Captain’s Log – Stargate Unknown: I have commanded starships through Klingon ambushes, Romulan incursions across the Neutral Zone, and temporal anomalies that would unsettle lesser officers, but none of it prepared me for this. The Enterprise-D has been refitted, re-crewed with the finest officers from across multiple realities, and given a new mission: explore this strange new universe, and find a way to get everyone home.

The hum of the warp core fades as the Enterprise-D drops out of warp, and the star field ahead resolves from streaking lights into cold, fixed points. Ops reports four near-simultaneous contacts within the first ninety seconds of arrival.

CONTACT ONE – A subspace signal, heavily degraded, cycling on the Federation emergency frequency but fragmented beyond standard universal translation resolution. It’s coming from bearing 227 mark 14, approximately 350,000 kilometers off the port bow. Long-range sensors confirm vessel drifting cold – no running lights, no drive signature, no signs of life. (The Ghost Ship)

CONTACT TWO – A scrambled tight-beam transmission interception by the communications array, passing through this sector on an encrypted Ferengi commercial channel. Ops has partially decoded the manifest: a shadow auction for Artifact Omicron-8, provenance heavily redacted. Its appended energy signature matches no commercial technology on record. It reads, partially and imperfectly, like an illicit subspace weapon outlawed under the Khitomer Accords. (The Heist)

CONTACT THREE – Starfleet priority channel, addressed directly to Captain Kirk. Locate and extract Harven Zax, a dangerous intelligence broker, currently aboard a disabled Vespian cruiser at coordinates 188 mark 44, and deliver him to a rendezvous point at the edge of the Expanse within seventy-two hours. He is wanted, arguably, dead or alive, by three different groups: the Romulans, the Orion Syndicate, and a Klingon Great House. (The Delivery)

CONTACT FOUR – A lateral sensor sweep reports a complete absence of subspace comm traffic from Kirin Station Outpost Gamma-3, a Federation research installation on the Expanse’s rim. Gamma-3 has a crew of twenty-three and files automated status reports every four hours. The last confirmed report is sixty-three hours old. The station’s emergency beacon is not active. There is no debris field. Simply… silence. (The Fracture)

The bridge is dead quiet.

Four crises. One ship. No back-up.

  1. I think we’d better check out that Ghost Ship.

  2. Without confirmation that the signal from “The Ghost Ship” is a distress signal, I’d have to vote for “The Delivery” as it sounds like a direct order.

    1. Ordinarily yes. Kirk is a good military officer and a direct order from Starfleet would take precedence of course. But is it really his Starfleet in this strange new reality? Are we sure they can be trusted here? After all, Kirk has seen his share of alternate realities, enough to make him hesitate.

And there’s a target right there. Just off the bow. Spitting distance. With… well not quite a distress signal, but close enough that standing orders about providing aid to ships in trouble could be invoked, if you were to squint a bit. After all, there could still be people on there the scan didn’t detect, and out here in the lonely depths of space we may be their only hope.

Besides. If we leave now, Kirk will have to suffer not only an extremely disapproving stare from Bones, but another sermon on how the wisdom of G’Quan would caution against this path. Heaven forfend.

Send an acknowledgement to Starfleet. We’re on our way. But before that, we should engage impulse engines and edge closer to The Ghost Ship.

  3. Contact one-it is the closest one, and possibly won’t take long?

  4. Well, given Kirk is at the helm and we have just received a priority mission from Starfleet Command to extract this shifty spy Harven Zax, there is no alternative I see. We verify the message’s authenticity and set a course for the disabled Vespian cruiser.

  5. The Fracture

  6. Delivery
    Direct order from SC
    Send probe to
    Ghost ship
    Fracture
Send shuttle craft to investigate and aid

The Fracture. A Star Fleet outpost that may need vital assistance and no other ship near enough to respond. This is our first mission.

  8. Contact four. The Fracture

  9. The Fracture. Was tempted by the Ghost Ship, but there are more lives at stake in Fracture.

Follow Star Fleet direct orders while using sensors to try to track status of Kirin Station Outpost Gamma-3. Both involve The Expanse …

  11. A direct order from Starfleet would indicate a matter of urgency and importance. Rescuing Harven Zax should be the first mission. He may have information that could help the crew get home (or some vital information for Starfleet). Duty matters: Contact 3 – The Delivery.

  12. We don’t know how many lives are in danger in these other three missions, or indeed if only an asset’s cover is in jeopardy by following Starfleet Command’s priority mission.

We have in the first case a lack of information, in the second case some Ferenghi up to Ferenghi activities, in the third case a priority mission from Starfleet Command, and in the fourth case, again, a lack of definitive threat let alone potential casualties.

This information broker could be carrying information that could stop or start an interplanetary war.

Respectfully, I’d airlock the lot of you who didn’t vote for Kirk obeying Starfleet in lack of compelling reason to do otherwise. Just sayin’.

    The Ghost Ship…

  14. The Ghost Ship smells too much like a trap. A Federation outpost suddenly goes silent? Must be in trouble! I vote for the Fracture. The others can wait.

  15. As tempting as The Fracture is, Delivery is the only option given the nature of the delivery of the order. Even if this may or may not be Kirk’s Starfleet, he is still an officer and bound by duty until it’s proven otherwise.
