I checked out eight more crime shows.  Here’s how I rate them…

A TIER

The Art of Sarah – I really enjoyed this stylish character-driven psychological thriller set in the world of luxury handbags.

Bad Guys: Vile City – A worthy successor to the original Bad Guys delivers all of the intrigue, plot twists, and kick-ass action of the original.

Patriot (2 seasons) – The dark humor is downright pitch in this quirky but wildly imaginative espionage thriller with a touching emotional core.

C TIER

Trigger – Initially riveting in its What If? exploration of a hot button issue, but grows increasingly silly on its way to ludicrous over-the-top ending.

DNF

Big Mistakes – Annoyingly neurotic characters.

His & Hers – Zero chemistry between our two leads.  This one’s hard watch.

Pale Mountains – The small community mystery just didn’t interest me.

Sins of Kujo – I was on board until they killed the pug.  F this show.

  1. I highly recommend UK crime shows, especially Luther starring Idris Elba, which is fantastic, and The Devil’s Hour, which is going to release its third and final season in the near future, I believe.

Not sure how you feel about a bit of dark humor in your crime shows, but Slow Horses somehow strikes that balance perfectly, and Gary Oldman is absolutely killing it as the acid-tongued MI5 agent who supervises a unit of the agency’s screw-ups exiled from MI5 proper.

And a sleeper pick: Blue Lights, which is about police constables in northern Ireland. I did not realize that they’re the only cops in the UK who are always armed due to the residual anger and violence from the “troubles.” As an American and native New Yorker, I knew nothing about it going in, and it’s so different compared to policing culture here.

As for your list, Bad Guys sounds like it might be my speed.

Love Slow Horses. Couldn’t get into Luther or Blue Lights.

The Devil’s Hour! That’s more of a timey wimey series rather than straight procedural but can’t wait for the 3rd series. Can’t beat Line Of Duty… going off track Joe!

  2. Would love your take on Dept Q on Netflix.
