan Q&A and that you should definitely post your questions for her?

  1. My questions for Melissa is : Will we learn more about Two’s back story?
Prepping for scenes- how much time do you spent training for fight scenes?

  2. Oh cool, Q&A.First, my heart goes out to y’all in the Northern parts of our country where Spring is well not sprung yet. I used to live in them parts and when the weather isn’t what you want it to be or should be, for me it was depressing. Hang in there it has to warm up eventually.

Ok so my questions for Miss O’Neil. What or who influenced you into an acting career? What is the most challenging aspect about acting for you? And, do you have to keep Joe in line like you do with the rest of of Raza crew?

  3. Oh and Thank you Melissa for taking the time to answer questions. We do appreciate it. 🙂

  4. Questions for Melissa:
    1) Do you do some of your own stunts, or use a stunt doulble, or not use one?
    2) How does it feel to play a character who is pretty non-objectified?
    3) When do you think they’ll bring a four-legged character into the fold?
(Admittedly, I’ve been joking about that in the comments section here)

  5. Ok, this is a series of questions about the same subject, Stunts! I would really like to know, between you & the powers that be on the set, how do you decide when a stunt double is used in a scene? Do you ever insist that you do it even though a stunt double is recommended? Have you ever tried a stunt scene & then decided it would be better for a double to perform the scene? What is your worst injury if any on Dark Matter?

Thank you so much for taking our questions! Very generous of you.

  6. Can’t wait for 201, let alone 208! hee hee That’s a pretty cool workstation Mairzee’s got there. Would make a nice outdoor cocktail-type table, perfect for hanging around. I don’t think I want to know what that cage is for…

  7. My question for Melissa is: What is it like coming from a musical background to a show like Dark Matter? Is there any chance we will get to see Two showing off her singing skills sometime?

  8. Melissa, one of the questions that “Dark Matter” asked is at the core are people adherently good/bad? Are we merely the sum of our memories, the result of environmental conditioning? Are we more than either of these philosophies? Do we have the ability to choose?

  9. I thought those giant caltrops were dropped from planes to give beach stormers shelter against gun fire. At least, that’s what I used them for when I played Conker’s Bad Fur Day.

Meat hooks and bone scraps…dammit, Joe! I mean Mr. Mallozzi.

  10. Hi Joe
    Question for Melissa

    Hi Melissa
What drew you to Dark Matter? The high energy action scenes, the mystery, a show set in space? Or was it something else?
You are great as #2, they couldn’t have picked someone better for the role.

    Elminster

  11. Looks like a lovely, refreshing Spring day in Ontario. Some how I am wishing I was there considering the current atmospheric condition of Bangkok. I greatly anticipate watching Bill’s (and the others’ ) fine directing work and look forward to trying to spot the Pinapple. Since you said that he has not changed, I will have to go back to Continuum and rewatch his episode (believe he directed a few shows).

  12. Thanks Melissa for taking time to do this Q&A! My question: How has the revelation that TWO is bio-engineered impacted your conception and portrayal of her? Thanks!

  13. Question for Melissa O’Neil: If there was one character/actor in season 2 you’d like to see Two hang out with/have more scenes with, who would it be?

  14. For TWO / Melissa
What might be what you consider the best and worst aspects of your character which you play? Has TWO awakened any internal perspectives in what you may wish to incorporate for your self?

  15. Hi, Melissa! I have a few questions. Most of them are stupid, but consider the source…

-Are you a science fiction fan? If yes, what are your favorites, apart from Dark Matter?

-What’s your favorite part of working on Dark Matter?

-Who’s the biggest goofball on set? (I’m guessing Lemke!)

-Did you manage to avoid accidentally tattooing yourself on that fancy-looking floor this year?

-Has your experience filming in season 2 changed from last year? If so, in what ways?

-Who flubs their lines the most? (I’m guessing Lemke! Again!)

-Do you ever participate in Cat Shirt Thursdays? If you do, can we get a picture?

-If you’re part of the Dark Matter Whiskey club (or not), what’s your favorite drink?

-Who’s the biggest practical joker on set? (I’m guessing Lemke! He’s just suspicious looking.)

-How do season one’s revelations about TWO’s background affect your character in season two?

-Did you have to learn any new fighting skills, or any other skills, for season two?

-What’s your favorite thing to find on the craft table? (Sorry, I’m writing this while hungry, which is whenever I’m conscious.)

-What are you going to do once you’re done filming season two?

-Will you and the other cast be live tweeting again this year?

Thanks for taking the time to answer our questions. We know you’re all busy, so please know we appreciate the time and effort, both in answering questions and in working on the show.

  16. Four questions from me

    1. What would be your ideal alternate universe persona for Two?
    2. If you, Melissa, could travel anywhere in the universe, where would you go and why?
    3. If the Raza crew ever discovered a planet populated entirely by kittens, do you think that would be the end of Twos story?
    4. If Two and Alex Rook were alone in a room together, with no one around for miles, how pleasant would the atmosphere be?

  17. “Director Mairzee Almas sets up at her impromptu work station”… or a sacrificial altar. Look out!

For Melissa: What do you want to do next in a few years when Dark Matter is over? You have certainly handled the “star in a science fiction series” quite well. What’s next on your bucket list?

  18. Melissa and Joe thanks for doing this for the fans. I really love this show and can’t wait for season 2 and future seasons to come. Tony

  19. Hi Melissa!!! I was wondering how it’s been working with Melanie? So excited to see Two and Nyx’s dynamic! (Also how is your hair so perfect help a girl out haha)

  20. Joe, those barricades should be on a beach in Normandy not in the forests of Canada. Not a good sign. Definitely a stronghold of some sort. Trying to keep someone or something out! I’m not as worried about the cage as I am the room of horrors with meat hooks and a slaughter table. Vaguely reminiscent of Terminus. Don’t eat the meat!

Melissa, thanks in advance for taking time out to answer our burning questions. So many good questions have already been asked.

–Do you have an actor/actress that you’d love to work with?
    –Dream role?
–Favorite movie? Mine is Star Wars: A New Hope, the original version. Han did shoot first.
    –Favorite book or books?
–Most challenging scene in Dark Matter to shoot? Favorite scene – can be in either Season 1 or 2? Favorite set?
–Do you have any say on your wardrobe?

Hope all had a great weekend! I traveled to Nashville to meet some of the cast of Gotham, The Walking Dead, Z Nation. Highlight of the weekend was meeting Sean Pertwee from Gotham, Dog Soldiers, Event Horizon, & Equalibrium. His dad was the Third Doctor. Awesome stories.

  21. Hi Melissa,

Like everyone else I want to thank you for taking the time to do this Q&A! Very awesome of you!

I had two questions but in writing them they seem to be multiplying…sorry in advance:

    1) While they are both forms of storytelling, theater and film work are different in many ways. I was curious as to which you prefer and why?

    2) When filming any given scene how close to the script do you like to play it? Do you like to (or can you not given time constraints) ad lib and explore different approaches to scenes where possible?

    3) Are there any favorite mementos that you may have “acquired” in season 1? (feel free to ignore this question if answering it gets you cut off from craft services for a time!)

    4) When you get a new script do you read the whole thing first or focus in on who’s butt Two is kicking this episode?

Thank you and best wishes on the filming of the rest of the season. Please tell the rest of the cast and crew that we think they are ALL awesome!!

  22. Thanks for doing this Joe & Melissa.

What’s your favorite episode in season 2?
Do you do any of your stunts?
Do you have a favorite set?
What do you think the significance is to the order the crew woke up?

  23. Melissa, Thanks for the great performance you have given us so far, and can hardly wait for the new seasons episodes. I hope the series lasts a long time but worry. you have a well tones physic and people do change after a period of time. But your characters nanites would keep you in shape over a very long lifetime hopefully if you can get past Dr. Rook’s (Will Wheatons) programmed decay instructions. They did something to your body in episode12? Maybe it can be reversed by replication of sampled nanites preserved from earlier medical biopsies. the Android should have preserved them and can reverse the changes.

Speaking of shape are you learning martial arts with Alex Mallari? As a performer you and the rest of the crew must work out ungodly hours and have tight dietary regiment to keep the shape needed for the show. That would explain how well your keeping you figure.

I hope to hear you perform a song and dance maybe next season in one of the episodes. Maybe install a holographic room on the ship that lets them recreate various situations as well the various crew their various fantasies. Maybe yours that of being in a old fashioned musical. The wizard of OZ anyone? One the tin man, Three the cowardly loin. two as Dorothywho sings , and such , five The good witch? and such…

Finally I’ve been wonting to see if Mr. Mallazi if going to finally name Zoie Palmers’s Android character. If He hasn’t decided on a name yet, I vote for “A” as in “Alpha” or Android. It would give a good ploy for disguising what and who she is on a audible comm link. she would be able to mimic any voice. Anyway It would also make her more tightly one of the crew members verse a piece of the onboard equipment when referenced.

  24. Thanks for the Q&A opportunity Melissa

My questions are regarding the renewal of the show. Did you wait on tenterhooks like the rest of us to see if Dark Matter was renewed? Or are you more circumspect when it comes down to it, already looking for the next “job”?

Do you have to check with anyone before taking another role just in case the show is renewed and the timings would clash? Did you get an early whisper of renewal and asked to pencil in some dates? In such an ephemeral industry I imagine you cannot pass up work, but shooting a whole season takes a long time.

    Thanks a lot

  25. Questions for Melissa:

    1. I’m a fan of the One/Two relationship or OTR. I imagine incarceration will put a halt to it. Where do you see their relationship headed in Season 2?

    2. Is there an upcoming fight sequence you can’t wait for us to see? Does Two get any new weapons?

    3. Now that they are off the Raza will any of the characters use their real names rather than the numbers?

    4. What’s the coolest scene you filmed for Episode 209 (written by my favourite person Ivon Bartok 😊)?

    5. I’m a big fan of Idol but I’m in Australia and we don’t get the Canadian version. What was your toughest challenge on the show?

    6. What’s been your most challenging episode to film to date and why (if you can say)?

    7. What’s going to happen to the fish tank?

Thanks Melissa. Congratulations on your kickass performances.

Cheers, Maryanne aka Chev or @imwebgurl (Twitter)

  26. ps if there’s too many questions, just pick the best ones of mine or the ones you can answer as there’s sooooo many secrets… Thanks for this Melissa 😊 Chev

  27. Wow, everyone posted good questions! I’ll give Melissa a break and not ask anymore. 🙂 I do look forward to your answers though and thank you!!!!

  28. Re: Yesterday’s entry: tearful farewell? Uh-oh.

Guns! The two on the bottom in the case look like the Remington 870 Tactical. It’s a great shotgun. I modded mine with a collapsible stock. Although mine isn’t made of rubber.

Melissa O’Neil is awesome. She really brings 100% and it shows. Although I don’t have any questions for her. Generally speaking, I’m pretty bad at asking questions in these Q&A sessions you’ve done over the years.

  29. So many questions already. Gotta keep you busy.

You mentioned that you played Second Life (does one “play” SL?), and you voiced a major character in The Division.
Do you play games yourself, and if so, what?

Kudos, Melissa. You seem pretty great. Also, not looking like a bum.

  30. Thanks for the Q & A 😄

What were your first impressions when working with a ‘green screen’?

Who’ll be Two’s ‘love’ interest, in Season 2 – One or Three? 😉

    What’s your favourite ice-cream flavour?

    What’s been the best prop?

  31. Hi Melissa, my questions for you are as follows. 1. What was your initial reaction when you found out you got the role of TWO? 2. If you could play any other character on the show, who would it be and why? By the way, your doing an amazing job. Thanks for taking the time to answer our questions.

  32. Questions for Melissa

    1. What intrigues you most about your character TWO and what keeps you believing/so deeply invested in her?

2.What do you personally relate most to about your character?

    3. Are there any special technical abilities you’d like to see your character develop via her internal bots?
i.e: Ability to climb upside down and hang from ceiling like spider man, ability to walk through solid objects, to hear/read peoples thoughts, change hair/eye color on demand etc. etc.

  33. Hmm….what to ask, what to ask….

    Questions for Melissa:

Did you do any “prep work” for your role as TWO in respect to strong female leads?

I’ve noticed in other shows(like Stargate SG1, Star Trek: Voyager, etc.) the female lead doesn’t really stand out, in a sense. She acts, carries herself, and does her job just like everyone else simply because of the fact that her gender is never really brought up in any way, shape, or form. Her weaknesses are used as frequently as all of the other team members’ own respective weaknesses. She contributes just as much as everyone else. A strong female lead doesn’t have to be “in your face” about her gender to be a great character. In fact, the best ones usually never even address the issue. Even TV shows know that all that should matter is if you can do the job well. It doesn’t matter who you are, what you look like, or what your personal history is, if you’re better than the others, you get the spot.

Does Alex share any kind of workout tips for you with respect to combat scenes?

Are there any character plot points you’d like to see happen with TWO? (Like a strange situation that results in some sort of weird repressed memory or something?)

Would you ever like to see TWO dress in colors other than black? (Not that you don’t look elegant in black… 😉 )

How often do you bring your dog to set?

That’s about all I can think of for now. Keep up the great work, Melissa!!

    Thanks,
    -Mike A.

  34. What does Two enjoy doing in her downtime (when she’s not kicking ass and trying to keep everyone alive)?

  35. Hi Melissa, my name is Jeffrey. I honestly just want to say you are truly a amazing, beautiful, & talented actress. I was wondering how much are you looking forward to Season 2 of Dark Matter? How much work did you have to put in when you find out that you are chosen to be part of the Dark Matter cast? Who is the most hilarious person in the Dark Matter Cast? Thanks and I hope you have a wonderful week.

  36. Super late to the party. Sorry, but life turned into a major suck from this point forward. I’ll try to catch up. I need to get my mind off of things. But it will depend on Patrick.
