Slowly getting back into the Toronto swing of things. Spent the weekend writing, organizing my tax documents, sorting mail, and responding to emails. Today, the writers’ room resumed (via zoom for me). At some point, I need to make a few tweaks to a pilot and an overview, and start talking to other writes/directors about another project.
But FIRST, it would be great to resume the CRIME BINGE. Last I checked, I was 790 series in and am looking forward to discovering some new shows – as well as catching up with some old ones. Here are the ones currently on my radar –
Which one should I start with?
And if you have any recommendations for recent crime shows (mystery, suspense, thrillers, mob, etc.), fire away.
I’m curious if any of you subscribe to any substacks/newsletters and wondering what you consider a fair price. I, for instance, subscribe to six finance-related substack newsletters, on both monthly and annual plans and also do subscribe to a couple of X creators (again, finance-related).
Thoughts?

The first season of Deadloch was filmed in my home state so I would be remis if I didn’t recommend it . . . even though I found the humour quite “cringe” and dropped it after a couple of episodes. Definitely exaggerating their Australian-ness for the international audience. We’re not really like that!
I don’t subscribe to any Substacks. I subscribe to a ton of Podcasts. My queue has over 200 hours to listen to!
Recent crime shows on ABC/Hulu.

Thanks, but not a huge fan of network shows. Still, thought High Potential okay but preferred the original French version.
Is the original version available subbed or dubbed?
I watched it subbed.
I’m also a fan of High Potential and welcome home Joe and family!
Deadloch was full of good twists and turns. It has a great cast of characters. The constant arguing/yelling got on my nerves some but it was a worthwhile watch.
I’d be happy to hear any recommendations about the other shows. I have a lot of free time right now.
Hole is worth a go for sure. LA was wonderful. Did you make it to Eggslut?
I did not.
Just an FYI, Audible is having a big sale. Those Murderbot audibles are excellent for trips. The narrator is excellent! Are you still planning on a UK work adventure? Those books will make the flights go faster.
The production will be shooting in London, but I will not be on set.
I quite enjoyed Under Salt Marsh.
Btw. Joe do you know if the post production (editorial) will be done in London as well? If yes, then I’d be very interested in working on the show as a first assistant editor.
Hi, Andreas. I believe post will be done in Los Angeles.
Thank you Joe.
I’d be surprised if there wasn’t an editorial presence in London during the shoot. I contacted Kate at Safehouse Pictures. Let’s see what she’ll say.
It would be great to talk more.
How to Get To Heaven From Belfast got twistier and wilder as it went along, it has so many interesting characters in it and beautiful moments.
I love spine tingly nordic mysteries like Cassandra, Murder at the Top Of the World, Elves and Hotel Beau Sejour but I couldn’t get into Detective Mole, it looks good but I’m bone weary of procedurals.
