Sadly, it’s true. Amazon has elected not to move forward with the new Stargate series.

There’s not much I can add beyond confirming what’s happened. But I will say this…

Creator Martin Gero developed a new Stargate series over two years, ultimately crafting a show that offered a fresh jumping-on point for new viewers while deeply respecting existing canon. It was a series that avoided the pitfalls of several modern remakes and reboots by fully embracing the core of its predecessors: action, adventure, exploration, wonder, heart, humor, and found family. And based on that creative vision, the new Stargate series was greenlit in November of 2025.

As of today, officially, that original vision is no more. We’ll never get the opportunity to introduce you to that world and those characters – or reintroduce you to, and check in with, some familiar faces from the past.

My heart breaks. For the incredibly talented writers who worked tirelessly to bring this show to life. For Martin who maintained an unwavering positive outlook throughout despite the challenges, and who always strove to make a show that would honor the fans while welcoming a new audiences. And for the long-suffering Stargate fandom who waited so long and came so close to getting a show they truly would have loved.

As a fan of anything, this right here is the most disappointed I’ve ever felt. They gave us the Holy Grail and then took it away. Absolutely devastated.

  2. I was beyond sad when I saw this news. Stargate has always been my favourite tv show.

  3. If anyone (David Read…. are you listening? ) organizes a “letter writing” campaign in supportof Gero / protest of this decision, I’m in.

Amazon likely couldn’t get their head around a story where a nation’s military is shown as actual good guys instead of a bunch of oppressors. That would explain why a simple rewrite couldn’t “fix” the issue. They were devastated when they realized it would make America’s military look like the good guys while the war in Iran is raging on, etc. etc. It is what it is. We are in one of the worst eras for entertainment. An era where EVERYTHING has to be strictly and obsessively allegorical for some strange fucking reason, instead of simply providing escapism and good old aspirational storytelling.

Yep. Can’t alienate anyone to the point that it alienates everyone. Talentless clowns making propaganda, really. Stargate has been shut down, and thus untouched. I believe that it’s literally just to get the original talented crew out of the way so they can destroy it.

  5. Absolutely gutted by this. I can’t imagine how you, Martin and the other writers feel. Thank you for all your work on this and for the past 25 years. I hope it’s not the end, but I fear it will be.

  6. This is sad news for all of us fans, but I’m sure even sadder for you and the whole creative team. You have my condolences.

  7. What devastating news, and to think it came out yesterday of all days – on my birthday! I’m heartbroken 💔 for myself, for my Stargate fan family, and especially for you, the creative minds who have poured so much heart and soul into finally bringing our beloved franchise back to us.
Amazon sucks. I’ve cancelled my Prime subscription.

  8. I am so sad!!!! And have never been so mad at Amazon.

  9. I am floored! Whoever made this decision is an IDIOT!!

  10. This is just awful. As frustrating as it is for a longtime fan, I can’t imagine how heartbreaking it is for you and the rest of the team.

I’m praying they’ll sell the rights to someone who will do something positive with the show. And, of course, I signed the change.org petition. But, I know it’s likely not to be. We all experienced a loss with this. The creator’s experienced the worst loss. Thank you for your tireless efforts to honor and expand this fandom. We appreciate you and your efforts.

  12. This is a huge shame Joe, I’m with you, I was looking forward to if this was a success you could go back to finishing SGU. Would it at least be possible to tell me how you planned to finish SGU, what Destiny was supposed to discover?

Why did they do that? Is it so they can make some horrible super woke remake or something? That would probably kill the franchise forever, which would be incredibly sad.

    1. I can’t imagine someone who understood Stargate less than someone complaining about it being woke.

Bruh, it was about overthrowing tyrannical gods through an uprising of slave class people from day 1. Just because you didn’t understand a thing that was happening beyond shooty bang bang doesn’t change that it always had a progressive lean behind it.

      1. StarTrekIsBetterThanStarWars Avatar
        StarTrekIsBetterThanStarWars

Right… I think we have different ideas of what “woke” is. What I meant was that I don’t want to see Stargate turned into propaganda for alphabet nonsense, communists, etc. A slight but tolerable “progressive lean” is not what I’m talking about. Also, opening by attacking my intelligence shows me exactly who you are… Perhaps you should try to be better.

  14. You guys fighting back? Anything planned at least, to try? We most know! Anything at all?

    1. We’re of the same mind. I think we the fans have to go over the heads of Amazon and appeal directly to Jeff Bezos!

      1. No, not Jeff. It needs to be someone specifically working within the entertainment Studio. Peter Friedlander and Mike Hopkins are the ones you need to contact directly.

        1. You’re right. I listened to Jenny Stiven on Dial the Gate and she suggested what you suggested so I’ll be working on that. Let’s fight this!

It is an almighty kick in the man parts for Martin and all of the team, as well as the loyal fans but Amazon has made it clear that, despite what they told Martin and you guys at the start, that they valued the fans and wanted to keep the fans informed, it was a load of *****.

Amazon has comitted a Univerese sized own goal. They have stuck their corporate two fingers up at Martin, you, Brad and all of the team but, as they made the point of mentioning the fandom, they have said **** you yuou mean nothing, to us and to say that I despise the so called “execs” at Amazon does not even come any where close to what I am feeling.

I can not even begin to imagin how Martin feels (two years of his life and passion waisted), how you feel, how Brad feels and how the rest of the team feel.

I would guess that wretched and beyond angry would sum up most peoples feelings right now.

How dare they, how the **** dare they.

I think they god rid of them so they could Kurtzman Stargate. As mad as we are now… Mark my words… It will get worse… I just feel so bad for everyone who worked so hard to make it happen, all the hours they spent… I can’t imagine how they feel right now, especially Martin…

    2. I’m writing this message from France. This is really, really, really bad news.

Jo, please start a petition to keep this project alive—we will sign it!
      Please, Jo!

  16. Really awful. Very sad. Wishing you and team well

  17. It would have been far kinder and wiser for Amazon never to have green-lit this show, than for them to have marched us all to the top of the hill and marched us down again! And having marched us all down, they’re saying it’s the fans fault? This has to be one of the most extraordinary and saddest creative decisions in television history!

My initial response was angry and unprintable.

My second response was sadness. For you. For Martin. For the other writers and everyone who put their heart, soul, and time into this. And for myself and all the other fans out there.

My third response was hmm, maybe its time to dust off that SGU webcomic I was working on for three years after the last soul-crushing cancellation.

And now I’m back to sad again.

I hope that some day you and Martin and the other writers will be able to share what your vision was. I would be nice to be able to properly mourn what could have been.

Take care of yourself, Joe, and give Martin the other writers my best wishes. And now, I’ll go back to the railing and stare out into the uncertain future…

Joe OMG!!!! What a load of… I have no words, well I do… gutted and well… pants and I’m so sorry… WTF? xxx

  21. What a load of BS.

While I sure couldn’t 100% say I’d love the show before I saw it, all pointed to it being both new viewer friendly and still steeped in the old canon. In other words a WIN-WIN unheard of in the era of all the new reboots, offshoots, spinoffs etc. for all the other major IPs.

There’s simply no logic in cancelling it and breaking the hearts of all the people that took part in the development (including you, Joe) and so many fans that were looking forward to it after so many years of Stargate being off the air.

  22. I’ll be happy today to still have all the episodes that you wrote Joe. It’s already a lot. No one can take that away. I’ll be able to keep sharing that with my kids and that’s more than enough.
Just an idea for Christmas : If you could shoot an outline sometimes on your blog, I guess that those 3000 words would make a lot of us happy. Not about the new show, maybe about an episode that you would have liked to write on SGA or SG1. Like you did for Dark Matter.

  23. StarTrekIsBetterThanStarWars Avatar
    StarTrekIsBetterThanStarWars

You guys worked so hard for so long… Will you be able to tell the story you spent so many hours on in some sort of capacity? A stream with Gateworld of a dozen of you talking about it, a book, just SOMETHING? Do you think the plan all along was to try to break the fanbase apart to make their own complete DEI remake or something uncontested? Why else would they sit and do this to you and the fans?

  24. I am fan from my very childhood when i first see entry to SG series i fell in love

What the hell is the logic of what i read on the web? Like we gonna get quality show and nobody will watch? Like why? You do great show like GOT first season and you got tons of new watchers and fans like me who firstly heard of SOIF because of GOT, only because of quality of first seasons i finished bad show that started season 5

  25. I’m 100% that what was provided was close to perfection. If Amazon does not want it, so be it, I’m done with them. This was a clear “No” to this fandom. Whatever they will make, it will carry our name but not our soul.
For us, it actually ends now. All the years of hoping, organizing, struggling… we put up a damn good fight all those years. Thank TPTB for having been there with us through all this time.

  26. Sigh. I had been thinking all along about how you’ve always said what a process this is before something makes it to screen and how anything along the way can mess up the process and bring it to a screeching halt. I’ve always had it in the back of my mind that this could happen here and here we are. I did think though that it gotten so far along that the execs were committed, but I guess not. Very sad to see that Martin’s vision won’t make it to screen but also sad for everyone that’s been involved in the project so far with the hope and excitement that goes with it.

If the comment about it not having enough appeal to audiences outside the fandom is true, then they once again truly don’t understand how this works. Dedicated fans bring new people into the show. Losing existing fans doesn’t. Studio execs are indeed idiots.

    It SUCKS!

    1. StarTrekIsBetterThanStarWars Avatar
      StarTrekIsBetterThanStarWars

Exactly. I’ve gotten tons of people to watch Stargate. Now, whatever Scamazon makes, I will actively discourage them from watching.

  27. So very sorry. While I wasn’t sure about getting caught up in another show right now, (I mostly ‘watch’ tv while sleeping…), I was very happy for you and the team. This sucks. Maybe they feel that interest in sci fi has peaked, with ST and SW dominating the genre. I really don’t know what people want anymore. Us old gals like our British mysteries, while others like the bodice-ripping period dramas or reality shows (DWTS, Housewives, etc). American audiences don’t seem to want humor (sitcoms are no longer watercooler topics like back in the 70s), and the shows that do do (poo poo?) well are usually extremely gritty and graphic (GoT, for instance).

I do have one question – you went to Hollywood to sell the show, why not go to the CBC or whatever Canada has to offer? Is it a budget issue, or audience issue (neither big enough for what you wanted to do)?

Again – so very sorry, Joe. 🙁

  28. My whole family is sad about this. I’m surprised, they must not think there is enough money to be made?

I wonder if someone could buy the rights to it from Amazon, at least for a percent of the profit?

Is there anything the fans can do, writing to someone? I they did that for the original Star Trek, a grassroots letter writing campaign.

The IP is valued at around $500 million. If anyone wants to make Amazon an offer…

      1. How much I wish I had that kind of money!

  29. I admit that I was skeptical that even Martin, Brad, and yourself could recapture the old magic in a new show, but I was always willing to give it a fair try. This bizarre decision by Amazon tells me that I was wrong to have doubts and that you guys were working on something special. I regret that I’ll never get to see it. Maybe it doesn’t matter anymore, but it means a lot that all of you were trying to do right by the fans and also make something genuinely fun. Truly sorry that it ended this way and wish you all the best.

  30. I’m so sad about this news. Thank you for sharing this and the all insights you’ve already shared over the years with the Stargate fandom. I was looking forward to your behind the scenes takes and pics and now we will never know a new series in the way we came to know and love the past Stargate series. It really astounds me that Amazon has so little respect or understanding of the intellectual property it owns. Why bother owning an IP if not to invest and build it out for the future? Maybe we can chalk it up to the one constant of the industry, the executives don’t understand the creatives?

  31. This shatters my world. Star gate changed my life it sent me down a new path. an amazing path. I seriously want to cry over this. And being a 48 year old guy that’s been through some things…that’s saying something.
    May we know why?
I’m seriously thinking about closing all my Amazon stuff down because of this. If they cant give us this, I’m not wasting any more of my money with them.

  32. This is just so devastating. I really thought you guys would get the chance of making a whole new Stargate. you even had the old crew back together…
Cancelled prime, not that it makes a difference… but this is really so sad. I was looking forward to anything you guys have come up with.

In the time of mostly generic grey tv slush this was something I had high hopes for. Especially after the desaster of Stargate origins.

I wish you all the best and hope you recover from this terrible news soon.

  37. After just watching Dial the Gate with Jenny Stiven on as a guest, there’s a decent chance we can turn this around! But we have to act now!

  38. Questions.
Has this been done by Amazon to try to test/gauge the response by the
    potential audience?

Has Amazon had a secondary back up production in place?…..in case Martin’s
    wasn’t liked, wanted or needed?
Has there been an actual secret Stargate project in place lurking somewhere
off in the darkness? Other ideas…other approaches and producers?

Is Carl Binder actually the one to be blamed for all of this?
I will be sharpening my pitchfork Carl.
