THE MONUMENTS MEN

Release Date: February 7, 2014

What it’s about: The true story of a special platoon entrusted with the task of safeguarding art during WWII.

What it’s got working for it: Based on a  true story.  And the trailer looks very promising.

What’s it’s got going against it: These “all star cast” affairs tend to be big, bloated big screen disappointments.

ROBOCOP

Release Date: February 12, 2014

What it’s about: A critically-injured soldier is turned into a cybernetic officer of the law.

What it’s got working for it: Hopefully it’ll be as good as the original with the added bonus of better visual effects.

What’s it’s got going against it: The original was pretty good.  Is this reboot necessary?

POMPEII

What it’s about: A gladiator battles to save the woman he loves against the backdrop of one of history’s greatest natural disasters.

What it’s got working for it: Starring Kit Harrington from Game of Thrones.  He’s good.  Also dazzling visual effects!

NON-STOP

Release Date: February 24, 2014

What it’s about: A U.S. Air Marshal on a transatlantic flight receives a message demanding the U.S. government deposit $150 million dollars in an offshore account.  If not, a passenger will be killed every 20 minutes.

What it’s got working for it: A fascinating premise.  I’d love to see how they pull it off.

What’s it’s got going against it: IF they pull it off.

1This Friday, we begin our Stargate: Atlantis re-watch with the series premiere, Rising I, continuing with an episode a day screening, all the way through to the series finale.  I’ll follow-up each viewing with some (no doubt) fond recollections of the individual episodes and perhaps offer some interesting insights – provided I can actually remember anything.  If you’d like to join our viewing marathon –

Great!  Watch Rising I Friday and then drop by this blog Saturday with something to say.  Loved it?  Hated it?  Have a question?  I’ll do my best to answer your burning questions!

  1. I’m afeared that watching Atlantis again will make me depressed. 🙁 I miss my fair-haired boys* soooo much! (*Term used both literally and figuratively. 😉 )

    das

  2. Argh, and here I am going away for the weekend (hiking in NH) and won’t be back until Monday. I’ll miss the first few episodes but I’ll try to catch up after I’m back.

Finally, at long last, my step-mom is now at the nursing home of her choice as of this afternoon. Whew! What a long haul. Interestingly, despite her anxiousness to get out of the hospital and to the nursing home, she was actually a bit upset and nervous at leaving. I’m sure that it’s just a matter of moving from the known to the unknown and how uncomfortable that can be. She had become very comfortable with the nursing staff and some of the other residents at the hospital. I think she’ll be able to adapt pretty quickly, though.

Tomorrow night, we get the rest of her furniture moved in and then she should be pretty settled.

  3. Oh, c’mon das! Think of all the fun we’ll have! Let’s watch. If it get’s too maddening, we’ll take a break. Okay?

I found all 5 seasons so I’m ready to go. So are we watching Friday or discussing Friday?

  4. Good luck, gforce! I hope all goes smoothly for your stepmom’s move.

Movies: I’m planning to see Monument Men. Looks good. I hope it’s not too depressing.

    Robocop – maybe.

    Non-Stop: nope.

Pompeii: Ooh, Jon Snow being a gladiator? I might have to see that one.

Okay. May I take a moment to vent? I still attend D&D gaming conventions occasionally – to help run a D&D tournament which is in its 35th year. Woohoo! However, I’ve missed that last couple of years and had forgotten how horrendous it was to try to get a room to go to the convention in scenic Indianapolis. There is a single housing site that everyone must use to get a room. Think extremely popular band coming to town and tryin to get a ticket on one of those ticket brokering sites. Then imagine the site randomly failing and then not failing. Telling you it’s sold out then suddenly opening up more spaces then telling you they are sold out again just as you try to enter your credit card info. Then booting you out of the system and forcing you to log in again. Oops, sorry. Now we are completely sold out! Here is the apology that the convention folks sent us today: http://us1.campaign-archive2.com/?u=2f77d2f8c77398c0b064223ba&id=aa5ee70559&e=2f24f5b39d

Maybe the gaming gods are trying to tell me I’m too old for this crap. Thanks,Joe. I feel marginally better. But I’m still very bummed.

Quick! I need some good news. Somebody. Anybody!

  5. Howdy… just back from Mexico. Mostly terrific trip… and then I came down with the flu. Ugh. But at least I got to listen to ocean waves instead of a furnace.

  6. Hey Joe
That Non-Stop might have some merit. May have to look for that one.
Yep, all ready to watch Atlantis.

    Elminster

  7. Monuments Men. A possibility, hope it lives up to the trailer. Robocop. He has a HUMAN hand. You are going to build something called Robocop, then leave it with an obviously human hand? I don’t see this remake going well…Pompeii. I really want to like it, but the trailer is not exciting me, even with John Snow in it, almost naked. Non Stop…trailer looks promising. But Liam is hit and miss with some of his movies (The Grey, anyone?). Still, I give action flicks a little more leeway than other types of movie, and I am in the mood to see people and things smashed…
Planning to rest up tomorrow, then start with the Atlantis viewings. Have to dig up my old ratings of the episodes, and see how they compare to what I think of them now. It will be great seeing what others think as well, not to mention picking your brains for tidbits, trivia, and teases.

  8. Ah, Pompeii, with some kick-ass Canadians: Carrie-Anne Moss, Jessica Lucas, Sasha Roiz, Kiefer Sutherland, Jean-Francois Lachapelle. I am so looking forward to this movie.

Good news for Americans, there are over 100,000 signatures on a petition to the White House to deport/evict Justin Bieber from the U.S: http://www.thestar.com/entertainment/music/2014/01/29/deport_justin_bieber_petition_requires_white_house_response.html Canadians say, No Take-Backs! We got rid of him to you guys fair and square!

  9. I can’t decide what to do about Robocop. I love the original so much I might fly into a fit of rage if the remake is crap. It’s for that reason I still haven’t seen the Total Recall remake.

Non-Stop – Meh. [Mr Movie Voice] “Liam Neeson stars as Liam Neeson doing what Liam Neeson does in every movie he’s in.” I’m thinking Die Hard on a plane.

I have my Atlantis DVDs queued and ready!

  10. Showing on a cable channel here in the UK tonight is the last episode of Atlantis and then tomorrow begins a re-run of SG1 with Children of the Gods …I will be doing my own re-watch of that….I will always choose SG1 if I’m given a the chance..The Original and best imho…

  11. I just got Netflix the other day, and I’m happy to say it’s got Atlantis on it.
    Hurrah!
    ..

Not that I don’t also have the boxset, but. I dunno.. Seems so much work having to pull the boxset out, get a DVD out, slide the DVD into the drive, lunch the DVD player, then faffing about because all your audio settings are set to “Game” mode!
Much easier to just tap Netflix on your iPad, grab the nearest blanket, and get cumfy!

    .. Man, I’m getting lazy…

No commentaries on Netflix, though. Might yet need to go the DVD route for those. I’ve barely watched any of the commentaries on the Atlantis set, even though I’ve watched (and re-watched) most of the SG1 and Universe ones. .. Not really sure why that is.

  12. In my previous comment, I might’ve accidentally suggested that I “Lunch the DVD Player”.. Please don’t think I’m so hungry that I occasionally snack on physical computer hardware, or even bits of software. It was merely a spelling mistake, and should’ve read “Launch the DVD Player”.

    I’m not that hungry!

    .. Maybe.

  13. Oh, I should have read the last line of the blog more carefully. I’ll watch Rising 1 on Friday and be ready to discuss it with the class on Saturday.

  14. As a WWII and history buff, I’m looking forward to Monument Men.

As a fan of Kit Harrington, I’m looking forward to Pompeii.

And REALLY looking forward to April 6th. The season 4 premier of GoT.

  15. @ Tam Dixon – I LOVED the wedding ep, too!! Hilarious!! 😆 Something about the style of these first two episodes (of the new series) reminds me of Hot Fuzz, with the cutaway scenes and all. My only fear after two very entertaining eps is that the third will be intentionally jarring, totally serious and nail-bitingly suspenseful, just because we’re expecting something light.

@ Sparrowhawk – I just don’t have the time to really watch anything more right now. Southern hemi rugby is starting up soon, and so if I get the games again on tv that means 6-7 matches to watch every week. With the handful of tv shows I’m watching, the Westminster Dog Show in Feb, and a couple other things, my tv viewing dance card is pretty much filled up. I remember the eps, though, so can still join in the discussion, which will mostly be me whining about the fate of the Wraith…sort of like a rerun in and of itself. 😛

@ Joey – This was on Colbert the other night and all I could think of, and see, was you:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MB6flvTGKqE

    Pretty close, no? 😉

    das

  16. Please do the under the radar movies next! (You usually find some really interesting ones.)

Forgot to mention yesterday: Loved how Akemi has picked up Abed’s “Coolcoolcool”. What was her reaction to last week’s episode?

    -Mike A.

  17. My TV watching schedule is up in the air next week. (traveling for mom) So I might miss the first few SGA’s but I’ll read Akemi’s reviews for sure! Pray the hospital has Wi-Fi.

Das: Yes, it was lighter this time. Mary is a nice addition too. It was nice seeing the ladies appreciate Sherlock’s gift.

Mike From Canada: I don’t usually like the flash back episodes and it was mismatchy. However, this gave me a glimpse into Sherlock’s character flaws/strengths. I thought the writers tied it up nicely. So few shows surprise me at the end but this one did.

Maybe Robocop and Non-Stop (it reminds me of Airforce One).

JeffW: I hope you can find a good place to eat (do share please). I hate driving in Atlanta on good days! Safe travels!

  18. Watching Silent Hill Revelation you can almost feel sorry for Kit Harrington, I’m sure if he knew the movie would turn out so dreadful he would of rejected the offer to be a lead character in it. I think the movie is a good lesson for any budding director on how not to make a horror movie lol

  19. I like the premise of Non Stop, then again I liked Flight Plan, decent movies based in such closed environments are hard to find these days. I wonder if it’ll have a slow start like Flight Plan? Just a regular plane ride, when things slowly but surely become so very wrong?

  20. Joe, I see that Tara deleted her blog. Next time you talk to her, tell her she is on my shit list. She should have done a farewell entry at the very least….

  21. I shamelessly love airplane disaster movies, even the cheesiest one with Alain Delon. (Airport 79?), so I’m definitely in for Non-Stop. 🙂 Hubby and I are re-watching Eureka, but I’ll have plenty of time to watch Atlantis, too.

  22. @Tam Dixon: Tampa has been cold and rainy, haven’t seen much of it thus far. Food Truck Rally this weekend, should be fun. Taking Michael to a pow wow on Saturday, too, so already a lot more to see and do here. 🙂

  23. The Monuments Men and Non-Stop sound interesting. I think I can skip the others.

  24. I’m currently reading the Monuments Men book. It’s interesting but a tad dry. Of course, the movie looks like it veers from that. I think this is one case where I might like the movie more.

  25. When I saw you wrote this for “Nonstop” …”If not, a passenger will be killed every 20 minutes.” I was thinking that is about what you did on the Stargate series.
