September 24, 2013: Take part in Lawren's Fantasy Pilot Television League!

Well, that was fast. Last year, I lost interest in football about thirteen weeks into the season. This year, only three weeks into fantasy football league play, with my Snow Monkeys off to a disastrous 0-3 start, my enthusiasm has waned. My starters consistently under perform while my bench routinely over performs. Starters who put up huge numbers the previous week disappear or get injured when they’re in my line-up, while disappointments I sit break out. Clearly, the Fates conspire against me. Right about now, my passion for fantasy football falls somewhere between “couldn’t care less” and “don’t give a shit”.

It’s fortuitous then that my buddy, Lawren, has organized an alternate, non-football, fantasy league: a Fantasy Television Pilot League. This was the email Lawren sent my way:

I’ve laid out the list of the network fall pilots of which some have already had their premieres. Feel free to just write Yes or No beside the show whether you think it’ll get a 2nd season or not. Remember this is not based on the quality of the show (clearly) but the insane and sad reality of the world we live and work in. If a show get’s picked up or cancelled (pulling the episodes from their original dates will count as cancellation) your choice will be multiplied two fold. So +1 for a correct choice. -1 for a wrong choice. -2 if you bet against a show that get’s an early pickup. +2 if your correctly choose a show will get cancelled and has it’s airing cut short.

Overall, it looks like a pretty weak season of shows. Wasn’t all that impressed with the Marvel show as it was a pretty hollow plot and characters. Probably will still get renewed for at least a season.

Joe’s list is pretty good. I wouldn’t bet against Chuck Lorre’s Mom either.

In my humble opinion, though I feel one or two may get rescued because they have a strong lead in.

I want in on this! But I need to do a little research first. What’s the deadline?

As for your fantasy woes, I suggest the George Costanza strategy: just Do The Opposite. If Hakim Nicks did fuck-all last week and screwed you, and every ounce of your being is screaming at you to bench him this week, play him. If Jared Cook and a new QB connected like no one expected they would last week, and you want to catch the wave, don’t even try. Bench him this week. Whatever your instinct is, it’s been wrong three weeks running. So, Do The Opposite.

@Joe:

Due to travels, I’ve only been able to take in one episode of one of the shows listed (the second episode of Sleepy Hollow), and unless they improve the storyline, I don’t think that one will be renewed.

My son and I hope to see “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D” next week (I messed up the DVR programming and missed the episode for this week). I’ll reserve judgement until I see it.

For the rest, I’ll see if I can do some research and come up with some predictions on the rest. It may take me a few days though.

@ Ponytail – I wouldn’t be sad about that situation. Hubby and I are trying to wean ourselves off of tv with the hopes of doing away with it altogether. I was remembering how – as a kid – I just *HAD* to watch Dukes of Hazzard, and now I cringe at the very thought of being so into that show. Then I think of all the time I wasted on tv shows in the past that I could care less about today. I guess I shouldn’t be advocating this on a tv producer’s blog, but I really think we waste our time, our talents, and our very lives watching television. The computer isn’t much better. I am trying very hard to limit my time of this thing, too. I am spending far less time online than I did just a couple years ago, but still it’s not enough. I really want to enjoy life before it’s too late…and I’ve already wasted too much time in front of a screen.

And it’s the small things we sometimes miss out on. Just today I sat down on the patio with my lumberjack (yes…I have my own, personal lumberjack… 😉 ), to discuss taking out a dead tree and cutting back some others. I asked if he wanted some habanero peppers, and he said his foreman loves hot stuff so I gave him a few. I told him hubby’s recent hot pepper fiasco, and he started telling stories about pranks he’s pulled, including one involving poison ivy. We had a few laughs – just about 10 minutes of social time. After he left it occurred to me that – with the exception of my husband, sister and mom – he was the first person to sit down at the patio I worked so hard to put in. Why did I work so hard if I wasn’t going to have people over to enjoy it? And why don’t I have people over? Because, at the end of the day when I’m tired, I do the easy thing – I turn on the tv – and by doing so I miss out on some of the finer things in life. I want to change that before I waste whatever life I have left.

Of course, in weaning myself off of ‘screens’, I also have to wean myself off of rugby, something that just isn’t working so well for me right now. 😛

@ Joe – Speaking of rugby, saw this on the rugby forum and thought of you: http://www.therugbyforum.com/showthread.php?31673-2019-World-Cup-Japan-must-be-cancelled

I sure hope you wear lead underpants next time you go to Japan!!

Saw them filming The Tomorrow People & Almost Human on the same day a few Fridays ago in Vancouver…very pleased with myself as, after 8 years & 13 visits to Vancouver, it was the very first time I have EVER seen any filming being done on the streets of that fair city..amazing I know, as at one time it seemed that almost everybody was filming there…

Can’t answer your question though….I’m just grateful when most of it makes it’s way across to these shores…:D….but I’d like to see these two succeed as I feel I have a connection to them…it was like Stargate SG1 – I felt such a connection to it but moreso after meeting some of the stars and visiting what I think is still one of the most amazing sets ever.. 🙂

I had a wonderful time in Vancouver and absolutely the best 30th Wedding Anniversary dinner at Bluewater Cafe and Raw Bar..amazing food, fantastic wine, most attentive staff and a still vibrant and fun crowd..I don’t care what anyone says, it’s still my No.1 and always will be I think..:D

Next year I’m back again, via Seattle, ECCC and other parts of the Western Coast of the US as well as a quick trip up to Tofino where I can eat at the Wick’s brilliant restaurant too..31st Anniversary celebrations? ..any excuse to re-visit my favourite city in the world..

Just got back from a little trip to Sister Bay in Door County, Wisconsin. I ate lots of cherries. 😀 I had no idea there were so many new shows for this sesaon!

I saw rhe first episode of Sleepy Hollow and will watch the second this afternoon. I think it’s a keeper – so far anyway.

Missed Agents of SHIELD this week since I was away and forgot to program the DVR but that’s one I’ll be watching.

The Blacklist looked interesting in previews and I’ll give it a chance.

Dracula? Really? Gotta watch that at least once!

It’s been kind of crazy here. When I notice a show starting, I’ve already missed half of the episode. I’m going to try and watch S.H.I.E.L.D. (DVR’d) and maybe, Ironside. I can’t promise anything though. The one Neilson survey we filled out was pretty much blank (they don’t want internet viewing listed) and they haven’t asked us back.

@ Deni – Keep dodgin’ those bugs!

My back is feeling a tad better – not great, but not like yesterday morning when I couldn’t move at all. Going to try to go into work – let’s see how long I hold out.

As far as the blog being quiet, I have noticed that when Joe (yeah, I’m lookin’ at you, Joey 😉 ) asks common questions that get us involved, the blog goes wild. Favorite foods, favorite pets, favorite places to visit, favorite whatever – we all have something to say. Once the question get too specific we all seem to clam up. For instance, I really have no interest in any of the new shows, with the exception maybe of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (Thank heavens for cut and paste because that’s a hellava lot of periods for one show!)

We gave Sleepy Hollow a try and really liked the two main characters (especially Ichabod), but hated the supernatural theme of the show. Just not our cuppa. I’m tired of a lot of the older shows I watched, too, like Castle and White Collar, and if NCIS doesn’t start getting a bit cheerier I may drop that, too. The only shows I’m really looking forward to are Elementary and Psych, but for the latter the next batch of episodes will be their last. Not sure if I’ll continue to watch Defiance whenever that comes back on – I liked it okay, but not loving any of the characters enough to ‘have to’ watch it, and then there’s the ‘let’s try to be like HBO and have an as-graphic-as-we-can-get-away-with-on-a-non-premium-channel sex scene that does absolutely nothing to advance the story but supposedly plays well with hormonal young men and middle-aged spinsters who sit up late at night writing slash fic and fighting with other middle-aged spinsters on discussion forums’.

So, in other words, when it comes to tv I’ve become a bit cynical, perhaps even jaded. There are a few bright spots, but even those are fading. I’ve sort of turned into the same person I was as a teenager – obsessed with a sport (back then it was hockey, now rugby), and watching just one or two favorite shows that somehow manage to grab my attention. I really am not a tv person, I suppose.

Huh. Seems like I had something to say afterall. 😉

They released the Tuesday final ratings and it’s not looking good for some shows.

Shield, Goldbergs did fantastically.
Trophy Wife did okay
Dads, Brooklyn Nine Nine dropping.
Lucky 7 – Dead on Arrival

I expected this, though I feel some other shows may end up being canceled in May if only because they’l end up doing poorly/average on the network in due course and the network will have something better they went to premiere for the next tv season.

I think one of these comedies will be switched with Raising Hope in due course, my moneys on The Mindy Project.

Brooklyn Nine Nine might be suffering from its potential fan base knowing how to avoid commercials (and TV). Maybe if Lawren’s idea catches on, more of its fan base will look up the trailer. Hey, what if Lawren just single-handedly saved network television?

@DP Fox has definitely considered social media and DVR Live+Same Day (and +7) in their decisions on whether to cancel or keep a show. Fringe is a prime example. The ratings kept tanking, but they knew the loyalty of the fan base. I think they also saw the future potential of a fan base that passionate who will support other shows down the line, like Sleepy Hollow, and like Wyman’s Almost Human (Wyman being one of the people from Fringe). I’m not a paid spokesperson of Fox Broadcasting. When I blog about their shows I am free to not say something uncomplimentary. They want honest feedback from me and the other people in the program which is refreshing given that some sites I know insist people blow sunshine up a network’s butt because they are afraid if they say anything uncomplimentary they will be cut off from access. I just seem to like a lot of the programming they have. I think The Tomorrow People will be renewed because Stephen Amell’s brother (Stephen Amell from Arrow) is on it and Arrow is hugely popular. They aren’t looking for huge ratings anyway. I’ve seen the pilot of Enlisted. It’s funny. Has a very Stripes-feel to it. But they pushed it off until January and I really think it is a good move strategically. Too many shows to compete with right now. If Dads does not do well, they might be looking for a replacement. They have a lot of great shows coming in January–Rake, Us Versus Them (the chick from Gilmore Girls is in that), Surviving Jack. Then “24” is back in June. Fox even let “Touch” have a partial second season even though their ratings were tumbling out of control by the end of season 1. Season 2 was much better but they could not recover from the bad press and people turning the show off, not willing to try it for the second season. They have a genuine problem with the XFactor; The Voice is killing them (and they outranked Idol this year, too). Despite the downturn in ratings, it is still a money maker for them. Not sure how this year will turn out, but I would not be surprised if this is Idol’s last year. Just my two cents.

Oops forgot to mention, I’m with you on the fantasy football thing, narrowly won my 3rd game by 3 points to go to 1-2. Nothing like being at the bottom 3 weeks in a row to start the season 🙁 But yeah my fellow players are mostly stuck in the same scenario, players do well on bench but suck on starting lineup especially WRs and RBs. There have been only 2 crazy high scores of 173 in a 2 QB league of 8 teams(so we basically all have big name players), most of the rest of the scores have been around 80-110, with a couple ties.

Hopefully things settle down for the rest of the season.

Wow the networks have been busy but will they be successful?? Of all those shows, I have only heard about maybe 1/2 dozen of them, 2 of which I have seen, one was tonight – “Back in the Game” only because it came on after the “Middle” and well Jame Caan. Meh – I dunno, not DVR worthy. The other “Sleepy Hollow” – pretty cool, liking it let’s see where that goes.

I can’t keep up with the networks or movies. We are in the process of cutting out cable and not watching much, made the cut upstairs in the bedroom and as soon as we can figure out how to watch sports… well bye bye cable! Between cutting back on the cable and making some adjustments on the cell phone bill, we put $50.00 a month back in our pockets. It’s dinner out or pizza and a movie, or 3 Olives or shoes…

ABC
Super Fun Night (comedy) ANSWER: No
The Goldbergs (comedy) ANSWER: No
Back in the Game (comedy) ANSWER: No (although I like James Caan’s character a lot, and that of the British “best friend”)
Trophy Wife (comedy) ANSWER: Yes
Lucky 7 (drama) ANSWER: No
Betrayal (drama) ANSWER: No (too soap opera-y sounding)
Once Upon a Time in Wonderland (drama) ANSWER: No (looks weird as hell)
Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (drama) ANSWER: Yes (Fucking awesome pilot! If this gets canned it’ll be because it’s fucking expensive as hell to produce.)

CBS
Intelligence (drama) ANSWER: No
Hostages (drama) ANSWER: No (Even if it’s good, I can’t see the premise justifying a second season.)
The Crazy Ones (comedy) ANSWER: Yes (Originally I said “no” to this, but it’s David E. Kelley, and his clout might buy him enough time for this show to find its legs. The pilot scene where Robin Williams and one of his team pitch their idea to Kelly Clarkson is priceless. I highly recommend finding it online.)
The Millers (comedy) ANSWER: No
Mom (comedy) ANSWER: No
We Are Men (comedy) ANSWER: No

NBC
The Michael J. Fox Show (comedy) ANSWER: No (too much “heart”, not enough funny)
Sean Saves the World (comedy) ANSWER: No
Ironside (drama) ANSWER: No (although I’m interested, I don’t think anyone else will be)
The Blacklist (drama) ANSWER: Yes
Welcome to the Family (comedy) ANSWER: No
Dracula (drama) ANSWER: No (I think the target demo will be distracted by Sleepy Hollow.)

FOX
Dads (comedy) ANSWER: No (Awful. Really, truly awful.)
Almost Human (drama) ANSWER: No (due to Fox’s history of cancelling scifi shows with good buzz)
Sleepy Hollow (drama) ANSWER: Yes (This show is actually good, IMO, and has been getting Facebook mentions among my friends and their friends.)
Enlisted (comedy) ANSWER: No (boring premise; no known names)
Brooklyn Nine-Nine (comedy) ANSWER: Yes
Junior MasterChef (unscripted) ANSWER: Yes

CW
The Originals (drama) ANSWER: Yes (b/c it’s a spin-off of Vampire Diaries, which has made it 4 seasons already.)
The Tomorrow People (drama) ANSWER: No
Reign (drama) ANSWER: Hell no.
