I remember watching Star Trek: Voyager back in the day and really enjoying actor Robert Picardo’s endearing portrayal of The Doctor. So much so that when it came time to cast the role of uptight bureaucrat Robert Woolsey on SG-1, I suggested him. He was, of course, terrific and, over the course of his many Stargate appearances, went from I.O.A. pain-in-the-ass to Commander of the Atlantis expedition, winning over many, many fans in the process.
Bob and I have remained good friends over the years. During the Stargate days, I would have him and his family over for homemade ice cream while, on the rare occasions I visited L.A., would reciprocate with his world famous spinach pizza. Over the years, our get-togethers have been more infrequent as I haven’t had occasion to visit Los Angeles much while he’s had no reason to make the trip to Toronto. Until recently when he was cast in the upcoming Star Fleet Academy.
He’ll be in town for several months and so, earlier this week, we got together for what would be the first of, hopefully, many lunches. After our meal, we headed back to my place where Akemi (and Sharky) and I hosted an afternoon of amaro tasting…

Sharky commandeers the couch.
Bob is an absolute class act and it’s always great catching up. I look forward to our next get-together given that he has promised to make pizza!

It’s so cool to see Robert P. back in town and having a visit! I’m presuming he’s reprising his role as the Holodoc, but I guess it could be another version of that/him.
Thank you for sharing Robert Picardo pictures with us. You can tell he is a super nice guy.
Awesome! 👋🏻 It’s great seeing Bob and I’m glad he’s going to be town for a while.
How is your mom feeling?
I hope it’s a good weekend for everyone!
My birthday is tomorrow. wow. can’t believe I’m still breathing and actually made it one more year. So incredibly grateful to everyone who has helped me keep on keeping on!
And now that you, Joe, are going to have such wonderful company for the next several months it inspired in me a totally fun idea!
… That Rob Coopers b day is October 14. Yours on the 16th and Bob Picardo’s birthday October 27th -why not check ‘n see if Cooper could come down one weekend to Toronto this month and the three of you can do a birthday themed mini food crawl of sorts.
It’ll start with Rob C picking one food he enjoys that neither you or Bob have ever tried.
You go to a restaurant deli or cafe in TO that serves the item and you and Bob have to try at least two bites of the chosen item. Next up – Joe you pick an item. My recommendation would be to have Rob and Bob try one of your favorite cheeses. Next up of course would be Bob Picardo’s turn to pick one item he loves and make you and Rob try it.
Once you are done with your three single item mini crawl – it’s onward to birthday desert. Rob gets to pick the first one because his birthday is earlier than yours. You’re up next. Then Bob P. Again, Each of you has to pick a beloved desert item the other two have never tried.
Naturally, you’ll have to coordinate this via email in advance so the three of you can each find a single beloved food item the other two of you have not tried and have time to look up places in TO that serve the chosen items. Also, now that Bob Picardo is back working on a production you’ll have to pick a weekend (non workday) calendar date that works for all three of you.
I Can hardly wait to see all the fun food pictures!! It’ll be a blast! xo
Happy Birthday, Drea! Akemi says your idea sounds like a lot of fun.
Okay, here’s some fun Robert Picardo trivia for you my blog sibs and lurkers.
Some of you already know this – but I’m always surprised by how many sci fi fans don’t.
Bob’s first love is science. Before he caught the acting bug he was actually a science major in college And, I think? he was originally hoping to specialize in astrobiology.
He’s been a member of The Planetary Society since 1999 and in 2015 he landed himself a seat on its board of directors.
So the next time you encounter him at an event …. instead of engaging him in conversation about his stage and screen roles – ask him about the latest space exploration and discoveries on the Moon, Mars, Jupiter, or asteroid Bennu and others.
He absolutely loves inspiring a passion and sense of wonder for real science
and exploration in his fans because he knows science and sci-fi are part of the same eco system. Sci fi writers and fans dream the stuff that scientists then work toward physically solidifying in the real world. And vice-versa … scientists and science enthusiasts often come up with concepts and theories that inspire amazing sci-fi stories for writers and actors to share with the world.
