So, which were YOUR favorites?
OMG Joe!?!
I can’t choose between these…They are all rather stunning
Gee Joe. While I much appreciate the apparent effort that has gone into all the art here
I dont know quite what to make of your obsession of late with displaying impossibly busted,
perfect bodied, women as your ‘favorite’ art covers.
I’m starting to think you are trying to encourage more folks to buy Hustler + Playboy magazine
rather than inspire them to appreciate comicbooks.
Closest ones you got in this batch to more realistic, relatable,
(not obnoxious or overly done), beauty are
the Star Wars, New agents of Atlantis and Wonder Woman variant art.
So those are my picks this week.
As someone who supported that ‘you’ insisted on not overly
and unrealistically sexualizing your characters in DM,
it is my hope you never forget
sexy, strong, powerful, men and women
come in ALL shapes, sizes and looks.
Respectfully, I am weighing in on the artwork. And have offered up a wide variety of different looks. Of the 20 covers I chose, 7 focus exclusively on female protagonists and, of those 7, 2 could be considered “sexy”. 2 out of 20. You could argue some of the other selections were “fit” and atypical of the average woman (ie Invisible Woman or Wonder Woman), but I’m choosing from comic book covers released each week, most of which are superhero-related (which usually means fitted outfits on unusually fit bodies across the board – ie both Batman covers). My personal favorites are predominantly based on color, composition, and realism. It’s not that surprising that fully a third of selections are “painted” head shots with an overwhelming focus on the subject’s eyes. I like the centered composition of Event Leviathan, Thor, and Wonder Woman. I like the design of the Captain Phasma outfit and its varied representations. It’s no surprise that my favorite artists make repeat appearances on this weekly feature regardless of subject: Stanley “Artgerm” Lau, Rahzzah, Alex Ross, Yasmine Putri, Leonard Kirk, Ashley Witter and Jenny Frison to name but a few.
Are you suggesting that, moving forward, I should exclude any covers that don’t reflect a realistic female form?
Hmmmmm……war of the realms, omega ? Is that simply because it’s the last arc in the series ? Or will Gibbs’ rule 39 come into play ? Leaving Thor to face a certain Time Lord made out of anti-Matter ?
@Joe This is an ages old argument between male & female perspective
that’s been going on since the earliest beginnings of the womens lib movement.
“An all boys club holding women to an impossible, unrealistic,
standard of beauty and sexuality that very few women could ever possibly meet”.
“War of the sexes”. “He said – she said”.
blah. blah. blah. etc. etc. etc.
Yet, I find absolutely nothing wrong with sexy.
I enjoy the sensuality and sexuality of the human form.
I’m an in shape/fit, woman who men considered quite physically appealing
and sexy in my younger days. I grew up ice dancing and often conveyed
the sensuality and sexuality of the body’s lovely form in movements.
But I certainly don’t have an unrealistically perfect face,
36 double D’s or a perfect hourglass body.
And yes, I actually like the Wonder Woman variant art in todays batch.
Its not obnoxious or otherwise overly done in its beauty and sexuality.
And I enjoy the work of most of the artists you select, as well.
Albeit, what you seem to be arguing in your defense is that you chose
Belle: Oath of Thorns #1. Aero #1. and Red Sonja and Vampirella meet Betty and Veronica
based on “color, composition, and realism”. ????
That’s not to say an impossibly busty woman clad in latex, or bustier and garter belt, or an overly rippling muscled batman isn’t attractive too. As a baby boomer those sexual stereotypes in depicting bad ass superheroes and villains were certainly tolerated growing up and had their place. But diversity in conveying strength & beauty has come a long way since those 1950’s-70’s types. Smaller, slender, not so perfect, women and not so shredded, or incredible hulk like, men make convincing, attractive, superheroes too. Just as Zoey Palmer proved in DM she need not be male or a bigger built female to be a convincing bad ass android. Anywhooo, depiction of sexy super heroes is certainly not worth getting into a larger debate over. I guess I only mentioned it at all, because I was just a wee bit confused by some of your selections when considering your previous leanings toward the more modern, less stereotype, thinking.
Out of them all I think Spiderman number 8 is standing out to me more than the others. How Miles fades into a vision of the city the further down the page you look is a nice touch 🙂
All the choices are outstanding. I rather like Miles Morales, but that may be an after effect of the most excellent movie. War of the realms: Omega is the one which makes me want to know what is happening. Thanks for the excellent selection.
My favorites are “Catwoman” and “War of the Realms: New Agents of Atlantis”. All of the covers are outstanding.
Too bad Jodelle isn’t in one of your projects but you never know what the future holds. 😉
How’s the elbow?
Okay so I’m missing a lot this year, but did I dream you were actually filming and had something coming out?
Filming a show I’m running but did not create. Developing a plethora of projects.
What are some of the cool comic stores you visit in Toronto?
I usually hit the Silver Snail.
