Tonight on SyFy – Stargate: Universe, episode #17, Pain. The one where everyone freakin’ loses it!
(photos courtesy and copyright MGM Television)
Spent about an hour in editing today, tweaking my cut before sending it out to the network. In the end, I wound up adding a few more visual effect shots: a) to help tell the story and b) because they’re going to be cool. Now, I’m finally able to switch gears to that half-finished rewrite of Resurgence. I was aiming for Monday but, after some consideration, I think the script would benefit from a couple of extra (or should I say missing) scenes. In other episode news –
This afternoon, we watched a cut of episode #5, Cloverdale. I can’t wait to see the finished visual effects on this one!
Paul is on set – presumably on hand to provide first aid treatment if necessary – as they shoot episode #6, Trial and Error (which includes the confrontation scene that had the cast abuzz).
Carl is prepping episode #7, The Greater Good. You know, the one in which secrets will finally be revealed.
Rob is in New Mexico shooting episode #8, Malice (his version of The Searchers).
Remi is working on his rewrite of episode #9, Visitation, in which the crew must fathom a baffling encounter.
As mentioned, I’m still working on episode #10, Resurgence, that visual effects extravaganza.
Once Paul has completed his on-set producing duties on Trial and Error, he’ll be moving on to the as yet untitled episode #11. I suggested “Still Resurging”.
Brad just put out his final draft of episode #12, Twin Destinies. I love these types of episodes.
I suspect we’ll be seeing a first draft of episode #13, Alliances, sometime soon. This one explores one of the more interesting relationships aboard Destiny and I’m eager to see what Linda does with it.
More Art Department goodies from the Atlantis vault:
Today’s entry is dedicated to Jeff and his fiancée. I’ve got three words for you: Stargate – themed – wedding!
Hey, congrats, Jeff! I did see that you mentioned your engagement yesterday, but I kept getting distracted with my silly nonsense. Sometimes I am like…5 years old, or something. 😛
Joe, we were gonna go out to see Iron Man II tonight, but after after-work chores, looks like we will be staying in and watching SGU as it airs. Let ya know what I think!
Have a good one!
das
Thanks for the continuing Atlantis pics, Joe. I was actually fortunate enough to see the shuttle launch today from the NASA causeway at the Kennedy Space Center. It was incredible!! The best part was it was Atlantis!
WTF? Space ticks? Yeah, all the stuff to give me nightmares on tonight. Thanks! Have a great weekend 🙂
Hey, Joe!
Because the UK is now a week and a bit behind the US, I’ve been skipping your mailbag / comment sections, just in case I stumble across any spoilers for an episode I’ve not seen as yet: so appologies if someone has beaten me to the punch with this!
I’m looking forward to “Sabotage” on Tuesday; but a friend in the States snapped a picture of Destiny outside the galaxy they’re currently in, thinking it looked familiar and wanting a second opinion (I studied this stuff at uni). We’re both struck by how similar said galaxy looks to N104, the Sombrero Galaxy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sombrero_Galaxy), and are curious: is it just a “look alike”, or is it intended to actually be said galaxy?
I’m sure there are geeky people out there on forums who are dying to know, just so they can calculate how long it’d take a Daedalus-class to fly out there, or somesuch.
…it’s about 9 months, by the way. I’m sure you find yourself immensely fulfilled, now that you know that.
Atlantis pics are great, thanks for posting. (cast pics are always great, too 🙂
Hey, if Episode #11 goes through a bunch of rewrites, maybe you can call it Re-Resurgeryance.
@Das: I never said “evil”! 🙂
@Jeff. I agree with Mr. M. A themed wedding is cool. and it lets you weed out which of your relatives, on either side, you don’t want to associate with. they’re the ones who wrinkle their noses at the though.
Kudos to Carl for tonight’s episode. Nicely done. No major story arcs, but a nice view into several characters. I even felt bad for Rush. Glad to see Telford back next week. I’ll decide on O’Neill and Jackson once I see the episode. All depends on what role they play in the episode. Thanks for the Atlantis pics, not to mention the layout of the episode schedule. Good luck on hammering your story into submission, and getting all involved to sign off. And do try to enjoy the weekends(and maybe give us a peek at the dogs whle at it)
@PB: I guess there is an advantage to discovering great TV well after the first airing – I watched all 88 episodes of Farscape within 2 weeks and the only reason it took that long was because the final season and the mini-series are not on Netflix Instant View yet – but it makes me crazy that I can’t keep up with current shows I love. Tonight, for example – knowing great adventure awaits, but on a one week delay?! Insanity in the making! At least I get to catch up with Sabatoge tonight. 😀
@gforce: paint me jealous! What a great opportunity – I would have loved to have been there, too. Did you film it?
Well, just got in from dinner down at the local – I had a DELICIOUS veggie wrap – and a couple glasses of wine…and so I came in, rewinded…rewound…re…I started watching the new ep from the beginning, and immediately had to fast forward! Ugh. Like I said before – I don’t peek in windows so I can watch people having sex, so what on earth makes you think I wanna see two actors pretend-ugly-bumping on my tv??! Oh. Riiiiight. The popularity of porn tells us that human beings enjoy watching other human beings having sex…but it just makes me feel embarrassed, awkward, and uncomfortable…kinda like that time when I was a kid and walked in on mom and dad. 😯
😛
Anyhoooooooo…really a bit overdone (we get the point! People on Destiny screw around a lot!). Sure, I might joke about sex, but it’s just joking, not anything that’s even remotely meant to be titillating…soooo…
Okay. I’m gonna be blunt. That’s Hollywood sex. And, I hate to tell ya…Hollywood sex is NOT REAL! It never happens that way! If you want me to believe that these people are really having sex, then I DEMAND THE FOLLOWING:
1. Someone farts…loud.
2. The phone rings, and the man answers it…and proceeds to have a conversation while still…ya know…going at it. 🙄
3. A cat and/or dog sits in the middle of Mr. Missionary’s back, and proceeds to wash its butt.
4. A cat and/or dog pukes in the bed right next to the amorous pair.
5. “Ouch! You just cut me with your toenail!”
6. Some dude totally can’t figure out how to unfasten a bra.
7. Picture falls off the wall and lands on top of Mr. and Mrs. Humpty Dumpty.
8. “Ben-Gay??! ACK! I thought it was K-Y!”
9. Cramp. When the hell is someone gonna get a hand/wrist/leg/back/neck/hip cramp???!
10. Two people start making out…then decide they really would rather watch a movie.
Not that any of that has ever happened to me…but, ya know…I understand it has happened to other people.
😛
das
Oops, sorry about that, Joe! I was so totally en”grossed”, I totally forgot about spoilers. 🙂
@Das: LMAO, oi! Can’t even begin to imagine the Ben-Gay situation.
I must make a note to myself to never, never, re-watch tonight’s episode after cutting tall weeds or otherwise working in the yard.
@das, if I haven’t seen Iron Man 1 do I need to see it b4 I would see 2, so you think?

Tonights episode, what can I say, I was afraid Greer was gonna shoot me, so I was hiding behind my computer, whoa! Crazy, scary… and for sure some things will definitely change on board. A lot of pent-up emotions, gotta go somewhere, but dang, Greer seemed so much more intense. Going to watch it again to see what I missed the first time watching. It was an on the edge of my seat night, thanks to everyone. Eli seemed so calm thru it, what lies underneath there?? More questions,,than answers now,, I hope James finds some closure, she is so sad,,great acting. Rush was great in the water torture and I could hardly watch Volker( i got claustrophobic),especially when he woke up to the bed closed in on him… Everyone as usual did a wonderful job! So keep all those tics away from me and earth thank you. We will have to decomtaminate after every mission, should we go off at every planet? I would be leary also. Great story, was that Carl? Terrific job!
So I just watched Pain! This one is going in my top episodes of the season. I think I wrote more on this episode than I have for any of the other ones. Egads I loved it. I do have to confess that when Rush hit the glass wall I wondered if he’d done some previous mime work 🙂 “Scientist in Alien Glass Lab Container”
I have to confess that lately I’ve been re-visiting Star Trek Voyager and I can’t help it, I love SG more and this episode highlighted why on so many levels. Sci-fi is sci-fi and there are just so many plots to go around so definitely shows are going to overlap on a lot of them. Voyager hashed this storyline out twice and they didn’t even touch it to the level “Pain” did. I learned so much about the characters and their relationships. I saw very real effects and very real fears. (Excuse me while I go fangurly on you here). Thank you for being dedicated to creating strong, multi-layered characters and not being afraid to explore edgy storylines. That is perhaps my biggest complaint with so many sci-fi shows.
Also, when I read your blog today I thought Carl’s episode was named “The Greater Food” and then I blinked (because I knew *that* couldn’t be right). I think it’s because I always expect food when I come to your blog.
On a final note, today was my five year wedding anniversary. I’d like to share that it was my husband who introduced me to Stargate SG-1 (and his words were as I watched the first few episodes “It gets better” And it did!). As a result he now has to live with a wife who is always talking about what she read on your blog and how deep all the characters are. So you can blame him for my fangurliness.
Episode was wild. Variations on everyone’s assumed reality was quite a lot to really boggle the mind.
The initial scenes were a little too long, shorter clip would have sufficed.
At least we now know the answer to a question if Wray was going to be alright. Her twitter answer was, watch the episode…LOL Good answer.
“Pain” is an excellent episode. The storyline moves along briskly, even with all the character-revealing moments, which I thought were very, very well done. Strong beginning — predictable comment from me; but I really thought it was good, and very compelling with the strategic photography, all complemented by the choice of music. The unpredictable development was taut without being unnecessarily edgy, and it provided an effective twist to the opening action. (Sounds more like a game recap – sorry. *w*)
I loved how the plot kicked in with a healthy dose of suspense, which proceeded to build step by carefully developed step, and then got supercharged by spookiness. The score was once again invaluable in this regard; storyline and music couldn’t have been better matched.
One semi-quibble: Lt. James’s last line, related to normality, sounds a bit weak from overuse. Still, Col. Young’s overheard radio conversation and his ensuing order make for a strong ending.
Thanks to Carl and to the entire cast, crew, and production team for delivering another winner.
@Das: OMG! You are so right! I have to add to the list:
11. Ow! Ouch! You’re on my hair!
12. No, my knees do NOT bend that way!
13. Wait . . . I have to pee
14. I thought you were bringing the condums?
and my favorite
15. (footsteps approaching from hallway) Did you lock the door?
@ Deni – Okay…mebbe you said I was ‘really a good girl, with a bad girl inside wanting to get out’…but then I said I was just ‘playful’, and you said I wasn’t playful…I was just plain ol’ bad. *pouts*
But I’s not bad, I’s playful…RIGHT, JOE??! 🙂 (Yeah, yeah…I know…’annoying’ is more like it. 😛 )
@ Airelle – I haven’t seen IM2 yet (we never made it tonight), but I would suggest you see the first movie – first. It sets up the character and how he gets to be Iron Man, and that sort of ‘origin’ story is always good to see first.
das
Pain…an excellent episode. Nice to see everyone go a little bonkers! Great acting, especially by J. Smith and J. Benson. I thought she really did some damage to Scott for a while. Sometimes it was hard to differentiate what was real from what was imagined, which was a good thing. Can’t wait for next week…Bring on Subversion!
“Pain”…intriguing episode. Was feeling a first this was going to be more of a filler episode considering the expected content of the next three episodes but I was pleasantly surprised.
Watching it though raised another question…which then raised another.
(1) The Senator’s death is known about on Earth. Did they just explain it away as a private plane crash or something to that effect? And if so, what was Chloe’s disposition? She obviously is missing as well.
(2) Which then brings a bigger question. Over the run of SG1, SGA, and now SGU, there have been ‘alot’ of deaths of Earth people. When you start adding them up, it easily adds up to the thousands. There are also ‘alot’ of people involved or who have knowledge of the Stargate program. Is there any plans for a big reveal of the program? I know other episodes have toyed around with it, but the idea that all these people could be involved and years and years and years go by with everyone else being none the wiser..kinda pushes the bounds of believability. (I personally choose to remain blissfully ignorant of it though, lol).
Oh, and…Go Flyers!! 😀
das
Congrats again, Joe, for another very strong, very fine episode. Tell Carl he did good, real good!
Elminster
I am just a bit miffed that the long teased shot
of the three blue aliens coming through Destiny’s
stargate seems to have simply been a quick throwaway
shot from Rush’s tick induced hallucination.
I *so* wanted that scene..when actually shown..to
have MUCH greater meaning and purpose for the
story/show.
Oh well…I might feel a bit burned…but I have
to hand it to the network promo people….when you
got me..you really did get me.
@ JulieAloha – 16. “Left, left…no, no…a little to the right…up, up…DOWN! Gah! You missed it!”
😳
das
Look forward to seeing the episode tomorrow (I don’t have cable and my dad tapes it for me, so I go down to their place and watch it)!
Question. We’ve had a “Greer” episode and a “Rush” episode. Any chance of a good “TJ” episode? (Been told “Pain” will have lots of TJ but as I said, haven’t seen it yet) Ever since AH’s performance in “Faith” and up to current, she has definately become my favorite. Glad you guys cast her into the show as you would have missed a gem if you hadn’t!
Feel free to pass on to whom ever wields the “screentime” power, that they could give Alaina lots of screen time and I would be extremely happy. She is absolutely brilliant. And kudos to you guys for embracing Alaina’s RL pregnancy and allowing TJ to be pregnant as well. Loving TJ’s storyline! 🙂
Ok WOW. Loved pain. Way better than sabotage.
I kinda have to agree with @DAS here. I think it’s funny that you say sgu will be appropiate for young family audience and you throw this stuff in. And then you boast about how it’s eye clawing. Something doesn’t go there. 🙂 It didn’t have to be that graphic. That was a little unnessecary and I don’t think it helped hook people like a teaser is supposed to. Lol
Anyways, sex scene aside, it’s one of the best eps so far. Congrats to Carl and Will!!!!!!
Thanks so much,
Major D. Davis
Besides
Hey Joe,
OMG “Pain” was …..well OMG. I actually got sick to my stomach with Volker’s bed scene….AND Greer was making me actually nervous.
Quite the emotional trip. Great job to everyone.
Best to you Joe,
Always,
Cheryl 🙂
@das -rofl. I needed a good chuckle. Thanks!
@Das: 17. Hey, wake up!
Missed the first 20 minutes of both showings due to late dinner with visiting friend. Saw the rest of the second showing, though, and understood the plot, crisis, and conclusion.
Ingenious disease vector! I saw a lot of the Earth version during my New Jersey childhood. (no spoilage here!)
I did tape the episode, so, Joe, were there important clues for future story arcs? Not that I’m prudish, just trying to be more efficient. 🙂
Fantastic episode! Well lets get this out of the way…what is it with the sex scenes, really, they aren’t that necessary and if you absolutely just had to have one it could could be much more subtle.
That aside, what was in my mind going to be a boring episode taking place during the travel between galaxies now ranks in my favorites list.
A couple things ‘bugging’ me (pun intended 🙂 ):
1. there was one mention of Franklin but no real exploration of what happened to him. this obviously will be addressed in the future but to me at least seemed like a more pressing issue
2. it might just be me but for a ship with an inferior FTL drive it sure didn’t take them long to reach the other galaxy. if we consider that it took the deadalus 2 weeks to arrive in pegasus then it might be safe to say it would have taken destiny 4 weeks min to reach the same distance. if this is the case and 4 weeks passed since the last episode then why are people just now feeling the effects of the bugs, especially since chloe was effected immediately after becoming host to one.
3. the one moment i had been looking forward to since the first airing of the second half trailer turned out to be nothing more than a hallucination. for days i ran through my mind how the aliens were able to dial the gate and reach destiny, and if their intention was to do damage or to make peace. whoever is in charge of advertising should get a raise for taking such a small item in a story and making seem like such a momentous event.
-ZPB
Pain was great fun all around. Not much on superduper plot, but on character arcs, it was great. James is really stepping up into the limelight – I fear that you’ll kill her off horribly now! Rush/Wray/Greer stuff was intense, and extra bonus creepy points to Volker’s hallucination.
Carl did a great job here – looking forward to Paul’s ep, followed by your two.
Disregard last paragraph of my last post, all. On review, it’s unnecessary as well as nonsensical.
Hi Joe this may sound like a stupid question but do you know if Stargate Universe will be picked up for syndication this fall on local tv stations to replace Stargate Atlantis?
Give Jeff and his fiancee a zpm as a wedding present and a F-302 to fly somewhere for their honeymoon.
Das: I literally lol’d…awesome list…Oh and add stopping and trying to be super quiet when someone knocks on the door or only noticing that you were hitting your head against the dresser with the glass doors in his office when he moves you away.
Cheers, Chev
Coucou!
ça va Joseph? Moi oui.
Gros bisou
I guess that means Destiny is across the void then? Unsurprising, given that Destiny: Adventures with No Planets would have made a bad spin-off.
I liked Pain. As much as we all want ‘arc’ episodes, I don’t mind filler eps. Sometimes they’re not all that good (Water being a good example), but sometimes they’re very good, like Pain was.
Nice to see some of the non-main characters getting to do a few things. And I loved the two-way hallucination Rush and Greer were having. I hope Rush apologised to Wray after that. 🙂
@JulieAloha: I did take a short video but I was pretty preoccupied with just watching. Maybe I’ll post it once I get home.
On Pain: Paranoia – it’ll destroy ya!
>>>>We’ve had a “Greer” episode and a “Rush” episode. Any chance of a good “TJ” episode?
We didn’t have a “Greer” episode. “Lost” spent no more time on Greer than it did four or so other characters. His flashbacks lasted in total about 3 minutes. This is in stark comparison to Rush who dominated the screen time of the previous episode that featured his wife.
While I’d love to see more TJ too, an argument can be made that “Faith” was just as much a TJ episode as “Lost” was a so-called Greer ep. And lets not forget “Water” which also put TJ front and center as she tried to figure out how to stop the alien visitors.
Ladies: The “Hollywood sex is not real list” is too funny (and too true)! My hubby’s famous line is “Is this a bodysuit?”
I don’t get to watch TV shows when they air. Life with a teenager, you know?
I’ll try to watch the SGU eppie today. Thanks for the sex scene warning folks. Now that I know not to let my teen watch the show, and I know it’s coming, it is not such a shock. I usually just fast forward through them on most shows. I like to see characters hook up but I don’t need to see the details.

Yeah, right, like that could happen…..
OK some people have taken exception to the sex scene, but no one has mentioned the fact that in the next series of frames, they got into a physical confrontation and then she KILLED him. Why is it that the sex is bad and yet the violence is perfectly acceptable and ‘family friendly.’ Personally, I’m fine with both, but I just find it interesting is all.
Actually, in the sex scene, they could have brought the lighting up a little bit. *heh heh heh*
I have said before that I like Greer, but man he is borderline NUTS. He’s riding a very fine line between holding it together and going postal on everyone’s ass…..
I feel kinda bad for Rush, he was very traumatized (obviously). He’s going to have flashbacks/nightmares for a very long time. Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, if I had to hazard a guess.
Looks like Wray is going to hold a grudge eh? lol
I’m thinking they should use the stones to get a little psychiatric help up there. This series is a lot darker (figuratively and literally), but I like the change. Can’t believe there are only two more episodes left. It seems like it just restarted.
Congrats Carl on the great episode.
Thanks for the pics Joe.
Have a good one!
Kymm
@Das
Spoiler alert
Can we really comment on sex that never happened???
By the way, when Matt said he couldn’t do this (because of his relationship w/ Chloe) there should have been a line in the script: “What, that’s it…”. 😉
Best wishes…
Bryan.
Ps. Sorry. All kidding aside: great episode. I loved the dark road you took Greer down with this story. I also enjoyed the story line for Chloe. It was a nice touching scene for her… But I feel this may cause her to push Matt and Eli away. Can’t wait to see what happens.
“Still Resurging”….love it! 😀
Anyway I thought I’d just pop on to say that I really loved “Pain” last night. I think it did a ton of things right which could’ve gone very, very wrong. The scoring (particularly when Scott was chasing his ‘son’ around) was really fantastic and set a wonderful tone for everyone’s nightmarish hallucinations.
A couple of things regarding the contemporary/modern music… I was wondering what song was played over the beginning of the episode while James was dreaming about gettin’ BUSY with Scott?
I was also hoping that, in future episodes (be it season 2 or whenever), you might be willing to tone back the clip montages with the music overlay. It’s been good in a few cases so far, but I’m starting to feel like I’m watching Scrubs or Greys every week. It’s getting just a bit tiresome….
In any case, hope all the SGU cast/crew keep up all the great work. I love the show and find a weeklong wait between episodes nearly unbearable. I don’t know how I managed the midseason, and I don’t know what I’m going to do for the upcoming break =\
Take care!
Rob =)
Please thank Carl for an intense ep!!!!! So many excellent moments. I could recount them all for you but instead here is just a few of my favorites.
The Greer, Rush & Wray story was just incredible. So much underlining paranoia and fear coming to the surface.
Great stuff from Riley. Loved his line at the end about remembering the bug spray. Loved Young’s concern for and confidence in T. J.
Only two more eps until the end. I hope you are not planning some nasty cliff hanger. ; )
“Pain” is the best episode thus far. Not my favorite episode mind you (that would be “Divided”), but the episode that best demonstrates the enormous creative potential of the series. The concept of a parasitic alien whose symptoms are vivid and potentially dangerous hallucinations that reveal the subconscious fears of key crew members is original and imaginative. This episode created new interpersonal dynamics among the crew that will have to be explored/resolved in future episodes.
I think Julia Benson delivered a truly compelling performance and Jamil was his usual magnetic on-screen persona.
About the sex scene: I think it was not only appropriate to the plot but also tastefully delivered. Julia Benson, for obvious reasons, is very difficult to film in a sex scene without appearing exploitative, but you guys found the right balance in this episode. I found that I was more concerned with the emotional repercussions of the act than by the act itself, which is precisely what was intended.
In terms of character development, I love the fact that Lt. Scott still seems determinedly oblivious to the emotional havoc he has wrought within Lt. James, even in the face of this crisis. A more emotionally mature individual would at least acknowledge James’ feelings and his part in creating them. Scott does nothing. I like how truly human Scott is being portrayed. Kudos to Brian Smith. I love to dislike Scott.
Hi Jo’
i’m Ludo from France,
I apologize in advance for my English
Do you look for new actors for the SGU season to come?
I’m a french amateur actor, furthermore, I am a big fan of stargate since the beginning.
i’m 21 and i am very serious, motivated and rather not bad lol !
Furthermore, I knows the universe of stargate with exactness.
It’s a dream to work with you ! ! !
Bye!
Ludo
Space ticks? 😀 Wow.
Ooh, teaser is what comes before opening title. How silly of me. One of best openers, yet. 😀 Right next to “Divided”.
Very intense and creepy episode. The Wray/Greer/Rush scenes were almost unbearable, so much tension and I really thought Greer is going to shoot Wray. Subtle moment between YJ and Young was very nice, well done.
A bit sad to see that S1
S1 is coming to an end. *
@ZeroPointBatteries
There were a couple of throwaway lines in the episode indicating that they arrived in the new galaxy, went to the planet, got the ticks, and that’s when the episode starts. The most notable was Lt. Scott’s sarcastic “Welcome to the new galaxy,” line. It wasn’t explicitly stated though, and for a bit I was confused as to the time line as well.
Everyone did wonderful work in Pain! I was biting my nails the whole time. My favorites included the paranoia between Rush, Greer, and Wray and the scenes between Young and TJ in the infirmary. Looking forward to next week.
Hoping though that there won’t be as many muscial montages. I think that kind of takes away from the action.
Otherwise, great as usual!!
i guess i belong to the minority camp who absolutely hate “Pain”. I think the episode would have a lot more emotional impact (and overall impact on the SGU story) if the characters actually did what they did in err “plot reality” without having to hide behind the “it’s all an illusion, plus alien ticks messed with my mind so i can’t be held responsible” plot device.
is there any chance that we can see a “Martyr” (french movie) style depiction on the dark side of humanity? or another Apocalypse now. or better yet Rush/Young/Camile becoming something similar to Captain Jack Harkness , or William Adama? don’t get me wrong, I love the direction that SGU is going, exploring how people abandon and recover their humanity in crisis, but imo it’s still a bit too idealized. it’s like watching Batman from the early days. everyone fighting for truth, justice, or love, Everyone always end up doing the right thing. it’s as if the US military wrote the script as a propaganda piece lauding the virtues of American Soldiers
/rants off.
@joe please kill someone important, pretty please? (preferably in a cold blooded execution, let Camile shoot someone in the back of the head while the Character is pleading for mercy ) or at least cut off an important character’s hands or feet or disfigure them permanently or something. no more “heroes always get stunned and shot in the foot, only the bad guys die”.
At Fora there is a nice piece about the psychology of war and crises. Soldiers sent to Iraq began their days by fishing a dead insurgent’s body out out a septic tank just so that the enemy’s family can have closure. but a year later, he shoots at the enemy, with total disregard for bystanders shouting “die monkey die”. the life of an iraqi is worth less to him than an animal… i’d really like to see a plot of that sort 🙂
*(yes yes i know, i’m one sick puppy, but hey, stories are about people right? )
Hi Joe…
I have been on the road a lot lately so I’ve lost track of your Blog.. I miss it actualy. I’ll be in Vancouver Wednesday and Thursday on a business trip… Actually not to far from the Bridge studio’s… Trought all the time I’ve been reading your articles, Fuel Restaurant as become an obsession. So for my first time in BC, I have to go there. Is it far from Howe Street ?
A lost Montrealer in Vancouver.
Robert
OK, now I understand what I missed in the first 20 min. of “Pain”. Will watch the tape.
Failed to mention in last night’s posts…As a “hobby drummer”, I immediately recognized the type of rhythm instrument underneath the “suspense/tension” score. For Joel Goldsmith: Did you use PVC pipe, bamboo tubes, or a synthesizer /drum machine?
For those who are puzzled by mention of PVC pipe, look up The Blue Man Group.
>The Wray/Greer/Rush scenes were almost unbearable,
Personally I found them kinda funny, well the part when Greer imagines Youngs telling him to use deadly force on Rush/Wray, you know with the whole fears, desires, this for Greer deep down probably borderlined desire, he seemed so happy at one point lol
I don’t personally think Greer hates either of them, more tolerates, but still that scene it just made me smile.
WTH??! What’s up with Space not showing SGU next week and waiting for the 28th? I was perfectly happy with it airing on the 21st and skipping the 28th since I’m going to be out of town, but skipping the 21st and airing the 28th just sucks because it means I’m going to miss it, and it looks soooooo good. 😥
Anyway, Pain was great. Must rewatch, as per usual. Like most others, I loved the Rush/Greer/Wray interactions. Especially since they were all “seeing” different things: Rush the blue aliens, Greer a mutinous plot, and Wray actual reality, yet those three “realities” intersected to cause some great tension and drama.
Greer really is walking along the edge of sanity, isn’t he? And Rush still needs to deal with what the blue aliens did to him. PTSD anyone?
With Lt. James, are we now in “hell hath no fury” territory? At least when she hallucinates, anyway. Looking forward to seeing how she deals in reality with her “actions” toward Scott in the hallucination. While it was an hallucination, and she knows it, I would think that her actions have to affect her in some way just in knowing that she is capable of actually killing him over the loss of the relationship. Although, in fairness Hallucination Scott was being a jerk and kind of precipitated his own fate.
Interesting look into Volker’s mind. Never would have guessed he was claustrophobic since he doesn’t seem to exhibit any tenseness or uneasiness over being “trapped” on Destiny. Although with the gate available, I guess there is the knowledge that he can get off the ship, and does, now and then, so he’s not trapped trapped, and the ship is more spacious than the little spot he found himself in.
I can see not having TJ get infested with a tick because it could have affected the baby, but I would have really liked to see what Young would have done had he been infested. Uber controlling? Paranoid? Guilty? Join Greer in the hunt for Rush and Wray?
So . . . decontamination procedures in the future for all offworld teams upon their return?
So I watched Pain. Good episode. I really liked Greer’s hallucination and I noticed that hallucination!Camille had on a different shirt than real!Camille; those little details are always fun. I also really liked Rush’s hallucination too, how he thought the ship was being over taken by the aliens so took everyone out with a pipe…hee, Rush on the destiny with the pipe (ala Clue).
I really liked how Young stayed in the infirmary and helped TJ/was being overprotective yet again. It’s sweet, and I kinda ship ’em.
Do those letter that Young wrote to Scott and TJ ever come into play?
Anyhoo, great eppie and totally can’t wait for next week with Jack, Daniel and the LA! Did I spy Jack on the Destiny? I guess he decides to finally check on things for himself. Yay!
Hey Joe
Just finished watching Pain, again. I have to say I like the “music montages”. I know a lot of people say otherwise, but I kinda like them. I like the slowing down at the end and “recapping” everyone involved. Was it really timed for the song to say “I need psychiatric help” when Greer came by? Ya, I thought so..
Elminster
Yeah, most of the music montages have passed me by, mostly because I’m not really one for listening to Lyrics, but last night’s seemed to stick out a lot. Very good choice.
I might have to go back and listen properly, now 😉
Oh, and just to say.. “Argh, Pain, Pain, Pain!!” Had that running through my head for most of the episode… d’oh!
So in short; nothing happened. Except the pretentious noisy music videos.
Hoping for: Someone who didn’t disclose their tick, because they like the visions
Missing quote of the night:
“Is there anything i can do?”
“Yeah, take your clothes of”
@dasNdanger
“I don’t peek in windows so I can watch people having sex”
Indeed, that’s what they invented binoculars for.
“The popularity of porn tells us that human beings enjoy watching other human beings having sex”
Well, couldn’t they watch youporn.com instead?
“If you want me to believe that these people are really having sex, then I DEMAND THE FOLLOWING”
“A cat and/or dog pukes in the bed”
Where do you get the cat or dog?!
Oh wait, a cat gets into the SGC and licks one of the stones! And is immediately replaced with … who would I like to see walk around on all fours for an episode – how about Chloe .. yes – cunning plan! (insert cackle here)
@Kymm
“Why is it that the sex is bad and yet the violence is perfectly acceptable and ‘family friendly.’ ”
Because violence is the good old american way don’t you know – besides, it was Gods punishment for him having sex 😉
(Actually, you have to start somewhere *g*)
Hey guys, just a quick note.
There is a huge problem with Porn today and kids being exposed to sex at a young age where they might not understand everything about what they see which might cause them to be an easy victim of Porn. Not just that, they are at a place where they might not realize the significance of it, and as a result, are able to fall victim of many sexual problems.
However, there are very few kids that when they are exposed to violence in a TV show(thats not graphic), they begin to crave online violence videos and develop an addiction. :p
Thanks so much,
Major D. Davis
Oh and one quick question if thats cool with you.
Ive really been enjoying the Kino scenes, especially the most recent ones, will you guys be producing more kino scenes for season 2?
Thanks so much,
Major D. Davis
@Shadow SteP: LMAO at your Chloe scenario 🙂
Another good episode. I like Lt. James. Don’t make her a woman scorned. I wan’t her to be an asset to the show. I want her to grow from the experience.
Oh and one other question
Do you guys have any updates regarding BAG?
Thanks so much,
Major D. Davis
I’ve been told to: “Prepare to be censored,” but I’m going to go ahead and try anyways.
Just so you know, SGU does not have a great deal of the fans’ support.
The fact that the fans actually went through the trouble to make a site dedicated to allowing fans to speak their minds on this topic speaks volumes. The censorship of Gateworld and (apparently) your blog is ineffective, if anything it merely galvanizes its opposition.
@ Matt Silver—-Ditto on the Lt. James feelings. One of my favorite things about the Stargate series has always been the vast array of secondary characters. With that, though, always comes the fear that the moment the character gets any spotlight, they’re blown up in some unexpected way. I think I spent the latter half of Atlantis expecting Lorne to spontaneously combust at any moment.
@Shadow Step
That explains my confusion. I am Canadian. *chuckle*

An episode 16 1/2 is missing 🙂 the one would show us a planet with those nasty ticks!

Hi Joe! (thanks for your first answer)
Just a little question:
Will there be more action in season of SGU to come?
(sorry for my very bad english)
Thanks Joe, for you answer and your work for more than 10 years.

JUST HOLD ON THERE!
“Carl is prepping episode #7, The Greater Good. You know, the one in which secrets will finally be revealed.”
You mean there is an actually an SGU episode with more than one word in the title? Can it be?!
I haven’t posted in a looooong time (REALLY busy with working on my PhD and new university job), but I’m cooped up after being in the hospital with a nasty reaction to an antibiotic, so I’ve had time to catch up on your blog. I guess that’s a plus, at least. 😉 Anyways, I had to laugh when I read the dedication line on this post: my husband and I totally worked the SG1 theme song into the recessional at our wedding, and it was pretty much my favorite thing about the ceremony…lol. 🙂
I’ve always been wondering? Will we ever see those aliens from SGA: Daedalus Variations. May it be possible to put them in SGU.
‘An extremely advanced race known as the Hysarsi that gained its bloody foundation in the M51 group when an Ancient destiny type ship was found trapped in the core. As a result they quickly spread though out the M51 group and beyond.
Their hierarchy structure relies upon a higher class of industrials, intellectuals, celebrities, Government officials and commanding admirals and generals. The lower class are known as Drones, made up of those in military service, construction and maintenance of which are highly controlled through a link to the upper hierarchy.
A hundred or so years later they meet their match with the ‘blueberry’ aliens, as they would go fanatical over any available Ancient technology. The Hysari also came into contest with the later Ancients when they tried to create bases in the Pegasus. In an alternate dimension Sheppard’s team encounters the Hysari when they had successfully set up their bases in Pegasus and had defeated the Ancients.’
The Destiny encounters these aliens during some obscure episode of an obscure later season for an unknown reason, all to be decided by you, the cast and crew, and most possibly Rob, of whom his character would possibly try to weasel a deal with them.
