Whew!  Crazy day!  No sooner did I wake up this morning, than I received my first gift of the day:

1Yes, that’s NFL.com telling me that my waiver wire selection of New York Giants receiver Rueben Randle went through!  How’s that for a pleasant birthday surprise?

Then, after feeding the dogs (of course), I went through the many Happy Birthday texts, emails, and blog comments I’d received.  As well as these awesome cards…

First from mom and sis:

First, the back of the card. Sis always claimed she was a better swimmer than me growing up because she was a lifeguard. And didn't mind putting her face in the water.

The card itself is perfectly in keeping with my roguish pirate image.

And, inside, the heartfelt(?) message. The LOL goes back to a story I told her of a former co-worker's wife who used to sign all her emails LOL in the mistaken belief it stood for Lots of Love. "So sorry to hear of your grandfather's passing. LOL, Denise".

I then celebrated with a thirty minute conference call followed by a couple of dogs walks.  Them, it was off to lunch –

A quick stop off at my local comic book shop for this week’s selection (JLA #8. Hawkeye #13, and Rogues Rebellion #1) before heading back home and picking up Bubba for an outing.  A visit to a couple of pet stores and then – gelato!

One scoop of pumpkin pie and one scoop of marron (chestnut) glacee.

Bubba likes gelato too!  Who knew?

Back home, the dogs enjoyed some of the new toys we bought them:

For dinner, my sister made reservations for us at my favorite Japanese restaurant in Vancouver : Minami…

Curiously, my back/hip felt somewhat better after this sake taster.

My Birthday Week festivities continue tomorrow with a visit to the massage therapist, my pass on Paul’s draft of the pitch for that SF series, continued work on my new pilot (15 pages in!) and, as always, quality time with the dogs.  And girlfriend.

Thanks to everyone who took time to post their birthday wishes, pics, and videos. You guys are the best!

  1. Wowzer! That was a great birthday. Thanks for sharing it. Loved the LOL story.

  3. Happy Birthday Joe! Looks like you had an awesome day. I hope you have an awesome year too!

  4. Happy Belly Button Day! Terrific pirate card, including the inside jokes. Great prezzy and card from Akemi, stroll and toy and gelato spree with Bubba. And dinner! Mmmmm, Suuuuuu-shi-ya! Congrats on all the great career news, too.

  5. Whoo! Happy birthday, Joe! I wish I could post gifs here, but just imagine lots of balloons and streamers and applause. 🙂

Also, Akemi is awesome. A third language! Some days, I feel like I can’t even speak english properly.

  6. Happy Birthday, Joe! Wishing you a year filled with much success, happiness, good health and blessings!

  7. Happy Birthday Joe!

Another year older, and best of luck with your script stuff. Considering some of the poor standard of TV that seems to be filtering onto some networks, it’s about time that someone with actual writing talent like you gets a chance 🙂

  8. Happy Birthday! May you never run out of delicious recipes! Today I tried jalapeño Philly cream cheese with the roasted pork and potatoes I baked and it was delicious, but when I was done eating I realized my mouth had gone from happy to en fuego; it was so good I hadn’t noticed I was singing my mouth.

Not sure if you can view this north of the border but PBS had a three hour documentary about superheroes with Stan Lee and many others hosted by buddy Liev “Sabretooth” Schreiber:

  9. Happy Birthday again Joe! Looks like you had a busy and fun day.

I’m impressed with Akemi’s and your sister’s cards, fun and creative!

And that sushi selection for dinner…wow! Was that all for you or did you share?

  10. Sounds like a wonderful day for you! Thanks for sharing it with us, and many more Happy Birthday!!

  11. Happy Natal Day!! Looks like you had a ton of fun and food. I hope this year brings you much happiness, success and good health.

And it sounds like you’ll be busier than heck. Hope all of your new projects work out, and you can finally get back in a studio writer’s room, where you belong. I miss hearing about all the daily adventures you had on Stargate, and can’t wait to hear about all the happenings on a new show.

Good to hear that you’re planning to get an MRI on your back. They’re so much more detailed than an x-ray. But even if you don’t have any significant issues (I hope), and it ends up being muscular, it will be great to have that baseline image as you get older.

I’m scrambling get work done and train a co-worker by Friday. I’m hoping to start my drive up to Vancouver on Sunday for a two week vacation. But my Mom has an infection. If she’s ok by Saturday, I’m hitting the road.

  12. Happy birthday Joe! I wish you many happy and healthy years ahead! And have a kickass day! 🙂

  13. Most excellent Birthday!

    Mmm, tonkatsu. I adore tonkatsu.

Story time! Friends and I had had a few drinks one chilly Saturday afternoon in Yokosuka, then we popped into a little hole in the wall place for supper. I was a bit tipsy when I ordered, and was pretty proud that I no longer needed to point at the models in the window for my meal. I got very puzzled looks when I request “kotatsu”. Oops. My drunken Japanese isn’t all that great, huh?

And the little grooved dish for smunching up sesame seeds, what is that called? I have one in my cupboard and would like to call it something more accurate than “groovy bowl”.

  14. Happy b-day! Sounds like you had a fun day with lots of love (LOL) from family and friends. How is it that the dogs get new toys on your special day? I guess that’s the way it works with pets and kids…

  15. Celebrating again today? Didn’t you start the celebrations like…a week ago? Someone is a very spoiled boy. 🙂 (At first I accidentally typed ‘soiled’ – which may apply, too. 😉 )

  16. Something for you writers; BBC has a pass-along story going on Radio 4, you can submit a 200 word story that forwards the existing story along. You can listen to the first few chapters which are just a few minutes long and then submit your story ideas for the next chapter. Anyone can enter so long as they don’t work for BBC:

    Cheers!

  19. Happy Birthday! Hope you have a great trip to Japan (look forward as always to your trip blogs) and a great year personally and professionally.

  20. Happy Birthday, Joe. Even though we have never met, I think of you as my friend. the other day I was telling someone, “My friend, Joe, goes to Japan every year mainly to eat the local cuisine”. After we discussed the topic of going on vacation just to eat, she asked me how I knew you. Well, I read his blog every night!

  21. HOLD ON!!! You’re excited you got a WR from the Giants?!?! The 0-6 Giants? 😉

    Happy B-day!

  22. Sounds like you had a terrific birthday. I’m so happy you did. I’m shocked Bubba loves gelato (not really, but I thought it’d be funny to say. When are you leaving again? There is some typhoon headed for Japan. A bad one.
