Well, I made it back home. But barely!
Although I was up all night the day of my flight, I was feeling b better in the morning. The nausea was gone and while I didn’t have much of an appetite, I was able to consume a third of a plan white rice onigi as well as a couple of bottles of Pocari Sweat that my wife had picked up for me. On the advice of Dr. Grok and my buddy Ivon, Akemi picked up a medley of Asian meds that would hopefully quell my stomach for the duration of our flight.
I was pretty worried as we checked out of the hotel and headed to the airport. Even more worried when we received notice that Toronto had been hit by a snowstorm that could delay our flight but, fortunately, we departed as scheduled (although I heard the next day’s flight was delayed by 4 hours).
My appetite slowly returning, I managed a few bites of airline rubber chicken and a few leafs of lettuce, but didn’t want to hazard any further. As it turned out, those Asian meds worked. At first. And then not so much. The flight was, in a word, “hell”.
I kept dozing off and waking up (which helped). At one point, I woke up, checked the time on my phone, and saw that we were an hour from landing. I couldn’t fall back asleep, I just kept checking the time, agonizing, watching the time tick down. It was the longest 30-some minutes of my life…at which point my phone updated to local time and I realized we still had another 3 hours to go.
I finished the first Asian meds that Ivon recommended, that tried another one that, well, smells (and frankly tasted) like it had once been used in ancient Chinese households to dissuade moths and evil spirits. I had to swallow there of these tiny black pearls that, our friend Dr. Blackjack assured me, contains all natural herbal ingredients.
Anyway, finally landed in Toronto. The plane taxied for another twenty minutes before we were permitted to disembark. Then we had to wait 30 MINUTES for our luggage! We caught a cab home and, I’ve got to tell you, I have never been so happy to be back. After doing some unpacking, we caught an uber and picked up Sharky who was well taken care of by his home-stay family – yet clearly happy to see us, but mostly Akemi.
Speaking of Akemi, she has been mostly unaffected by whatever felled me, although she does admit to feeling some limited stomach upset. But so far, fortunately, it hasn’t hit her as hard as it hit me.
Last night, I had my first uninterrupted night’s sleep in a few days (although I wake up at 5:00 a.m. due to the time change – to find Akemi already up). I had some miso soup, some Power Ade, and a teaspoon of manuka honey. I’ll be taking it easy today…and then tomorrow I’m off to Montreal for a week.

I’m sooo glad you’re feeling better Joe and hopefully Akemi won’t get any worse xxx Is 30 minutes a long time waiting for your luggage as that sounds quite quick to me compared to my experiences coming back home to England… unless I’m unlucky! I’m sure that Sharky loves you really xxx
You’re still sick? You usually bounce back so fast. Do you think it might be contagious? Akemi’s childhood of sweet potatoes, tofu and seaweed might have protected her from this illness.
I hope you’re feeling better tomorrow. Safe travels and please say Hi to your mom!
Das: You’re right about culling out her clothes while she’s in the hospital. I was working on the bathroom and cleaning this time. While she’s home, I will try and work on the kitchen hoard. Mom hoards food but she’s not very mobile now, so I can “probably” purge at will.
Plus, her pots/pans are literally, thrown in the cabinet. I’ve cleaned/organized the pots/pans before but she is undoes any organization plan by shoving them back in. It’s like a sitcom. You open the cabinet door and catch whatever falls out. That’s why I don’t stay over night. My OCD is set on fire there.
Oh, you’re doing the two pilots, too! I like both of them, but especially Prescription Murder. What sticks in my mind the most about Ransom is the set decor…lol. I especially would like to hear your thoughts on it. 🙂

Very glad to hear you made it home safely and are both on the mend And hope your mom is doing okay when you get there. Hi and warmest hugs to Mama Angela from one of her biggest fans. Xo
Wasn’t all that surprised when you announced your misery. Seems, just as it has become tradition to visit your friend at Bar Goya while in Tokyo, so has – at least one thing not going according to plan. Albeit, you two do seem to have thoroughly enjoyed yourselves for the most on this visit and brought home some lovely things. I’m kinda surprised you did not stumble upon more pistachio treat choices in your wanderings?
Oh, I had my eyes open for those pistachio treats – but was disappointed that they were no longer offered. Instead, strawberry-themed treats were thing during our trip. Not as exciting for me.
Something tells me all the social media chatter about Tokyo embracing pistachio, in last few months, may have just been AI generated ad hype.? And the fad did not sell as well as hoped – so it simply didn’t stay long. No matter, you are home now and free to enjoy all the hazlenut and pistachio treats offered at local businesses. Hope your tummy continues to improve.
Safe travels to your mom’s house. xo
Did Ivon like that Columbian coffee you brought home from Glitch?
Ivon has yet to try it.
Hey, Joe? Have you and Akemi ever tried shopping at Sanko Trading Co over near Trinity Bellwood park? They import things such as wood kitchen utensils from Tokyo. I recall one of the student contributors in the NS101 community telling me about it sometime ago. I think? 2019 or 2020? She said you can even make special requests for imported mushrooms/fruits and they do their best to try getting it for you.
Yes, we do frequent Sanko. That’s where Akemi picks up her rice. But selection is somewhat limited.
On Monday afternoon, the 17th, I was reading this entry when I fell asleep. Lol. When I woke up, they were showing the Toronto plane that was coming in for a landing and flipped over. They had a much worse flight than whatever you had going on in your pants. Glad you made it home safely and Sharky was a happy boy. Maybe you could stay home for a few days or until winter ends.
Would prefer to wait until winter ends but, alas, will have to try again. Maybe Thursday.
