Finishing up our discussion of Dark Matter Episode #102…

1) It’s Bubba Time!

The boys prep for battle – and THREE introduces his guns…which, regular readers of this blog already know, were named after my dogs…

The original Lulu and Bubba!

2) Game on!

Comin’ at ya!

This big’s action piece kicks off with an amazing oner compliments of fab director T.J. Scott.  The long take STARTS ON the Ferrous Corps guards taking fire, then SWINGS OVER to catch them rappelling, FOLLOWS them down and up the stairs where on gets blasted by BUBBA, HANGS ON ONE and THREE as they exchange fire with the enemy, PAN OVER to THREE leaping over a railing (one of my favorite beats!), then PAN BACK to ONE drawing the assist from Mireille and OVER TO more mayhem.

There’s a great FOUR sequence in which he jumps down to save a miner, snagging one of the corporate guards, then takes out a second guard.  The final version sees this scene cut out here but, in the director’s cut, it actually continues with –

FOUR hoisting himself up and running the length of the overhead pipe, jumping the railing, and taking out another two guards on the raised platform.  No stunt person required.  It was all Alex Mallari Jr. and I wish I could have kept these beats in the final cut.

Alex Mallari Jr. (FOUR) gets the drop on the Dark Matter crew.

All of our main players get their opportunity to shine: ONE gunning down the oncoming guards, FOUR proving why he’s a master of the blade, THREE blasting with Bubba and then two-fisting it.

It all culminates in a Butch & Sundance moment with our heroes, hunkered down and SIX facing certain death at the hands of Sgt. Voss.

3) Shields!

June 26, 2015: Dark Matter Episode #102! Pics! Vids! Secrets!

One of my favorite moments in this episode is TWO’s authoritative command: “Shields!” and the cut to the Ferrous Corp. destroyer opening fire on The Raza.  Then, the two Mikkei Cruisers arrive, flanking our hero ship.  Love it!

4) Blaze of glory?

Butch and Sundance, Dark Matter style.

Facing seemingly insurmountable odds, the boys decide to go out in a blaze of glory.  They jump up, guns at the ready only to realize – the enemy has left.

5) I got a better offer.

Behind the scenes on episode #2.

A vexed Commander Nieman pays TWO a visit and discovers her in the company of her new allies: Commanders Sakey and Truffault of the MCS Sujin and Murukami. Commander Truffault, played by the marvelous Torri Higginson (Stargate: Atlantis’s Elizabeth Weir), informs Nieman that the planet is now under the protectorate of The Mikkei Combine.  I love Torri’s performance here, parts Weir, May West, and all sorts of kickass.

It’s nice to have friends in high places.

Who knows if or when we’ll ever see her character again (Episode #110).

Torri grabs a snack after laying a verbal beatdown on a corporate rival.

6) For me, right now, I think that place is up on that ship.

June 26, 2015: Dark Matter Episode #102! Pics! Vids! Secrets!

ONE bids Mireille a fond farewell.  They just went through hell, faced certain death, saved each other’s lives, and he risked all to help her and her people.  A goodbye kiss is perfectly acceptable.

P.S. Love that beautiful shot of ONE standing in the rain.  Thank you, director T.J. Scott.

7) We can spend some quality time getting to know each other.

June 26, 2015: Dark Matter Episode #102! Pics! Vids! Secrets!

TWO brings the rest of the crew up to speed on how it all went down.  It was brains over brawn as one of the women of The Raza saved the day.  Again (If you’re counting, TWO restores life support in the opener, turns off the security protocol that shuts down the android before she can kill the boys, the Android initiates the evasive maneuvers that allow them to dodge the missiles).  With some time to kill before the next space station stopover, they can spend some quality time getting to know each.  Which they will.  In a big way next episode!

8) Because we’re dangerous!

The episode is capped off with one of my very favorite sequences – directed by T.J. Scott, edited by Wendy Hallam, with music by Ben Pinkerton.  It’s a beautiful and haunting montage that touches on each of our crew members revealing, in the final beat, that all are, in fact, a list of suspects in the mystery surrounding their stolen identities.

YAY! TEAM! You go, Kenn Weeks of WormholeRiders!!

Yes, I’m a tad prejudice. Kenn can write wonderful reviews. He is very talented.

  2. I love the fish-like tank in mess hall, how cool! Great special effects tonight. I love 5, she is so inquisitive., are you sure she is not an android too?? Looking forward to next week. thanks to everyone for the great show!.

  3. Wow! Another episode flying by faster than the ship. Excellent story by Martin Gero. Full of humor.
    Favorite lines:

SIX to THREE: I like her (FIVE) a lot more than I like you.

Android: If you shoot him it will skew the results.

    TWO to Android: Good luck.
    Android: I don’t need it.
    TWO: Well, good luck anyway.
Android: No the oxygen. I don’t need it.

THREE: Or now. We could always talk about this now.

THREE standing there shaking his guns to see if they were loaded.

The android is too funny. When will they name the android? Or will they ever? I knew that the 2nd episode would not be the last time FIVE would be crawling around in the air vents. I think ONE and TWO are actually married. FIVE is their daughter.

And I’m getting in line for my kiss from ONE!

  4. Episode 3 just ended here in the Central Time zone. Here are my thoughts:

I loves me some Martin Gero writing. He’s brilliant, witty, and I’m sure he loves kids and small animals. However, it’s “couldn’t care less” not ” could care less”. Hate on me if you like, but Jace Corso is smarter than that.

I loved the montage of polygraphishness.

Three is still a dick. And he’s still not likable. I want him to be likable, galldarnit!

Five! Good on you, Kid…stealing dick’s ammunition.

Lots of activity with the Android…she did a fine job.

I think Six might be my favorite. He’s got a good heart with a touch of badassery mixed in.

    Nice work, Joe and Team.

  5. I said last night:
“A call-back to SG-1, you say? Hmmm…did I send that third email last night? *checks* Nope.

*wanders off, whistling a vaguely familiar tune*”

Well, for thr first and perhaps only time in this series, I’m…gasp!…RIGHT.
    😱
Anyone else see the parallel between FIVE as memory-keeper and Daniel in “Lifeboat”?
(Before you look it up, Brad Wright has the writing credit on that ep.)

  6. Hey! Get back here! You can’t end an episode like that and expect us to wait a whole week for the next episode.

  7. Congratulations, Joe.

I’ve read your blog for a long time, commented occasionally, and even made a couple mail bags. You got me to watch SyFy again.. After canceling Universe, Alphas, and a few other good shows without warning, I have been avoiding that channel. I’d heard Defiance was good, but couldn’t bring myself to watch for fear of it being a 1 season and out show. I could not however not watch your new show.

I see Stargate type banter, and I get the same feel, even in a different universe with different rules and new characters. While I wish Universe had run its course, I’ve always enjoyed the creativity you’ve brought to the screen. Thank you for making this show happen.

I’m just a random guy, I don’t know if it means much, but I like the television you make, and I hope you keep making it. I’m glad you found a way to make more after Universe, as much as I wish I could see the end to that story. I really hope this show gets the ratings it needs to allow SyFy to this show run it’s creative course. Good luck with all of it.

My condolences on the loss of Jelly. I hope she can find a place next to Maximus in the header of this blog.

  8. What a BLAST!! Best episode yet! We had humor. We had intrigue. We had suspense. We had…what the…WHAT???! Really enjoying all the characters – even ‘the dick’, as Jenny Horn calls him. 😉 The Android shined in this one, proving to be both amusing, and surprisingly human. Six was great, just really loving this guy and his “emotional content”. Five was terrific, she’s my ‘Abby’…you just never know what she’s going to say next. Four was both funny (“No.”) and unpredictable. I’m starting to think of him as the wild card. Three was delightfully obnoxious – I feel like calling him DiNozzo. 😉 One and Two are an interesting pair – One, though certainly courageous, has a naivete or…unworldliness…about him that makes him seem like a boy playacting at being a man, and Two is like the crew’s mother. Probably why my head was screaming in that one particular scene ‘Don’t kiss your mother!’

Three episodes in and I feel like I already know these characters well…yet I keep discovering new things and keep changing my mind about their intentions and loyalties. I’m sure by the end of next week’s episode I’ll have a different opinion about everyone! Still, these have been well-defined characters right from the get-go, and I have no trouble keeping track of who is who and who does what. I like that – a LOT. It makes it so much easier to connect to the characters, and – in turn – to care about the characters. Also this show, while suspenseful, intriguing, exciting, even humorous, is NOT confusing. I hate confusing shows where I just can’t follow anything, from who the characters are to whatever the heck is going on in the plot (like the first season of Agents of Shield – what a confusing mess that was!). Dark Matter, on the other hand, is a very easy show to watch, and – more importantly – to ENJOY.

Yes, Joey, I am being thoroughly entertained by your new baby! Well done, sir, well done!! 🙂

    das

  9. PS…The Android…’hands on’ moment. Reminded me of a certain someone who lent a helping hand to Sheppard a few years ago. It was…very satisfying. 🙂

    das

  10. @Ponytail – at whatever con the cast attends, instead of photo ops…for “One” there will be “Kissing Ops” with picture of course.

@Joe and all involved with Dark Matter – Loving Everything about this production. Well, except for the wait until another episode.

And, yeah, what Cat4444 and others said – leaving us hanging another eternity for the next episode. DRAT!.

  11. Hey Joe
You’re supposed to be helping them get out of trouble, not into more. LOL. I’m certainly glad I decided to record and save the episodes. It’ll give something to watch while waiting for season 2.

    Elminster

  12. Great episode! I love the boxes. Especially the box defined by the big, metal door within the biggest box of all: the ship! Metaphors for secrets, things hidden and things forgotten.

I agree, Ponytail: that hour went by incredibly fast!

@das: I didn’t catch the Todd moment, but now that you mention it…

  13. Blindspot? I’ll watch for it!

    Torri’s still gorgeous!

Loved the picture of Bubba and Lulu! Sweet and a little confused look on their faces. 😉 Still thinking of taking in another senior?

Loved the show last night! I’ve heard snippets about the Zobot getting some flak online. Is that true? Hope not because I think she’s awesome!

Does the actress, Zoe, just crack up between takes though? I mean, it would be hard to show so little emotion or reaction all the time. I would love to suppress my emotions. It reminds me of one of the Star Trek movies when Piccard turns to Data (after Data turned off his emotion chip) and says “Data, sometimes I envy you”. That line stuck in my head because it’s true. It would be nice to turn off our emotion chip.

FYI, the cupcakes turned out great! I’ve only had one because they are so rich. I’ve got my freezer full of them and I’m sending a pan of them to hubby’s work next week. Here’s the recipe if anyone wants to try it: http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/trisha-yearwood/german-chocolate-cake-with-butterscotch-frosting.html

  14. Ooooops sorry!! The “Good luck” conversation was between ONE and the Android not TWO. I knew I would get my numbers mixed up eventually… 🙂

@ sylvia – Yeah, maybe Marc Bendavid “ONE” could set up a kissing booth at the cons. 😆

Das wrote, “Probably why my head was screaming in that one particular scene ‘Don’t kiss your mother!’ “
See…, this is why they should leave each other alone until they find out who they are. Maybe ONE and TWO are brother and sister. Who knows? They do seem to have a “comfortable feeling” when they are around each other. I still now think they may be married.

Maybe FIVE wiped away their memories? She is a strange one. And I have theories about what FIVE discovered too. But will have to save it so I don’t spoil it just yet.

    I like THREE.

  15. Question please:
Does Zoie have to wear special contact lenses for when you guys “blank” her out? Or, is it special effects? or ?????

  16. Thank you, Michael Lutz, for saying what I feel, better than I could.

“If you shoot him it will skew the results.” – I loved that line! LOL

I agree with Jenny – Three is a dick. I was hoping to like that character, but I don’t. I love all the rest, though. Every story has to have one.

  17. BTW – my husband likens Three to Dr. Smith of “Lost in Space.”

Zobot was speaking and I said, “An android that uses contractions! Cool!”

Why are they still using conventional bullets instead of energy based weapons (phasers) in 2250?

  18. 1. Question Joe – what book is ONE reading? I can’t make it out.

    2. I think we should name the Android ‘Snarkbot’. 🙂

    3. It’s been five days – has anyone taken a shower yet? Do they have deodorant? Soap? Clean underpants? These are very important things to know.

    das

  19. I have to say I am disappointed in Dark Matter. I was hoping, despite all the clues you gave us prior to opening, that it would be more than a bunch of violence and mayhem and macho strutting. I was a huge fan of Stargate and so was optimistic for more thoughtful material. I’m unsubbing. It’s been fun to have a window into your world, but I’m obviously not the target market for this show!

  20. I echo everything Das said. I love this show more and more. I know we guessed on Twitter about what the “antique book” that ONE was reading was, but I don’t think you ever said what it actually was.

Please give Lulu and Bubba a big hug for me! I mean the dogs of course, but you can do the guns too, if you’re into that sort of thing. 🙂

  21. Das said: “3. It’s been five days – has anyone taken a shower yet? Do they have deodorant? Soap? Clean underpants? These are very important things to know.”

I’d LOVE to see a scene several episodes in where THREE announces: “Hey everyone, I finally found the toilet!”

  22. @virginiabruce – Interesting. I respect your opinion, but I find it quite the opposite of mine. I find Dark Matter to be very thoughtful (whereas Killjoys seems more the violence and mayhem sort of show). Space-based sci fi has always had an element of action and macho strutting (Captain Kirk, anyone?), and I don’t find this new show any more violent than those that came before it, including Stargate. In fact, it’s one of the first shows in a long time where I feel the character development is just as important – if not more so – as the overall storyline.

But I realize not everyone has the same experience. It’s just that – compared to the gore I’ve seen in CSI shows, and the ugly brutality of some network nighttime dramas (not to mention shows such as Sons of Anarchy, Breaking Bad, and GoT) – Dark Matter feels like good sci fi tv that’s gone back to its roots, without (so far) resorting to gritty, over-the-top acts of sex and violence to woo those who think a show must be full of shock-value moments in order for it to have any merit.

Of course, now saying that, I’m sure in an upcoming episode someone is going to be graphically beheaded just as they reach climax during a space alien sex orgy. 😛
