I was speaking to my good friend and fellow writer/producer Alexander Ruemelin during one of our recent weekly zoom chats, and he floated the idea of writing a novel.  Apparently several of his screenwriting pals have taken this route, establishing IP and then selling the film & television rights with themselves attached.  It’s essentially what I did for Dark Matter to differentiate it form the pack and, after talking with Alex, something I’m considering for a couple of my pilots that have, thus far, failed to gain traction.  On the one hand, they’re pretty high concept and I have no doubt they would find an audience; but on the other hand, I would have to sit down and write a novel.  Years ago, I was invited to submit a short story to a dark superhero-themed anthology and it took me some nine months to write.  I’d hope I’d be a little quicker now, but who knows?

Next year is Sharky’s year!

Thinking of getting back into reading comics.  Last time I tried earlier this year, I gave up after checking out three underwhelming series.  Any comic aficionados out there able to recommend a great ONGOING series?  And, by ongoing, I mean a current run with the same creative team or writer?

That’s the closest I ever came to roughing it.

Apparently, Dana Bash’s lemon squares are to die for!

  1. I assume that “fundraiser” headline is a spoof. I Googled, no first-page match.

  2. Well, whatever you decide just let us know. We will check it out!

With Thanksgiving, it’s been a bit more difficult keeping up our Outer Limits watching. Some of these episodes are hard to get through but we did enjoy “It Crawled Out of the Woodwork”.

I hope your Mom is doing well.

    Have a great weekend Everyone!

  3. Hey, Joseph. I was watching a cartoon you wrote called The Country Mouse and The City Mouse. I’m happy to know you have a blog!

    1. Welcome! You have a lot of catching up to do! I’ve been blogging every day since late 2007!

  4. I’ll read your novel! But I remember the birthing pains you went through writing a short story. A novel must be daunting! You’ve spoken to several authors in the past (some of whom have had their stories adapted) so I’m sure you’ll be able to get advice from them.

  5. I envy anyone with the ability to write a full novel. The best I can do is either spec. scripts or short stories.
How about you try a graphic art novel/comicbook instead and work with a good artist if the long form novel is too big a challenge?

    1. Finding a good artist is a challenge – as is getting a publisher to pick it up.

      1. I know Joseph, I had similar challenges when I thought to make one from my Space Bunnies shorts, costs, logistics, and more, although there are plenty of eager (cheap?) students or young artists that might enjoy a challenge. Publishing? Self-publish to crowd fund? I’ve sold a handful of copies of my shorts over the last few years without having your kind of following.

  6. Your short story was kick ass, a novel would be very cool. A novella series would be great, short and sweet. I confess to reading staggering quantities of sci fi space adventures the past two years and I love standalones as much as series, but lately more short books than long from my fave authors.
