Dark Matter 208 Review: Old Faces, New Enemies by Tom Gardiner at Three If By Space

“Okay, I’m going to start my Dark Matter 208 review by saying this was easily my favorite episode ever. This may not be the last time I say those words, but the Dark Matter gang are going to have to work pretty darned hard to top themselves after this one. “

Dark Matter Takes A Vacation to the Multiverse in “Stuff to Steal, People to Kill” by Jen Stayrook at The Workprint

“Maybe it’s my affinity for fan fiction, but I LOVE stories that involve a parallel universe. Taking characters we know and love and flipping them around because of one change in the timeline gets me all gooey inside.”

A Sashurai’s Review: Dark Matter – Season 2×08 (Stop me if you heard this, two androids walk into a Raza…) by Sashurai at Blade of the Sashurai

“A delightful venture into experimental technology results in Dark Matter’s first profound arc into the sub-plot of parallel dimensions. Not withstanding a few kinks in the hull, this episode collectively straddles the space-fence with a fresh plot and sees the return of characters long distant from the series.”

  1. I knew that Marc Bendavid would be back. Had a feeling that would be the case as soon as I knew that a parallel universe episode was coming up. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if he was the one who latched onto the Raza with the shuttle, as they activated the blink drive to return to their reality. The only thing is that since this alternate universe Corso is just as evil as the original, he’ll probably get shot and killed again as well.

By the way, great three-parter Joe! Absolutely loved the space battles! Reminds me so much of Stargate, the way the ship fighting sequences are orchestrated. 🙂

  2. Oh, I almost forgot. That scene with Truffault in that pic you posted above. It reminded me of those devices used in the “Men in Black” movies, where they wipe everyone’s minds.

  3. Well, my goodness gracious. I do think our favorite actors had a blast with this episode, as Kathleen Wiebel (TV Fanatic) said.

SPOILERS! for those still waiting to see it — turn away!

We got to see our Corso, and a nasty twit he was too… launching a nuke at Portia (and poor miners) and then going at Three with a LARGE knife. It was so good to see Marc again!

This ep certainly was home reunion time, wasn’t it? We had Wexler, Tash and Commanders Truffault and Nieman… all playing together with 2 versions of the Raza crew. LOVED IT!! How absolutely wonderful!

Three must have been wearing a strong “come and get me, tear my pants off” cologne, and he got to kiss bad girl Two! Um-m… how many takes for those scenes, eh?

Four was awesome and scary as a blood thirsty emperor in the AU. Six was touching and sweet telling Five she didn’t save him this time. No memory wipe occurred. Two and Tash had awesome kick boxing on the bridge and Android to the rescue! All the hand to hand in this ep must have taken hours of choreography, practice and precision execution. Just – wow!

The special effects in this ep were outstanding and so beautiful. {I’m sending cyber applause} My favorites were: Truffault’s little eye shields & stunner, bad Two’s finger swirl against the med-bay force field, the red glowing pulse of the Blink drive engaging and the mystery shuttle jumping into FTL! Gee wiz, there were ship battles, the Raza diving in and out, zipping all over blasting away, two Androids meeting face to face, so touchingly! Poor Five worrying about Devon, not knowing he’s dead. That was clever having the dialog with Three & Five explain Nyx waited for Devon at the bar for hours and he never showed. Five’s expression was wrenching.

I agree that this was one hell of an ep, tightly written and very well acted & directed. Congratulations Joe and all the Dark Matter crew, this one should get an award for sure.

I’ve watched it twice since last night, and I’ll be watching it a few more times. I haven’t caught who spoke the title yet, “Stuff to steal, people to kill”. Only annoying thing is the damn commercials SyFy inserts when streaming from their site or via Infinity On-Demand. Hate the commercials.

Thank you, thank you… for a rip-roaring, amazing episode 208! I cannot type any more exclamation points, so imagine me grinning ear to ear.

Joe: Can we have a blog poll to guess who’s in the mystery shuttle?

  4. And thank you to the many sponsors of Dark Matter. I noticed the new commercial from Uber last night. Thanks for your support!
    😉

  5. Well, I just finished re-watching the episode without the distraction of Twitter. Seriously, I cannot pick out a part which was the most awesome.

    What a great episode!

  6. Watched the show twice so far, and will probably watch it again in sequence with the rest soon.

There are some really good scenes in this episode that have the mental juices going.

The Raza in the alt universe at the end is stuck without the blink drive or its shuttle. they are limited too only their hyper-drive.

As to who was on the shuttle speculation on my part leads me to think that it may have been derrick Moss, still looking like Jace Corso. and Fives Alternate, who have been released from stasis by alt Android. A bit of briefing by first Android would have brought them up to speed as to what happened in the original universe which is why they did a bunk with the hyper-capable shuttle.

Moss is alive and wanting revenge but wants to keep his identity hidden since he has all his original memories and access to private accounts and resources and doesn’t know universe ones temperament. Alt Five has her own reasons..

I am assuming that the two were kept on ice because Derrick Moss is for Ransom and alt Two is the Blink Drive expert and not trusted.

And that is one nifty set of eye implants that Commander Delaney Truffault of the Mikkei Combine has.

    Most definitely LOL

  7. Awesome episode! Great way to get Marc back on the show, as we all know that Corso was in the shuttle that snuck into our universe.

  8. I echo @2cats and @maggiemaydays comments! Loved this episode. Of interest without spoilers, the other two alternate titles for this episode were: “Our Own Mess” and “Nothing For Us But This Ship And Each Other”.

I’ve made it through half the reviews. So much to discuss!

  9. Great ep again!

But I wounder, did I miss it or, how did the alternate Raza get the blink drive? Since it seems five was never with them, wasn’t she the one that had the first piece from the beginning that made them discover the drive? Seems like the alternate Raza had it long before “our” Raza to!

  10. Wow, DP you’re a badass! I’ll re-watch and check out the fighting scene.

I don’t want to jinx any news about a renewal but fingers crossed!

  11. Agree with Scott’s comments. I was thinking the same thing (and when we watched it a second time last night I laughed and said, “Like in Men in Black.” Agree with everything 2Cats said.

I think what Six said to Five was dead-on.

  12. I still haven’t seen the latest episode. Apple tv has yet to post it. If you have anyone to you can call to get them to take care of this please do. I’m not sure who I can complain to otherwise. This is the second time they have posted an episode late. They’re pretty unreliable.

  13. @ Jon H: I bought Season 2 on iTunes, they usually post the episode by Saturday morning or afternoon. As of this morning (Sunday) still not available for download so I contacted Apple and complained. They responded with an email and said they’d look into it and respond within 48 hours.

  14. Thanks Maggie! I wasn’t sure where to send a message. I hope they figure it out soon. I was really looking forward to kicking back and watching it this weekend.

  15. Correction for the last part of my posting that said Alt two was mot to be trusted what I meant to say was that alt five was not to be trusted, since she was a child, and alt two hates children, and alt five is a stow away along with the boy.

  16. Apparently, SyFy hasn’t realesed episode 8 to apple yet…I really hate when they do that…

  17. That episode was just WOW! So much was happening. A re-watch is a must.
Really enjoyed all the reviews I’ve read so far.

This one is my favourite episode……
……a contest to guess who was aboard the FTL-enabled Marauder? 😉
