December 14, 2017: Shows I Will Absolutely, Positively, Finally, Check Out In 2018! A Top 10 List!

TWIN PEAKS

I loved the first season of this delightfully weird series; the second season less so.  Never saw the prequel movie, but I’m all sorts of curious to check out the new, 20 years later, series that has been both revered and reviled…just like the original.

Speaking of which, here’s another one that’s received its fair share of critical praise.  And, bonus – it stars Hugh Laurie.

  1. I’m probably the one person who didn’t enjoy The Crown, then. I was expecting more focus on Elizabeth, but the first several episodes focus a lot on the men around her.

  2. Loved the first season of the crown, especially John Lithgow. Loved ozark. Jason Bateman kills it. Loved the night manager. Hugh Laurie..awesome! Would also recommend doc martin (on Netflix) the quirky character development is so interesting!

  3. While both stories have their merits and are well cast, I found myself more so emotionally drawn into Victoria than The Crown. Victoria just seemed to place deeper focus on exploring the characters.
I enjoyed Vikings and Black sails but eventually got bored with both after the 1st couple seasons. To be fair, it’s because neither is genuinely my cuppa and I only watched because I was drawn to 1-2 characters in each. Thus, when those characters were killed off……

  4. If you do check out Vikings and find you don’t much care for it, try The Last Kingdom. Similar, but much more character rich.

  5. Found Ozark to be top notch. I’m one season into Kimmy and really enjoy it. Kemper is a hoot. Night Manager wasn’t bad, but…

  6. We freaking LOVED The Night Manager!

Just a note, should my infrequent posts be missed. On Dec 20 they pick up my belongings to ship to israel… including my computer. I head for NY with the 2 dogs on the 24th or very freakishly early the 25th.. drive to PA, spend the night.. and the 26th, I, my daughter and our two dogs will be moving to Israel. So from now until the end of January when we hope to have an apartment leased, I may not be on a lot.

    I’ll be back. 🙂

  7. You will love black sails. Sorry to say I don’t know any shows based around pugs. Sorry suji and lulu

  8. I loved the original Twin Peaks. Haven’t been able to convince myself to watch the new one. Definitely recommend Ozark. I didn’t realize until recently that Matt Smith is in The Crown. Have to check it out soon.

I had a Xen shunt implanted on my right eye last Monday. Went back for a pressure check yesterday. It’s 10! Hope it stays there. I go for another check on the 21st.

  9. If you haven’t watched it, I suggest Doc Martin. First couple times I watched an episode on PBS I wasn’t fond of it (or him), but when I watched it from the beginning on Netflix and then Acorn…well…totally fell in love with the show, and the characters. It has that ‘Northern Exposure’ feel to it, another show I simply loved. Just finished season 8, and looking forward to more (I do believe there will be a S9).

This past summer my sister and her husband went to the village in Cornwall (Port Isaac) where Doc Martin is filmed. This was a treat for my b-i-l, who is a huge fan, and a lesser treat for my sister, a Poldark fan, since that show is also filmed in the same general area. Sadly, she missed the Poldark crew by just a week or two. (She has a wicked mean crush on that Turner fella. 😉 I’m like, geez…you’re old enough to be his grandma! 🙄 )

RE: Night Manager. The bonus isn’t Laurie, it’s Loki…I mean, Tom Hiddleston. Also, it’s been commissioned for a second series. Just a warning… 😉

Did you ever try Taboo, with Tom Hardy. Not my sort of show at all, but so twisty I had to keep watching.

No, I’m a liar. A big, fat liar. I had to keep watching just in case Hardy took his shirt off, or something… 😉 (Hey, I’m only old enough to be his mother! Not that that makes it any less creepy, or anything… 😛 )

    das

    1. I was loving Taboo until the thing Winter and stopped watching after that. I just wanted to kick the writers.

      1. Yeah, I was angry about that, too. The only reason I watched it to completion was because I thought it was just going to be a one-off…but then they ordered a second season. I find that, in my old age, I’m not much for long commitments. 😛

        das

      2. Doc Martin is on VisionTV too. Really love the series, but having been to Cornwall, I can say that the people of Cornwall are like our beloved Zoie Palmer than ANY of the characters in the show!

  10. There are so many shows to watch since I’ve cut the cord. Dark is on my list and Ozark but haven’t had time yet. I’ve been finishing up Longmire, when I get the TV. .

My son is home, so the TV is usually on anime or Rick & Morty (that is one weird show).

I used to watch Twin Peaks a million years ago. David Duchovny was great in it. I haven’t caught the new one yet. I’m getting a little tired of these remakes though. Some shows don’t need to be redone.

Jumanji for instance, Robin Williams rocked that show. I don’t see how it can be improved. At least they didn’t make it an all girl cast though. I’m all for equality but I’d like some original female characters, instead of these leftovers.

The covers you posted yesterday were just stunning. My favorite was Mr. Miracle. It seems like it shows the quiet before the storm.

    Any condos stand out?

    1. The new Jumanji looks rather amusing. I am tempted… (Never saw the Robin Williams one…he was one of those actors I could only take in very small doses.)

      das

    1. Yes! Good Place is a fantastic show and totally rewatchable, I can’t wait for new eps.

      1. Ditto!! Love the Good Place!

Joe, definitely worth adding to your list. The humor is very well written and the cast does a perfect job with delivery.

  11. I have not watched any of these shows so can’t comment on them.

However I do recommend “The Good Place” on Netflix. It’s a quirky, light comedy. It doesn’t require a lot of mental processing and as a writer you’ll probably find it utterly predictable but if you liked things like “Haven”, “Warehouse 13”, and “Dead Like Me” you’ll probably enjoy it.

  12. Crown is so good, just beautiful framing and cinematography, and in addition juicy drama, I have to pause and google to read the real stories behind the series. Season 2’s ep on Prince Philip and Prince Charles had me blubbering. I’m also obsessed with Search Party and Dirk Gently, and SMILF is a terrific comedy that is not for the faint of heart. I can’t stop watching this Crown 2 trailer; I don’t care about monarchy, it boils down to a story about big abrasive families which is very relatable https://youtu.be/ME2umFQ_xBA

  13. Twin Peaks: I have never gotten into any iteration of it.

Vikings: A-MA-ZING. One of my top 10 shows of all time. And you probably know Katheryn Winnick? She worked on Student Bodies.

    to be continued…

  14. Syfy last night

    Superstition – 198k, 0.04 18-49
    Ghost Wars – 289k, 0.05 18-49
    Van Helsing – 358k, 0.08 18-49

There once was an awesome TV show written by two brilliant ex Stargate writer/producers that used to pull much higher numbers than these shows. I call this karma night for such a terrible decision to end that show.

  15. I would encourage you to watch Vikings. I have watched loved every season and Michael Hirst, writing all the episodes, have done an incedible job of creating a terrific world and compelling long term narritive.

  16. Vikings is on my list, was going to start it yesterday but, the wife wanted to se “The Firm” instead so … we saw that.

Can recommend Black Sails and Terriers, terriers was cut to short but Black sails have propper ending!

Fringe, have you seen it, if not, it is a must see!

  17. Narcos and Ozark are tha bomb !
And you listed a few here that i never heard of but now I am interested in The Night Manager.

  18. Love Jason Bateman, have only watched the first episode but plan to finish the season of Ozark.

As for the others, I watched Terriers during the original run. The others I’ve heard of but only seen a few scattered episodes.

I’m catching up on Major Crimes, Supernatural, Lucifer, Scorpian & Lethal Weapon. I’m hopelessly addicted to Hallmark channels this time of year. At least one Christmas movie a night in addition to my traditional fare of Fred Claus, Elf, The Ref, While You Were Sleeping, Die Hard, Red, and It’s a Wonderful Life.

  19. Add Dark to that list, It’s a “mature” Stranger Things, and replace Vikings with The Last Kingdom
