Over on X, I’m reminiscing on some of my favorite sci-fi t.v. themes and rediscovered the opening theme to Deep Space 9 –

Magnificent.  Not as spectacular as the Star Trek: Voyager themes that is one of my Top 3 favorites, but definitely in the Top 5 or 6.  It actually makes me want to sit down and watch this show – which I have admittedly never really seen.  What do you think?  How does DS9 rank amongst your list of sci-fi favorites?

Hard to believe that our time in L.A. draws to a close in about two weeks.  I’ve really grown to love it here and will miss the neighborhood, the fantastic Melrose Place Sunday farmer’s market, and the dog-friendly Andante coffee shop on Beverly Blvd.

Oh and speaking of coffee, I met up with my friend and fellow sci-fi and Stargate enthusiast Jenny Stivens who used to work for MGM back in the day.

  1. I wasn’t a fan of the DS9 opening credits. I found it slow and “dirgy”. But it’s grown on me over the years.

It’s a very good show. Different from TNG and Voyager. Of course there’s plenty of average episodes as there is for any show that needs to fill 24 episodes of TV per season. Not as deep as Babylon 5 which was airing at the same time but the moral quandaries are not as black and white as they were on TNG which is much more interesting to watch.

  2. I’m following a YouTube reactor who is currently watching DS9 (she has just finished Season 3). If you don’t want to dedicate the time to watching the full episodes her reactions cover all the important bits of the episode. I’m enjoying seeing all these episodes again without the need to dig my DVD collection out of storage.

  3. Agreed, the DS9 theme is stirring and majestic. As for the series, well, I kind of mocked it at the start. A Star Trek series that did not take place on a starship? But, it really grew on me over time. I found it to be a deeply layered series with excellent character development and timely themes that resonate today. I now strongly recommend it.

  4. Hi to your friend Jenny. Before you go you should try to squeeze in a Saturday morning waymo ride to little tokyo So Akemi can browse for any imports she might enjoy. From what I’ve read, there is also a nice Saturday morning farmers market there.

Hi and much love always to Mamma Angela when you get home. xo

  5. Loved DS9 and liked the theme. But my good friend Keith, who was as rabid a TNG fan as I was, HATED the theme. In his mind, the TNG theme was: Action! We’re going places! Doing stuff! And the DS9 theme was: We’re just sittin’ here. Still sittin’. Still here.

  6. I love the theme to DS9 and I might even love it more than Voyager (and I was a Voyager fan). DS9’s later seasons are some of the best imo because TPTB at the time were burning out and basically ignored it irc. That meant more serialized arcs, artistic episodes, etc. The one episode where Sisko monologues to the camera is amazing. I hate that DS9 can’t be remastered. Ugh. It deserves it.

I happen to more or less be entertained by the new Trek and I think DS9’s existence is what allows some of how the new series to evolve as they have.

My own thoughts on the new series: I liked the start but Discovery was wonky towards the back half of the series. I liked Picard (the fan service was fun). Strange New Worlds has been satisfying to me in some ways and, regardless of other people’s opinions, feels more like old school Trek. Lower Decks was pure gold. Prodigy was incredible and I’m sad they canceled it. I’ve been loving Starfleet Academy. It has that hopeful, thriving message that made Trek, well, Trek for me (I adore SAM – favorite!)
    .

  7. DS9 had some pretty memorable episodes during its run probably one of my favourites would be season six episode 13 Far Beyond the Stars. Wow thinking that the first time I saw that episode I was a teenager and I love it as much now as I did then, however appreciate the subject matter now that I’m older. The first season no I really still finding their feet. I think like most shows but I think it really started firing by season 3. I think the character that grew the most across the run would’ve been Nog played by Aaron Eisenberg. Hopefully other people give you some great individual episodes.

  8. It’s nice both of you settle in and make a home wherever you are. Stephen Hawking famously said, ‘Intelligence is the ability to adapt to change.’

    Happy Friday!

  9. Hard to believe that our time in L.A. draws to a close in about two weeks.
    Already? Writing done?

  10. I loved DS9 and its grittier, more nuanced take on Trek for the time. As often with Trek, the first season and maybe part of the second was a little shaky, but once it got the Dominion story line going it was top notch. “In the Pale Moonlight” is still one of my all time favourite episodes of Trek from any era. And Garak is one of Trek’s best characters, ever.

Had you mentioned Jenny’s name before in the blog before back in the MGM days? Her name sure sounds familiar.

  11. DS9 got progressively more complex with richer world building that rewarded true fans, they didn’t bother with the soap opera device of constantly catching up new viewers, which now works so well when streaming.
And it pretty much predicted the 21st century upheavals we’re living through now.
But it always remained a show about a dad and his son and their found family.
