The Crime Binge is in full swing with eight more shows! Here’s how I rank them…
S TIER
Mocro Maffia season 6 – Myriad colorful characters, shifting alliances, crosses, double-crosses, triple-crosses, and countless surprises. One of the most epic crime shows of all time.
B TIER
Crooks season 2 – Much of this show is carried by Christoph F. Krutzler’s larger-than-life portrayal of the ebullient Joseph Muckstein and the first six episodes of the show’s second season are an appropriately frenzied compliment in its sheer over-the-top lunacy, but things get a little more staid and a little less fun when the action shifts from Bangkok to Vienna in the final two episodes.
Dogs of Berlin – I loved the premise of the degenerate gambler-detective exploiting a powder keg case to bet himself out of debt, and I also loved the show’s various twists and turns and its dog recurring motif, but the story ultimately loses its way in the end, leaning too heavily into cliche character turns.
D TIER
All Her Fault – More or less the plot of The Stolen Girl, but less well executed. Packed full of extraneous side plots that culminate in a lot of Who Cares?
The Beast Inside Me – Claire Danes delivers the most annoying over-wrought performance of her career in this pretty predictable domestic thriller with a healthy heaping of bland side drama.
Black Rabbit – A plot propelled by bad decisions. Great performances but really a lesson in what can happen if you stretch what should be a movie into an eight episode miniseries.
DNF (Did Not Finish)
The Lowdown – The Ethan Hawke character is annoyingly smarmy. Oh, boy, skinheads. Here we go again.
Queen Mantis – What seems a not-so-great remake of a French series that really wasn’t that great. The Korean predilection for the maudlin and the melodramatic had me tapping out early.
