January 16, 2017: Dark Matter Season 3 – Day 32 Of 91!

Today was Bring Your Doggy Daughter To Work Day at Dark Matter.  For the morning anyway as I Suji had an early morning appointment with the ophthalmologist.  Alas, more health issues for our new (old) gal.  Like many pugs, she suffers from eye issues caused by corneal abrasions.  They’re recommending micro-surgery to address the problem and I am, as always, torn.  On the one hand, I want to ensure she doesn’t lose her sight but, on the other hand, I always worry about putting older pugs under anesthetic.

Anyway, she came to work after her appointment, got a lot of attention, sat in on a couple of meetings, and even had some great ideas for that Ishida Cruiser fight sequence.

It’s a fruit plate fit for a king!  Actually, an emperor!  Specifically, Emperor Ishida Ryo of Zairon.  And Akemi is the artist behind the plate.  Props Master Victoria saw her inspired doggy plates and asked her to put something together for tomorrow’s breakfast scene.  Not pictured: the vegetable trays for that heated Misaki-Teku scene!

Sadly, my inspired creations (pictured above – beady eyes and nose compliments of Akemi) didn’t make the cut. 🙁

Whew!  The cuts are coming fast and furious.  I’ve spent three straight days in editing, working Episodes 301, 304, and 302 (in that order) with 303 on deck next week.  And, with the producer’s cut of our first three episodes on the docket, you know what that means…

Yes!  Tomorrow, the polls open in our seasonal Name Our Episodes selection process.  Like last year, YOU will get the chance to choose all 13 of this season’s episode titles.  You’ll be presented with a choice of three potential titles (each of them dialogue snippets pulled from the episode in question) and you’ll be asked to pick one.

Here’s an example, last season’s Episode 207 poll:

“You’re not alone” were the words our Android used to console Nyx.

“It’s very…snug” was, of course, another Android line – this one a reference to THREE’s sassy transfer transit wear.

“The past has a way of catching up with you”was uttered by Nyx in her one-on-one chat with a distraught Devon.

“She’s one of them now”, our eventual winner, was Devon’s to the Seers, letting them know that Nyx had a new family now.

So, now that you know (or have been reminded) how it works, prep your voting helmets as we head to the polls in tomorrow’s blog entry!

Today, I leave you with a little something from the Art Department.  Commander Nieman’s Quarters concept, hot off the presses.

  1. That has to be the most beautiful plate of food I have ever seen. Akemi is incredibly talented. And am glad Suji is settling in well. I love that you and Akemi have chosen to give love to an older dog, especially one with some medical condition.

  2. Aww, poor Suji. I’m sure she’ll get the best care going, though.

Is there anything that Akemi is not awesome at? That plate is a thing of beauty. She should start a catering business!

I’ve got my voting helmet on, but it seems kind of tight. You best hurry!

I’ve spent a chunk of my evening dealing with VISA as, for the second time in less than three months, my card’s been compromised. I was actually contacted by the vendor from Toronto who was filling an on-line order for Alpine car head unit. He must have thought that the billing vs. shipping addresses being so different was sketchy, so he called me (since he even had my phone number as part of the order – scary.) I called VISA directly and they cancelled the transaction and the card. The person had basically ALL my contact information – home address and phone. Even the three digit number on the back of the card. Stupidly though, the guy gave his OWN name, shipping address and phone to have it delivered. So, I reported that already to VISA. (It’s actually a commercial/office type property in Dorval, Quebec., an electrician’s office.)

Anyway, it’s in VISA’s hands now, though I’m tempted to continue doing sleuthing on my own!

  3. Nieman does not deserve such great looking quarters…yeah, I am biased.
    Beautiful food creation.

@MaggieL – sorry not doing my OCD on the same FTL fridays.
So….this week friday the countdown will be:
    21 weeks and counting.

  4. Wow!!! Absolutely and artistically beautiful food plate! Hire that girl!!

Suji is soooooooo cute! She steals the show.

  5. @Gfroce: We’ve been hacked a few times now. It’s a hassle but the bank/cc companies seem to business as usual. You will probably never know what happened. 😡 I mean, I’d like to see someone in those wooden stock holds in the town square but…..

    Beautiful plate @Akemi!

I know you’ll do what is best for Suji! She looks so happy now she’s been with you for a few weeks. TLC works wonders!

  6. @Akemi – your food platter is too beautiful to actually eat — it is magnificent!

Aw-w little Suji will trust you to do what’s best for her Joe. If eye ointments don’t help the issue, perhaps the micro surgery is best. Follow your feelings on this one.

I think all the interior concept art for Nieman’s quarters are wonderful. How ever do you choose which to use?

Yay! Bring on the episode title voting!

Here at work they are taking away our vending machines full of tiny bags of potato chips, pretzels, granola bars, Lorna Doone cookies, etc. and replacing them with baskets of fresh fruit. I do not call that an equitable trade. Snacks do not always have to be healthy. Sometimes mid-afternoon you just need a carb or sugar injection. Sigh…

  7. Oh I am reminded of the fruit I have seen on a Thai buffet. They do beautiful work and not well noticed by the crowds.

  8. Agreed! That fruit plate is an artistic masterpiece! Way to go Akemi! Absolutely Gorgeous! xo

@Gforce Hugs. Sorry to hear about your troubles. Same thing happened to me in 2015 and I ended up having to “pay more” just to have added security placed on the card.

@Joe Apologies. Typed an email to send your way last week in the wee hours and only just realized today it did not transmit. I sent it along to your inbox a little while ago. No need to read it till the weekend when you have a day off.
    (there’s nothing requiring immediate attention)

Poor Suji: Well, you got her off the need for rear assist wheels quickly enough, I’m sure she’ll recover from this quickly too, She’s definitely proven herself to be quite the champ and tough cookie.

  9. Congrats to Akemi on amazing job, that fruit plate is gorgeous! Needed a long close up view to capture all the little details; what are those Dalmatian balls? Love the pomegranate and the spectacular mango roses!
I like your fruit plate too, Joe. It’s extremely NSFW. Is that what you were going for?

Love Suji’s black and white portrait. Suji is repped by CAA so expect a contract by courier for her script services.

  10. Great job Akemi!

    Can’t wait to start voting.

Delayed post for me, brought my son back to college yesterday and got home too late to spend too much time online. Six weeks until he’s home again!

  11. Aww didn’t mean to leave Suji out. Poor baby, dealing with something else now. When does she have therapy again?

@Gforce; ugh. Based on the info the vendor was given, someone whom you placed an order from stole your information. I’m always sooooo leary about giving out credit card information to order anything. You want to trust people…but you just never know. When I think about how much information I have been given by people when I worked at a winery…I could’ve shopped till I dropped.

  12. I just wrote a super long response and it didn’t post. Heavy sigh. I’ll try to remember all I wrote, but did want to compliment Akemi on the fabulous job on the food (it looks other worldly), that I loved the pictures, that I know you and Akemi will figure out what the right choice for Suji is. Also think I wrote that Suji was probably ordering everyone around just like she does Bubba and Lulu. She came to the house all sweet and shy, but quickly asserted her new self in the new world order for her (the new world order is truly heaven-sent for her).
