Well, darn it.  Because April 1st has fallen on a production holiday, I find myself traveling to Montreal rather than being back at the office, pulling off some elaborate practical joke on Ashleigh, our Exec. Producer’s Assisstant (see last year’s hilarity: http://josephmallozzi.com/2009/04/01/april-1-2009-theodore-wilsons-last-ride/).  Apparently, Ashleigh was equally disappointed as she informed me that she’d planned on “getting me” with an equally marvelous practical joke, Machiavellian in its plotting, joyously wicked in execution, that would have ultimately culminated in my demise.  I wondered aloud whether that might have been taking it too far.  She vehemently disagreed.  And when I asked her what, exactly, it was she’d planned, Ashleigh refused to tell me on the grounds that she might just go ahead and spring it on me anyway…when I least expect it!  Ominous, no?

So there you have it.  No practical jokes on this day.  Instead, an early blog entry and a real treat compliments of Scott Stofer (armed and dangerous in the following pics and vids) and the rest of the Special Effects gang as they test some “equipment” for a future episode.  By the way, if you missed Scott’s Q&A on this blog, check it out here ( http://josephmallozzi.com/2008/11/22/november-22-2008-special-effects-master-scott-stofer-answers-your-questions/).

Scott fires it up!

Ah, well.  So much for Carl’s van.

This must be the best job in the world, burning and blowing stuff up all day!

Thanks to Scott for the blog fodder!

Stargate: Universe returns tomorrow night with an all new episode!  Tell your friends!  And tell them to tell their friends!

  1. Poor Carl. Did that license plate bracket say….my other vehicle is a scooter?

Love a good flame thrower. Nice pics, thanks.

  2. ok, for the videos and pics you’re forgiven for posting before I even read the last day’s post. Have a safe and funfilled trip.

  3. I was hoping you’d have some elaborately planned jokes up your sleeve for today. Alas, apparently not this time. Hopefully Ashleigh springs something on you in the near future which leads to an all out practical joke war (purely for entertainment purposes of course).

    Have fun in Montreal.

    Cheers,

    Amy/Amz

  4. Greetings Joe,
You’re probably in flight now to Montreal. Hope it’s a safe one! Hi to your sis and mom.

Question: finished a book a while ago and in the story the 12 year old girl watched Stargate:SG1 to “escape reality” for a while. Are there any permission issues with using the Stargate name in books, tv shows or movies? I know it was also mentioned in Big Bang Theory as well. Great show by the way. Just curious.

@ Chev: Took the 80’s lyric test. Ended up 49.8. Not as easy as I thought it would be. Didn’t even try the 90’s version!

@ Das & Mr. Das: Congrats on your 20 years! Quite the milestone.

@ Deni: So sorry for your loss. It’s tough, I too have been through it. Prayers and happy thoughts headed your way.

Looking forward to SPACE tomorrow. Welcome back SGU!

    Happy Easter to all!

  5. Looks like Greer’s going to get the chance to play with his favorite toy again. 😀

  6. Makes me want to hold out a sausage on a LOOOONG stick.

    BTW, I love Gmail’s vowel outage 🙂
Yeah, you’re Yahoo, but you should take a look.

Oh, and the seach time on Gmail? Not 2 seconds. Oh no, not on April 1st. 🙂
Results 1 – 10 of about 559,000 for Mad Canadians. (at warp 9.57)

I was looking for you.. You will be pleased to know that when it comes to Mad Canadians you are not on page 1.

  7. Very cool videos…but I was really disappointed that a “how to” guide wasn’t included so I could build one for………educational purposes, lol.

  8. Scott would be a big hit at Burning Man. My friend has an art car with a ten foot flame shooting penis on it, more “flame effects” are always desirable. We have to call them flame effects, not flame throwers, or the gubbermint gets edgy. Hmmm, there are a lot of burners in Vancouver …. I wonder how many burners work at the studio? There must be some!

  9. Gotta agree with others…. BIGGEEEEEERRRRRRR!!! hehehe

@ Nate – just pose a question here and Joe will either answer or not. 😀

  10. Oh man, if I had one of those I would be running around screaming “I’m a dragon! I’m a dragon!” at the top of my lungs.

Prolly a good thing I don’t have one.

  11. So – they are going to a planet with a car park and they are going to torch all the bad guy’s cars.

Hope Aspen didn’t get indigestion – he looks a picture of innocence surrounded by the fluffy bits of his prey.

Say hello to all the family, esp. Felix, Baby cat and sis’s hounds.

  12. Personally I hope the ratings hold for ep 11, they should, pretty much anything you write turns out awesome Joe, be it SG1, SGA, etc

  13. Congrats to Das and Mr Das on twenty years!
    Here’s to twenty more

Evil Ashleigh is fun, fun, fun!
    flamethrowers, yay

  14. So guys, like it hasn’t been enough lately, poor Elway spent the entire day at the hospital with a high fever, lethargy and lack of appetite. That’s it, no cough, no diarrhea or vomiting, nothing, nada, zip. So, $800 worth of tests later and we still have no idea what’s going on. He’s at the ER for the night as per vet’s instructions, still on fluids and IV antibiotics, and we’ll see how he is by morning. Hopefully, we’ll have some test results back by then and will be able to treat whatever is going on. So, the house is very quiet with just the two little Cockers, but I think I’ll take advantage of the situation and get to bed with my huge headache, some flannel pjs and a cuppa tea. This sucks. Have a good night, everyone!

  15. @Deni sorry to hear about your problems with your furry family. No doubt Elway is also a bit off colour due to missing his pal Flannery. I hope that the vet hospital can make Elway feel better soon.

    Life is sometimes very cruel.

  16. Looking forward to the return of SGU!

    Quick 2 questions…

    1. What’s your favorite sushi?

    2. Spelling question: Lantian or Lantean?

    Thanks! 🙂

    Sean

  17. Give mom & sis hugs from us! 🙂

    @ Deni – Geez…you guys just can’t catch a break, can you?? Wishing you the best…and Elway, too. And Mr. Deni. And the Cockers. Hang in there, and I’ll keep you in my thoughts and prayers. {{hugs}}

    das

  18. That location looked REALLY familiar! Did they shoot Enemy Mine there? And possibly several other episodes as well? 😀

  19. Does Stargate Universe have any sponsors for product placement such as Apple and Coke? I am asking because Eli has an iPhone that he carries around and I saw him drinking coke in the episode where he goes home. I don’t remember the other Stargate installments having product placement. I love it!

  20. a flame thrower ! that and the sword, a must have 😀
sorry about advertisement for this friday’s episode, not in my field!

  21. those 3 months have passed really fast. Have a big important day tomorrow. Will not see the episode until saturday if I’m lucky.
Preparing for my 2 important meetings of next week. Hopefully will get something very positive out of each one of them.
    I feel like I ‘m playing a game of chess 8)

  22. I am all set for #SGU (oh my gosh, look what I did, I’m using Twitter hashtags on the blog). I’ve got a second Twitter account set up in case I go to Twitter jail for exceeding the 100 per hour / 1000 per day limit. Anybody want to follow the group of us, you can follow PBMom on Twitter (and you’ll see the others from there) or just do a search for SGU during air time and you’ll see how many of us are talking about it.

@Deni: I wish this wasn’t happening to you. Poor Elway. I hope they find something soon. My heart goes out to you all.

@Joel: That was my first thought exactly: Greer has built a bigger flamethrower.

Hope your flight was a good one, Joe, and you are settling in. Make sure you get that laptop back (and the script and anything else you think has been missing lately).

  23. Where’s the marshmallows????

Happy Easter Joe, MamaMallozzi, Fondy and pugkids.. may you get stuck into your dark dark rich chocolate with great joy.

  24. That’s hot.

Anyways, enjoy your vacation, Joe! Meanwhile, we’ll all be enjoying “Space”! Wooo! Less than 17 hours left for me. I can’t wait!!

@ Das and Mr. Das: Congratulations to both of you!! Wow, 20 years. That’s pretty Awesome. Here’s to 20, no, 40 more years!! See, I doubled it, making it twice as good. 😉

  25. @ Deni: I am so sorry for your loss. May Flannery rest in peace, and may you remember all the good times you have spent with her, and let that bring you comfort instead of sadness. She has lived a long and happy life thanks to you and your family. Let that bring you comfort as well. 🙂

  26. Hi Joe…had a crap day…hope your day was better….even if it was sans practical jokes (although I thought you’d ring someone up early and say they had to be back in the studio to reshoot something or take care of some drama….I think you lacked imagination).

    Some random questions:

Did you find a book to read?
How’s your mom? So glad you get to visit over the holidays. Make sure she rests or is that impossible?
What’s Sis up to? Has she recovered from Hurricane Aspen?
What are all of the animals up to?
What was the weirdest thing you saw at the airport?
Are you pacing yourself with the food this time….(was it last time you were a bit queasy from overindulging)?
What did everyone say about your haircut? Did they notice?
    What’s the weather like?
How do you celebrate Easter? (that questions for everyone on this blog)
Will you please wait a week to discuss Space once I’ve seen it?

    That’s all for now.

    Cheers, Chev

  27. Oops…one more…Joe, is that area that Scott is playing with the flamethrower the same area that Carter went up against the supersoldier in Death Knell?

    Cheers, Chev

  28. @Patty O – yeah I thought I’d perform better….sometimes I knew the song I’d just get stuck on a couple of words and they were usually the ones blanked out…do you every watch “Don’t forget the lyrics”?

    Cheers, Chev

  29. Can’t remember if I sent my best wishes to Das & Mr Das…so this may be a repeat….Happy anniversary Das & Mr Das. Hope you got spoilt Das.

    Cheers, Chev

  30. Hello Joe.

Congrats to Das and Mr. Das.

Sorry to hear that you couldn’t go to war w/ Ashleigh yesterday. There’s always next year. Best wishes on a safe trip.

    Sincerely,

    Bryan.

  31. @Patty O, susan the tartan turtle, Das, PBMom and shiningwit: Thanks so much, y’all 🙂 Picked Elway up from the ER early this morning but he will have to spend the day at the vet’s office again. He seemed a bit more himself, but at this point, they will be keeping him on IV fluids and wide-spectrum antibiotics. Still no test results, arrgghhh! I miss him terribly! Other than his epilepsy, this is the first time he’s ever been sick, so it’s been tough to digest when it happens out of nowhere. At this point, I’m just hoping they’ll figure something out before the weekend and treat him accordingly. He definitely did NOT want to stay there today – broke my heart to have to walk away.

To top off my lousy month, I got stopped on my way home from the vet’s office yesterday afternoon and got two traffic tickets. I’ve NEVER had a ticket in my life! The worst thing is that the cop was wrong and he knew it (I know, they all say that, right?), then took 45 minutes to find something to charge me with after he realized he’d f**cked up. Makes me think I need a film crew following me around all day (every day) just to prove my innocence! I suppose it didn’t help my case when he had me sign the tickets and I started LMAO at his spelling/grammar. No, really, I tried to contain myself, but “accross”, “yeild” and “violeted”? When did spelling become so unimportant that even this town’s finest can’t handle a simple sentence?

Again, I can’t tell you how much your kind words and thoughts have helped us through Flannery’s passing. This house, nay, the world, is missing an angel 🙂

  32. Coucou Joseph!!!

Reposez vous bien à Montréal 🙂

    Merci beaucoup pour ces photos!!

    Enormes bisou!!
    Je vous adore♥

  33. http://dispatchesfromtheisland.blogspot.com/2010/03/dining-in-dark.html

This is from Jorge Garcia’s blog (Hurley on LOST) – made me think of you….

    Waiting for tonight’s episode.

It’s been a tough 2 weeks. Got a call last Sunday that Dad had a major heart attack, may not make it through the night. He was in Corpus Christi, TX. I live in CT. As oldest, I am next of kin….Well we made it down there, touch and go for several days. He made a miraculous (doctor’s words) recovery and was released on Wednesday….

  34. I found another delectable dining destination for you to experience on your CART (Culinary American Road Trip). I met friends for dinner last night in Dallas’ West End in downtown. I live a mere mile or two from there but have never been that I can remember.

After parking next to the Texas School Book Depository, seeing the grassy knoll and the white X in the street where the evil deed was done, we moseyed around looking for a place to take our two out-of-towners. We ended up at a place called the Y.O. Ranch Steakhouse http://www.YORanchSteakhouse.com.

I enjoyed a house salad, the mixed grill (consisting of buffalo filet mignon-to die for, sweet and spicy quail, and an elk chop), gouda mac & cheese, and steamed broccoli. Damn tasty, especially that buffalo filet cooked at medium rare, of course. We all shared the sides and ordered the Creme Brule’ and a slice of Jack Daniels Chocolate Pecan Pie to share for dessert.

The service was friendly, though a bit overattentive, as the restaurant wasn’t busy when we first arrived. Our elderly yet gracious waiter had ready comments for any topic we were discussing, so the others challenged me to think of a conversation topic that would result in his not joining in. And so, the next time the waiter stopped by to check on us, I preempted our discussion of women’s slips getting caught in escalators by declaring, “So, that’s how I feel about capital punishment!” Ahhh, victory at last!

Add this to your list, good sir. You can then go across the street to buy yourself an authentic cowboy hat and pair of fancy boots (the better to kick Carl Binder with in a rage!). And won’t Ashleigh be jealous of your hat? Probably so much so that she’d steal it off your desk, I mean borrow it.

  35. Deni: your luck has to turn for good soon! Support care (IV fluids, etc) can do a lot of good if it’s a short term bug. I hope Elway is better soon. It’s going to be a big adjustment for him at home, poor guy. He will need lots of extra attention. Which I’m sure he will get 😉 .

I certainly love the police but sometimes…. A big deal here was the new Memphis Sergeant’s Exam and how easy it was. Because of “racial and gender discrimination” lawsuits they made the test passable to imbeciles (Me, for example 😀 ) Check it out:

  36. Hi Joe!

    Fire! Fire! Awesome! 🙂

    —-

@ DeniMy condolences on Flannery’s passing. 🙁 Such a cute dog. I hope Elway is feeling better!!!

  37. Holy poop.

I just watched the passion of the Christ. It’s a brutal movie. I’m supprised I remained dry eyed through the whole thing. I still had that pit in my stomach. I’m like I’m a phased contemplative state. It’s weird. I hope I’ll be better by tonight so I can watch Joe’s baby, Space. 🙂

It’s a great movie though, even if you not a Christian you can still enjoy it.

Less than 6 hours till Space!!!!!!!! Yay!!!!

  38. So lookin’ forward to the return of SG:U tonight, I’m even blowing off my friends to stay home. Kinda pathetic, actually :). Best wishes to your Mom for a speedy recovery.

  39. Hey, Joey…

With the crew cut off from the real world and all, can’t some of the guys in Universe grow their hair a bit longer? I’m just watching SyFy today, and I’m really kinda missing the long locks of Ronon and the Wraith. Sure, sure…Rush has a wild mop, but I’m hoping for something a bit more rock n’ rolly. 🙂

    das

  40. That Ryan Kennedy fella is pretty cute…buuuuut, I don’t like this episode…so…gonna watch the news!
