AMALGAVERSE

[An away team made up of Colonel Jack O’Neill, Dr. Daniel Jackson, the android/AI Rommie, and Dr. Rodney McKay has been dispatched to investigate a seemingly derelict freighter.  On board, they discover a service android named Maia who requests permission to interface with Rommie in order to confirm the team’s peaceful intent.]

The team is split on Maia’s request, but leaning toward allowing it. But, in the end, the decision isn’t theirs to make as a group. O’Neill turns: “Rommie, it’s your call.”

Rommie holds Maia’s gaze and doesn’t hesitate. “Let’s do it.”

Maia steps forward and the two androids lock eyes. Rommie compartmentalizes and walls off her memory stores, then lowers the rest of her defenses. A beat, and she feels the scan: a delicate pass over the open data, read-only. It lasts only seconds before the connection breaks.

Maia blinks, then smiles. “Thank you.” She turns to the others.

She tells them that she was in the middle of a scheduled charge cycle when the ship suddenly dropped out of FTL. Given that she has only now come back online, her time off-line has left her memory stores incomplete. What she does know she has assembled in the last few moments, through her neural link to the ship and a perusal of the automated incident report. The report tells her this much. The Waldorf Astoria suffered sudden and catastrophic failures throughout the ship after contact with an atemporal force during FTL transit. Sometime after, an entity of unknown origin gained access to the freighter.

Maia offers a trade. She will lead them to the bridge and give them access to ship-wide systems, enough to restore the freighter to full structural and operational integrity. In return, she asks for their help in purging the ship of the intruder.  As you consider her offer, she produces a weapon, charges it, and heads for the exit.

Do you agree to the deal?

You and 19 others have been stranded in an amalgam universe of myriad SF realities. All 19 are sci-fi’s Best of the Best. And then there’s you, uniquely qualified given your encyclopedic knowledge garnered from your world where these characters, their technologies, and their stories are fiction, beloved TV shows you have watched time and again. Together, all 20 of you have set off on the Enterprise-D, tasked with finding a way home.

For your first mission, you’ve decided to investigate a seemingly derelict freighter broadcasting an emergency beacon. An away team and puddle jumper have been dispatched to the ghost ship, anomalous energy pulses making beaming and communications a challenge.

After parking and cloaking the puddle jumper in the freighter’s hangar, the team crosses the airless bay into the ship proper. There, they make the decision to check out the waning energy signature of a containment field en route to the bridge. But they immediately encounter a utility unit that advances on them menacingly. Rommie connects to it and relays a shut down command that causes the robot to collapse.

Further along, they encounter a sealed door and Rommie informs them that the compartment beyond is exposed to space. She suggests locking down their current section and then unsealing the door since it’s the most direct route to the bridge – and that ebbing containment field. They do so. The door slide open to reveal an immense hull breach complicating their progress. Rommie leaps over the chasm and secures a tether to the other side, allowing the rest of the team to pull themselves over. But when they attempt to open the door to the next section, they hit an impasse. The door remain locked and will not respond to their commands.

O’Neill blows the lock with C4, allowing them entry into the adjoining compartment where they discover an android in a containment field, completing its regenerative cycle. When the android awakens, it informs them it is the caretaker of this freighter, the Waldorf Astoria, and warns them off pillaging its contents.  Daniel assures the android, Maia, that they harbor no ill intent and ask for her assistance in accessing the bridge and restoring ship’s systems.  But Maia remains suspicious.  She requests a peer-to-peer interface with Rommie to confirm that your presence on the freighter is, in fact, benign.

  1. Well, yes, of course you follow the armed android. Wouldn’t be much of a story otherwise.

The next question: Does the entire team roll their eyes or just McKay?

(You have sucked me in, Joe.)

      I knew I would.

  2. Phew. It worked out OK. Good work with the finger-crossing, everyone.

This is still a rescue and fact-finding mission answering a distress call. So now that the team has the support of the ship’s AI, I think they should go with her to the bridge. We may or may not have the capability to help with the intruders, but having the ship’s systems back online should make it much easier to escape if necessary.

The sounds from the walls are still a big worry, although we don’t know for sure it’s replicators. Given the make-up of our away team, it’s understandable we would suspect that. But it might just be a few tribbles. Then again, given which universe we now understand this ship is from, there is something else very bad that has been known to come through a spatial anomaly – if that’s what’s happening here, we will need to find a way to close that hole urgently.

I’m going with “Yes” on this one.

  3. Other than producing a weapon out of nowhere, Maia seems very willing to help them get to the bridge and secure the ship. Which is the primary mission.
News of an intruder is troubling, time to go on high alert.
Proceed to the bridge with Maia, ever vigilant and cautious.

    Sharky is awesome as always.

Waldorf Astoria ha! Oh Joe made me chuckle. Hmm I knew that the android should have been left well alone. I’d say yes but then immediately try to disable it

  5. Well, yeah this is where the story goes. This is how the adventure advances. And Maia’s request seems reasonable but…

    The droid changed the deal.
These are not the terms Maia proposed seconds before.

Maia said first, “[…] Allow me to interface with your colleague so that I can confirm what you have told me. Do that, and I will help you access the bridge and ship’s systems.”

Now after retrieving who knows what from Rommie’s mind, she’s pulled a bait-and-switch with an assumptive closing pitch. In seconds the deal went from just agree to let her interface with Rommie to help us gain access to ship systems to now we did what she wants so now she wants a whole lot more.

    I’d go with “No.”.

This duplicitous droid should be reminded of the terms it itself just proposed seconds ago, and that we already fulfilled our side of the bargain.”

I say yes, follow the android

  7. Atemporal forces are the worst. I blame one for my recurring lower back pain. Anyway, of course they should follow her. Adventure awaits!

  8. Yes, but ever vigilant!

  9. Yes
