A derelict ship floating in space. Its troubled crew awakened from stasis with no memories of who they are or how they got onboard. Their search for answers triggering the vessel’s deadly security system, awakening a relentless android bent on their destruction. Facing threats at every turn, they will have to work together to survive a dangerous voyage charged with vengeance, redemption, betrayals, and, ultimately, hidden secrets best left unknown.

My first interview for my upcoming comic SF book series, Dark Matter, is now up at Newsarama.  I discuss the characters, the ship, what led us to develop the concept as a comic book series, and why it’s called Dark Matter.  Head on over here (http://www.newsarama.com/comics/dark-matter-dark-horse-interview-111121.html) and check it out.

After checking out this sneak peek at the fist issue…

The comic launches January 11, 2012.  If you don’t have access to a local comic store, you can order it online here: http://www.tfaw.com/. They ship overseas!  Thanks to my editor at Dark Horse, Patrick Thorpe, for the heads up.

Finally, at long last, Akemi and I got to play host to Alexander and Sarah, our good friends from (Berlin and) Paris via Toronto.  Meeting them was the best thing about my time in Toronto.  Of course, given my time in Toronto, that aint’ sayin’ much – but suffice it to say these two never failed to lift my spirits (and, occasionally, stop me from throwing something through a window).

They arrived late, under cover of darkness, and quickly settled in…

I made the mistake of telling Lulu that Alex and Sarah live in Paris. Being a French bulldog, she naturally, jumped at the chance to butter them up and swing a Paris invite.
Photo op ruined by Lulu's well-placed, pointing hind paw supporting all twenty five pounds of her.
Take 2. Much better.
Alexander worships at the Shrine of Dionysius.

Since they were on east coast time, I figured they would be up at the crack of dawn the next morning.  And so, I woke up at the crack of dawn(ish) – 7:00 a.m. – headed downstairs and waited to greet them. Three hours later, they came downstairs, well-rested and rarin’ to go.

Bubba makes himself at home - on Alex making himself at home.
Alexander enjoying doggy-time with Lulu.

Following a leisurely morning’s lounging, we headed to Refuel for a leisurely lunch – and lounging.

Sarah and Alex - all smiles!
Aint they the cutest?
Alex marvels over the lemon herb risotto.

Following a great meal (I did the pulled pork sandwich!), we headed off to Granville Island to load up on supplies.

Doing the tourist thing.
Among the necessities we picked up were these marzipan animals. Cute. And tasty!

After that, it was back home for some R&R.  Hey, they’re on vacation, right?

Lulu checks out Alexander's anti-Apple gadget.
Jelly and Maximus enjoying the company.
Lulu already looking forward to her new place in Paris.
Bubba sleeps through it all.

For dinner, we headed over to Tojo’s…

Sarah demonstrates her exceptional chopstick skills.

Sushi!

A deceptively exhausting Day #1.

On tap for Day #2: A grand brunch!  Downtown and about!  Dinner with the rest of the gang!  Doggies!  Jombies!

  1. lol…worshiping the shrine………lol….

I miss SGU…I like your dogs though.

    Do you like cats?
Did you see the error in Resurgence where Destiny still has its collectors extended as it exits the star?

  2. Thanks for the link to the online comic book shop – very convenient! I think they would look at me funny if I showed up in the local comic book shop.

Nice interview, Joe! “…flashes of light in even the darkest of narratives, manifested through story elements like friendship, the wonders of discovery and, of course, humor”: I would have expected nothing less from you and Paul. I’m really looking forward to reading Dark Matter

Food looks great (except for the risotto which is a rather startling shade of green – but I bet it tasted good) and I’m glad the pups and the guests are getting along so well.

    “Shrine of Dionysus” – 😀

  3. @ Sparrowhawk – Not to be impolite, but I think you would fit in quite nicely in any comic book store, you little closet freak, you. 😀

    das

  4. What great pics! Dogs are happy, your guests (though hopefully Lulu didn’t ruin plans for a family– oh wait! maybe that was the plan– stop them from procreating so they have room for HER!!) delightful and the food very good (light on the Refuel pics though!)

  5. @Sparrow_hawk:

I think a babelfish only works if both parties use one…somehow I think my waiter wasn’t really that interested in trying to understand what I wanted to order.

Maybe a Star Trek universal translator?

Maybe there is an android app for that? I need to go look…

  6. Nice pics and interview although you didn’t tell us what Dark Matter means. 😉 Waah, waah, waah. Naah, just kidding.

Hope you have a great day!!!

  7. that is a good vacation. with the quality of food being sampled by your guests, it’s only proper to make sure their digestive systems have time to extract every bit of goodness from the feeding. Also good to see Franco-German relations being maintained by your diplomatic pooch( I don’t believe she misunderstood where they came from). Kudoos to you for advancing world peace. Now, if you would only get to work on the whole Iran thing, we’d be grateful.
Dreary, rainy day here, perfect for sitting on the computer. Minor health issues leaving me with little energy to do much else. Guess it’s time to catch up on some reading. Or join my doggie as she snores away in blissful sleep.

  8. Joe can’t wait till dark matter comes out in november gonna be the ever comic book I’ve owned the dogs all look very happy to have company over I love having company over for the holidays to me its what make the holidays the most special besides the turkey of course. Have a good day.

  9. Me gusta, glad that you guys were able to get together at last. Didn’t realize they live in Paris, my favorite city in the world. Lulu is such a good host. But seriously, no girl wants her weight broadcast to the world. Plus Lulu is so tiny; she can’t weigh more than 20 lbs. The rest is just a little water weight.

  10. I am just curious if Dark Matter is your way of continueing SGU without going through MGM?

Lost ship is the recess of space = crew stuck in space for 1000 years because jump didn’t work.

loss of memory do to time spent in stasis?

just something I thought of while reading what the comic was aobut.

  11. JOE,
The new 52 from DC hard to keep up I bought just about all I can carry home now to find time to read If they keep me interested i will keep on buying.

  12. Every once in a while I drop by the blog to see what’s new. I hope that the new series and the comic book are both successful…but I miss stargate. Whether it be SGU or SGA it really been tough entertainment wise over the last five or six months by now we would be either in the break if SGU came back in Aug or about to enter the mid-season break within the next few weeks.
Sometimes I hit the refresh button hoping to see a big headline blaring STARGATE RETURNING IN LATE SUMMER 2012, but it never does appear.

  13. I put that link on my Twitter feed. I’ll be checking it out after I finish working tonight. So glad we can buy it from an online source.

  14. BTW, I hope Trevor and Sarah have a great visit. I can’t believe the amount of liquor you have. Have you checked the expiration dates? Does booze have expiration dates?

  15. I heard today that Anne McCaffrey has died. She was the author that got me started reading Fantasy and Science Fantasy. I have noticed her books on your sidebar.
