With time ticking down on 2025, I’m scrambling to get more than a few things done before ringing in the New Year. I have a series overview to write, some meetings to take, some Columbo episodes to rewatch and write up, a passport to renew, and an O-1 visa to secure ahead of the Stargate writers’ room that convenes this January in L.A. The plan is to go down for three months with Akemi and Sharky and help Martin and his team break the show’s first season. We’ve already scoped out a nice safe walkable neighborhood we like and will start looking for a furnished place once things have crystalized. Akemi is thrilled that we will soon living close to a Trader Joe’s. And she’s also thrilled to be missing most of this upcoming Canadian winter. I could say the same for Sharky who is no fan of the deep freeze and is, no doubt, looking forward to getting back to his old stomping grounds.
And while we’re in Los Angeles, we’re going to look into getting Sharky a friend, a fellow pug he can snuggle up with nights or, at the very last, roundly ignore. We have our eye on two candidates – both special needs dogs with mobility issues. But that shouldn’t be a problem given our experiences with both Suji and Lulu.
Of more immediate concern is this final weekend of the fantasy football season that sees my Snow Monkeys play a must-win game against an equally desperate opponent. Even though they’re projected to lose, a win would secure a playoff spot for my lowly team that started the season at 0-3. What a cinderella story this would be if they could buck the odds one more time!
So, any of you all in the L.A. area?

I’m sure you’ll handle the task list with efficiency, Joe, but based on my past experience, I’ll stick my nose in to advise priorities:
1. Passport
2. Visa, immediately upon receiving full-validity passport.
The rest can be fit in while waiting for 1 & 2 to filter through bureaucracies.
Thanks, Gilder. You’re the expert!
You’re welcome. Some things stick with one.
I’m six hours west of LA in Phoenix, but I’ve been there enough times to HIGHLY recommend eating at Philippe The Original. They’ve been open since 1908 and claim to be the birthplace of the French Dip. Not sure if that’s true, but they make a damn good sandwich!
Thanks!
Hey! I’m in L.A.
Does that mean the new series would be filming down here too? Not sure I could handle a Stargate that doesn’t have a least a little North Vancouver in it. 🙂
No. The location of the writers’ room has no bearing on where the series will be shot.
I was wondering where the production was going to end up for the new show. It would have been wild if it was back at Bridge, but I suspect that is pretty busy now. I’m not in LA of course, but I WILL be in Toronto in February for a couple of days, LOL! We’ll have to miss lunch this time around, I guess. I’m trying again to do my cross-country train trip that got cut short a couple of years ago, so I’ll have a free day in TO.
Hooray! I’m sure Sharky will be thrilled with his new sibling. … as well as to be away from Toronto’s cold weather for a bit. That he does seem to have a nurturing nature at times, think – special needs mellow little sister in need of a bit of TLC and affection from an older brother.
So, What are Christmas plans? Are the three of you heading to Montreal to take your mom out to dinner? Or is Andria planning to put up the Christmas tree at your mom’s house and have everyone spend the holidays there?
Off the cuff … Fun Idea for the new writers room. Remember the Waring pineapple in various sg1 episodes?
I’m thinkin’ a few staggered episodes where we see Sharky walking down a street with the words “Blind guard dog” clearly printed on his leash. 😆 In other episodes , we might see Ivon B’s cat contentedly sleeping up on an open mid level kitchen or bookcase shelf in someone’s apartment or maybe at a lab, office, or bookstore. Swatting at anyone that stops in front of the shelf to make nice and pet it. For season two:
A fan contest could be held for the shows viewers to win a cameo or walk on spot for their beloved pet. lol. Or heck!! maybe? One or two of the main or recurring characters could include a lovable fur or feather baby?
almost as much fun as Teal’c sitting in the audience at The Vagina Monologues, no?
Just to be super annoying because I have insomnia tonight .. how ’bout a spoof episode with a planet inhabited by domesticated, earth like, dogs that have evolved well enough to understand and speak any human language but still behave in same manner as earth like dogs. lol
can ya tell I’m a jonezing for a third installment of Sharky Productions?! 🤣😂🤣🤣🤣😂🤣😅😆
That sounds so exciting! Good luck with all the new changes and thanks for sharing it all with us.
👋🏻
So exciting! Still in the middle of my yearly Stargate rewatch.
Planing to finish it by the 31st and then restart it from the start on the 1st of Jan because I just can’t wait for more Stargate.
I don’t think I would have taken the career path I took if it wasn’t for Stargate so thank you and to all of the people that have been and will be involved in Stargate.
I’m hoping for lots of behind the scenes videos in the future.
Just to the east of Pasadena for me. If you have a free afternoon time at some point while you’re down here, check out of the Museum of Jurassic Technology in Culver City. It’s bizarrely retro sci-fi-ish, and has a great tea room on the roof.
I second the Museum of Jurassic Technology (and not just because it’s right in my neighborhood). It is one of a kind.
Excellent! It will be a beautiful exciting new year! Go shinning, Joseph! You are great, great, great! Best of luck and please, keep us posted! 👏👏👏
That’s very exciting news. Thanks for looping all of us in. I am not quite in Los Angeles. I am just down the coast in San Diego.
Love San Diego.
Joe, as you have been such a huge part of the show before and have doubtless prepped for events like this before, this time around are you feeling nervious, or excited or is it a case of just want to get started? Does that feeling ever get old?
I don’t know if I’d say I’m nervous, but it will be a very different scenario. Instead of spinning stories in the familiar environs of the Bridge Studios, we’ll be doing so in L.A. which is somewhat alien territory to me.
No worries, Joe. Didn’t you mention Sharky was originally found wandering the city?
I’m sure if you ask him nicely enough
he’ll be glad to show you around his home town.
Besides … I bet you’ll be so happily busy trying all sorts of new restaurants and having dinners with old friends and co-workers – you wont have the time or energy to become too terribly annoyed at the fact you keep getting lost trying to figure out
where this? or that? local street goes.
I, for one, know I’m much looking forward to all the new foodie pics! xo
Good luck with the VISA. Like Gilder said, do it NOW. Akemi and Sharky will love LA’s weather. No more frosty bits. And Sharky will be coming home again right? He is from LA I think I remember. Exciting about getting him a sibling. I think he will love the furry pal.
I’d love to see the pineapple make a comeback! We could use some fun little inside jokes that new viewers won’t necessarily understand but old fans will.
Would recommend Philippe The Original (French dip sandwiches), Dal Rae (Old school steakhouse restaurant, pricey), Bopomofo Cafe (Chinese American fusion cafe food/snacks & teas), and any of the Porto’s Bakeries (Cuban food and pasteries [cheese rolls are good]).
Been to all of them and they are great.
I would definitely look forward to what the writer’s room will cook up for the new show.
Thank you, Jonathan!

what did I missed?
You missed the new Stargate announcement.
Hey! I’m close to LA. I second the vote for Porto’s. Also a vote for Jitlada in LA’s Thai Town.
