Film #9: Peppermint Candy (1999)

Following a man’s suicide, time traverses back to reveal six chapters of his life on why he committed suicide.

My thoughts: A fascinating rumination on life and missed opportunities set against the backdrop of some of South Korea’s touchstone historical events.  This one no doubt resonates more with Koreans who lived through these times.

Film #10: A Bittersweet Life (2005)

Things go wrong for a high ranking mobster when he doesn’t follow his boss’s orders.

My thoughts: Narratively sparse, but brilliantly executed.  One of my very favorite Korean films.

Film #11: Hide and Seek (2013)

A successful café owner sees his life turned upside down after his long-estranged older brother mysteriously disappears.

My thoughts: A pretty effective little chiller whose late twist, while surprising, doesn’t really track in hindsight.
