September 23, 2015: Plotting My Future! With Special Guest Star…carl Binder!

Today was Day #1 of my whirlwind seventeen and a half hour Hollywood tour.  I’m in town looking to lock down a new U.S. agent and have lined up meetings with three terrific prospects.  First up was a duo with a breathtaking literary background, connections in the comic book world and, perhaps most importantly, a surprisingly thorough appreciation for whiskey.  In fact, I’d say fully half the meeting was spent discussing bourbon.  A great, great sit-down.

And while I was out working it, Akemi was out and about re-familiarizing herself with the neighborhood.

Apparently, her trip to Whole Foods was a colossal disappointment.

Akemi displays her trademark Japanese anger, taking her frustrations out on an art installation.

Hopefully, tomorrow’s visit to Trader Joe’s will perk up her spirits.

The last time we were in town, I let Akemi decide the restaurant.  She had a choice between Ink and L.A. Farm.  She chose (unwisely) the latter.  We rectified that grievous error this time out by going to Ink where we were joined by longtime Stargate Executive Producer (and weird food taste tester) Carl Binder – and enjoyed a splendid meal.  Some of the highlights…

Salt and charcoal potatoes with sour cream and black vinegar.  Tasted like camping!

Apple, caramel, shortbread with burnt wood semi-freddo.  No, really.

Tomorrow = two more meetings, Trader Joe’s, Spago’s, and an ice cream sandwich!

Meanwhile, back on the home front…

Fear not.  They’re in good hands with sis and Daisy!

  1. So good to see Carl Binder again!! He looks fabulous!!! He didn’t take you to a Chili’s restaurant? Anybody recognize you and Akemi yet in Beverly Hills?

  2. That one dish looks like the puff ball mushrooms that are growing at the edge of my woods right now! It’s great to see Carl back in your blog.

  3. Trader Joe’s has a fantastic version of the Chicago Mix popcorn. It can be found in a bag labeled the completely uninspired but refreshingly unambiguous Cheddar and Caramel Popcorn Mix. I suggest an extra suitcase to allow for sufficient snacking back home.

  4. Whole Foods is more impressive if you’re already from an area where it’s hard to find pretty fruit and tomatoes that aren’t shipped completely unripe. I’m in an area with a mix of bland-food stores for the masses and higher end stores so when Whole Foods came to town it was nothing inaccessible here, just higher prices. Even the people who often go to the higher end stores noticed the prices.

The Trader Joe’s here seems to specialize in keeping a huge diversity of boxed foods, shelved and frozen. The prices are reasonable for foods that seem like novelties around here, frozen macarons and Permapaks of exotic soups. It probably is worth the trip if you’d be interested in FedExing some oddball pantry food for quick side dishes back home. It used to be the best place to get gluten-free or organic, but you can get that anywhere now. Ours doesn’t have enough fresh food to make it a weekly destination and the fresh food prices aren’t in my reach.

  5. I ate so much of my Devil’s foods that I can’t tolerate them anymore. I’ve developed allergies and intolerances. Sugar could put me literally on the floor within two hours, so I’d only attempt that close to bedtime. Not knowing if that effect is falling asleep, passing out, or going into a coma is disturbing enough that binges are out of the question.

  6. Yay! I love the big smiles on Akemi and Carl! Hope you guys are scheduling some pool time, though I’ve never seen anyone actually get into the hotel pools in LA, mostly they seem to be for sitting around and wishing they’d bring the heat lamps closer.

That Warner Bros tour is fun if you splurge for the VIP tour. And do your weird food purchases in Santee. Well first you have to find Santee but once you do it’s like a sunny Blade Runner. Oh, go to the Bradbury Building!

  7. If you have the ability to get to one, I still recommend trying Slater’s 50/50. I’d like to call it a gourmet burger place, but we all know burgers don’t really have a true gourmet option, it’s still just a burger. But their’s are absolutely amazing. Every time I’m in LA, I go:

Their bacon-infused, house made ketchup is fantastic as well as their chipotle mayo. Their sweet potato fries paired with the pumpkin dipping sauce is just amazing.

While it’s nice to see Carl again, I think something’s wrong with him….he’s smiling! He never used to do that for your blog pictures before, what gives? 😉

  8. Looks like a great dinner, and so cool to see Carl around!

I do hope that Trader Joe’s was everything that Akemi hoped for. I know she was very much looking forward to it.

Damn, those are some cute dogs you have there, Joe! I don’t know if I could ever leave them behind!

  9. In other news, somehow – despite all the other things I have/will have going on this Fall – I wound up volunteering to perform in a musical that a teacher’s group from a local high school are putting on in November. (“Back to the 80’s!”) The music teacher there is the wife of a good friend of mine from work, and they needed some people to fill extra roles. So now, I get to be one of them there ACK-tors. Plus sing, too! And memorize a whole bunch of stuff. Yay! :S

  10. Yes! Good to see Carl again – hello you! Nice to see you smiling 😉

So, the INK servers wear all black? Notice the person standing behind Carl’s left shoulder? I guess that means it is a fancy place and I probably will never get there. Can’t say those food photos inspire me either, sorry.

Akemi is looking adorable in that metallic-ally dress. And I too would punch out that so-called “art installation”. Rather looks like a bumper off a semi truck.

Bubba and Lulu, while really precious, also look a bit pensive. Have you told them they are soon to go flying again? Paws to the sky!

  11. So nice to see Mr Carl again , and his smiling face, the food looks good, especially dessert! Akemi is as pretty as ever and seems to be enjoying herself, nice camera shots. ~~Those big sad eyes on the pups would make me feel guilty, bring me a present and come home soon{{{}}}}(I am sure its what they are saying)

  12. If only you were here longer and could try from custard at my favorite place in cypress and also shop unusual soda pop up in Los Angeles 🙂
