“Zoie!!!” is the reaction the Android elicits from my girlfriend every time she pops up on my laptop.  I’ve screened 11 of 13 prod cuts for Akemi and, to date, she loves the show, loves all of the characters, but is especially fond of Zoie’s Android – which leads me to believe that #zobot is going to be BIG in Japan when the show airs on SyFyAsia in June!

May 18, 2015: The Dark Matter Rollout! Introducing Zoie Palmer As The Android!

This was the breakdown that went out for the role when we started the casting process:

“CLOSER TO A WRY BUTLER THAN YOUR TYPICAL SCI-FI ANDROID/ROBOT. CONCISE, IMPASSIVE, YET SURPRISINGLY POSSESSED OF A SUBTLY WRY SENSE OF HUMOUR, he is an indispensable member of the crew since he can exercise control over all the ship’s systems. He’ll prove a loyal supporter of his fellow shipmates, risking destruction to secure their safety. IN TIME, HE WILL ASSUME A DOTING CARETAKER POSITION OVER THE YOUTHFUL FIVE. ALL GENDERS AND ETHNICITIES.”

Yes, “he” because, in the original pitch, the Android was male.  We ended up diverging from the source material by casting a very wide net in our search.  And, as it turned out, it was a wise choice because some of the very best candidates for the part were women.

One such candidate was actress Zoie Palmer.  She delivered a great first round audition and then, in her callback, wowed us with three very different, very impressive reads: first her original interpretation, then with a British accent, and finally with a Jamaican accent (let’s file that last one away for future discussion).

One of the biggest compliments I can give Zoie is that, in many ways, she reminds me of Amanda Tapping.  Amanda, as Stargate’s Samantha Carter, had one of the toughest roles in the franchise’s run, tasked with delivering all the technobabble in believable yet entertaining fashion.  And she did, time and again.  She was so good at it that she made it look easy – but as anyone who has tried casting actors for similar roles will tell you (like, say, me for instance), it’s anything but easy.  And yet, like Amanda, Zoie made it seem effortless.  She was informative, convincing, and delightfully compelling.

After she was cast, Zoie took the role and made it her own, fashioning a character that is highly intelligent and powerful yet, at the time same, marked by some very human, occasionally adolescent foibles.  Her Android is  more Marvin (Hitchhiker’s Guide) or Kryten (Red Dwarf) than Data (ST:TNG) – in many ways, more emotionally flawed than her human charges.  But, if I had to pick one word to describe Zoie’s Android, it would be “endearing”.  I have no doubt she is going to be a fan favorite.

May 18, 2015: The Dark Matter Rollout! Introducing Zoie Palmer As The Android!Working with Zoie has been a dream.  She is uber-talented, incredibly professional, and just a lovely, LOVELY human being. And possibly one of the funniest people I know.  Over the course of the season, I received more texts from her than any other cast member.  Some where script-related but most were simply weird and wonderful missives sent my way to, I suspect, keep me off-balance.  Some of my favorites…

  1. Big fan of the very talented Zoie Palmer and I cant wait to see the Zobot…I mean Android. And those texts had me laughing literally out loud.

  2. I really like that a female was cast for this roll. Although I really don’t know anything about these characters yet, I think it makes that character much more intriguing. But, the hair! Oh boy, that hair! It is such a distraction every time I look at that character. I hope I end up being able to watch the show without the hair taking me out of the story. Then again, if that is my only complaint for the show, I will be pretty happy as a viewer. #newhairforzobotseason2 🙂

  3. What a frabjous day it is to read the roll-out of the Android! Zoie will be the cynosure of all eyes on the show. She is multi-talented that everyone falls instantly in love with her quick quips and natural charm. Be prepared for fandemonium of the Android !

Love Clover!! She has the cutest milkshake ever! Her twitter feed is hilarious and never would have thought that I would follow a cat on Twitter, but her tweets always makes me smile and laugh. She needs to make a cameo on Dark Matter.

I feel like a kid again now…this blog definitely made my Monday. So excited for the show to air in less than a month!

BTW – I hope that Jelly is feeling better today.

  4. Hi Joe
I can’t help but think, in the 4th picture down, that Zoie’s getting a oil change.

  5. I am now more curious about this. I hope this was recorded somehow, would be such a riot to hear this >>>>> “She delivered a great first round audition and then, in her callback, wowed us with three very different, very impressive reads: first her original interpretation, then with a British accent, and finally with a Jamaican accent.”

  6. LOL! The conversation is hilarious! “I was there.: I was the chair, I’m that talented -I can play the table too… “

  7. Kryten not Krytek! 🙂 I was picturing Kryten when reading Zobot’s description. Series 11 and 12 of Red Dwarf was announced the other week, shooting in October. I’ll be trying to get tickets to a recording when they’re released.

Cloverblob looks pissed! Did you stand her up on one of your dates?

  8. I was soooo happy to hear about Jelly’s recovery. I hope you can get a second opinion. Maybe there is more that can be done for her? I’m running out of tears to shed if she should go anytime soon.

My next door neighbor of over 15 years died last Tuesday. Eight days in the hospital and then she was gone with ovarian cancer. I was trying to deal with that, then my mom has been sickly and got much worse on Thursday. She had tests in the beginning of the week, and I found out Friday she has pnemonia. She’s on antibiotics but she’s not really getting better. She’s 92 and says she ready to go. But she’s not going anywhere if I can help it. I know the time will come, but I’m trying my hardest to make it later rather than sooner.

So hang in there Jelly girl! You have miles to go before you sleep.

  9. Yeah, my favorite part of that getting-to-know-the-cast video is when Zoie Palmer deadpans, “I’ve never played an android. I haven’t played anything that even resembles an android. I’ve only ever played human being.” Makes me laugh every time. Her character is going to be a lot of fun.

  10. @Paloosa I’m so sorry. I send you my sympathy for your neighbor and prayers for your mom and for you. Hugs, too.

You know who that exchange sounds like? As if you and @Das were having a conversation. That is the way Das writes. Then I know I’m going to love her character if she injects some of that into the Zobot. Das never fails to make me smile with her comments. Watch out–Cloverbob will want a cameo in season 2 or else. Data on TNG had a cat; why not her?

  11. Félicitations pour ce premier round !
Nous avons hâte de voir le premier épisode !!

  12. PBmom: Data on TNG had a cat; why not her? Great idea! However, are you suggesting Cloverbob get a JOB?! I’m not sure how that would go over. 😉

  13. Woot!
Thank you very much for my new desktop wallpaper. ;)))
Me thinks Zoie might be channelling Cloverblob for the Marvin-esque parts of the Android.
Last pic of her reminds me of Astro Boy.
    Is it June 12th yet?
