After a week in Montreal, spending time with mom in the hospital, I’ve returned home to Toronto where I was greeted by Akemi and a seemingly confused Sharky who, nevertheless, seemed happy enough to see me.  As I was boarding my return flight, I received a text from my sister informing me that mom was finally being brought in for her epidural.  Then, when I landed, another update from sis informing me that the epidural was only 10% completed because my mother found it too painful and tapped out before the process could be completed.  She has the option of returning to finish up but, given her experience, I suspect it may take a while – and some convincing.  In the meantime, here’s hoping the mere 10% administered will have some positive effects in the coming days.

Before departing, however, I was able to sit down with mom and sis (and mom’s friend, Christian) fora  Thanksgiving feast of various Greek meats…

And some store-bought amaretti (because the place that makes the fresh ones is closed on Mondays).  I must admit that, while it was nice seeing mom and sis, I’ll be glad to get back to my regular dietary routine of apple cider vinegar in the morning, a well-balanced lunch, mid-afternoon matcha, and eggs and kefir for dinner.  I have my annual physical upcoming and I’ll need these next couple of weeks to fool the blood test!

So, what’d I miss while I was away?  What have you all bee up to?

  1. So refreshing to see a longer blog post from you today. Reminds me of old times. So glad you enjoyed your visit home. I also visited home recently, and now after taking some time yesterday to reunite with my wife after a week, have enjoyed my first full day “back in the saddle” of my routine — which pretty much consists of alternating between work and reading up on whatever I am interested in the moment. At the moment, that would be the “Butler Book”:

Today is also the last day to file taxes in the US for those of us who were naughty and didn’t do it on time back in April.

  2. Saw one of my medical specialists today. Time to re-think my routine to support meds consistency.

  3. Dang, I hope your mom will be feeling better soon after the partial epidural. She’s been through a lot.

Heading to Grand Canyon for (yet another) backpacking trip next week so been getting ready for that, along with a lot of late season trail work. I’m looking forward to the “break”. Going to a spot called Cottonwood Creek, which is a fairly remote spot where I’ll probably only see a few other people. Three nights of peace and quiet! 🙂

  4. I suggest eating lots of green leafy vegetables for your bloodwork. Eat what Akemi says and you’ll be fine. A drink a lot of water.

I spent a Thanksgiving in a 3 week rehab hospital after my mom fell, busted her head open, bleed on everything, and broke her pelvis. (She recovered just fine, at 94 yrs old). I put her in a wheelchair and went down to a family gathering room where the facility served a free thanksgiving lunch. My dementia dad enjoyed it too.

    Praying for your mom.

  5. Wishing your mother the best and hopes for her to have a quick and lasting recovery.

  6. Your mom is a tough lady and I hope that 10% works well.
    Enjoy your time home!

    👋🏻

  7. Wait, how do you drink apple cider vinegar, and more to the point, why do you drink it?

So sorry your mom couldn’t bear the epidural procedure. Poor thing. Maybe they can sedate her next time?? Welcome home and best wishes for your mom.

    1. I do tablespoons with a half teaspoon of cinnamon, half a lime, and plenty of soda water. It absolutely settles my stomach.
