Another day, another off-ship location.  This one a little harder to get into than your average space station.

Key Make-Up, Lynda McCormack, is all smiles – as usual.  The hair and make-up trailer is so relaxed, I think I’m just going to live in it next year and forego the apartment.

  1. One really distant picture of Torri??????? Ok, I will cut you some slack because until today I had not realize how “NICE” the gentlemen in the cast were!

  2. What’s with all the weird boxes on this show? 🙂 Nice gak though.

Feeling a bit better tonight. I was actually able to take some substantial food. Good thing too – not eating hardly anything for almost four days was starting to take its toll on its own.

Here I am now in Sedona, and based on the signs around town I’m wondering if I need my aura adjusted or my chakras realigned. Maybe it’s the other way around. I don’t know. I’ve always said that what most people need is a good purgative. But definitely not going THERE right now, thank you.

  3. I’ve been plugging the trailer to Real Life friends and Twitter followers. The show looks great! Kept meaning to say that, but I’m a bit disorganized most days and only think of these things in the middle of the night or when away from the laptop. It’s been a while since I’ve looked forward to a sci fi show with this much interest.

How’s Jelly feeling today? Hope she’s feeling lots better.

@gforce Hope you’re feeling better by now, too. ugh Sounds like an uncomfortable couple of days for you.

Totally OT: anybody have a good method for rotting dead tree stumps quickly but organically? I don’t want to use chemicals. The stumps are not sprouting, just a pain in the lawn mower when cutting grass. I read something about Epsom salts being a possibility. Anyone else try it?

  4. Oh, I also saw a sign for “The Dead Horse Ranch”, which I thought an odd, if likely acutely accurate, name for a bordello.

Wait, this is Arizona not Nevada?

    Never mind.

  5. Mailbag question! What’s become of Cookie Monster lately? I hope you didn’t forget and leave him locked in the crawl space back at the house in Vancouver!

  6. Nice pictures, Joe!

A friend commented on the picture of the DM cast I shared on Facebook: “Aren’t there any unattractive people in space?” If there are, I haven’t seen any of them in your cast shots so far.

@glowyzoey: I’ve had someone come to grind the stumps down. Usually the tree service guys. The lawn-mower interfering part is out of the way and what’s underground rots away on its own over time.

@gforce: I’m glad you’re feeling better. Now you can enjoy your trip – once you get your chakras in sync with your surroundings.

  7. @ gforce – Do you really think a bunch of Canadians are going to make a brand new TV show in Canada staring Canadians and it not get broadcast in Canada? I think not. How did you catch your latest ailment? Bad water out of your canteen? Fungus on your jerky stick? Moldy nuts in your trailmix? Glad you are feeling better. 🙂

  8. Great pictures Joe! Thanks for sharing all. What if you get in trouble sometime for showing too much or a secret?

Joe does anybody ever take your picture? Or, are you the only one wandering around looking like a tourist with a camera?

  9. I like Jean Brophey’s cap. Everyone seems pretty proud to be working on Dark Matter. I will proudly watch it!

  10. Cool! Ennis!!! Exciting, exciting. I hope Hamilton turned out to be a good day for you. I know Jelly will be feeling better soon when she can spend more quality time with dad.

Don’t forget everyone that Carl Binder’s show, “The Messengers” starts tomorrow (Friday) on the CW.

  11. @Ponytail: “Bad water out of your canteen? Fungus on your jerky stick? Moldy nuts in your trailmix? ”

    I say, pardon? 🙂

I probably picked it up somewhere on my travel day, Saturday. I would have been exposed to literally thousands of people.

  12. Follow-up to my comment on 15 April post: Another sweater-vest design for consideration by the SVRF team. Possibly the sweater vest to end all sweater vests.

Back here on 21st-century Earth, I mourn the apparent passing of the “What Not to Crochet” blog, whatnot2crochet.com, where I first saw some of these gems. 😂😢

  13. @gforce: Glad to hear you’re better. I empathize; extreme indigestion ruined many of my days between ’04 & ’12 (rare reaction to Rx drug).

  14. What’s in the big weird box?

That box looks like the box my company uses to ship one of our display booths around in. So, I’m guessing a display stand? Does the crew have to visit shipping/mercenary conventions to promote the Raza? If so, who mans the booth? I could see Number Four (Alex) doing a sword demonstration to lure in the customers…

    Mailbag Question:

All of your previous shows developed a “tech feel” to the props that were used; SG1 had the colored and glowing crystals, Atlantis had the water columns and the flat plates of Acrylic…er, I mean Ancient flat crystal tech, and Universe had the steam-punk tube radio, brass and steam feel.

So, I’ve been trying to get a grasp on what the “tech feel” of Dark Matter will be. Are you striving for a particular look or is it just an organic growth from the various prop masters involved?

    @gforce:

Sorry to hear about your illness…and on vacation too! But I am glad to hear you’re feeling better. It seems lots of illnesses were spreading in the general population this spring; colds, flus, and stomach bugs. A number of people I know came down with one form or another. Praying for a speedy recovery and more enjoyable wrap up to your travels!

Speak of which, hopefully this bout with illness hasn’t ruined your trip. How far south are you? If you’re not yet up to hiking, maybe you could do a drive along Rt 66 or visit Williams and take the Grand Canyon Railway for a spin?

    @jimfromjersey yesterday:

Well Happy Birthday! I hope it is/was a good one! July was indeed a popular month! Did your fellow April Birthday officemates hold a party? Seems with a large group that one big party for everyone would cover it.

  15. @gforce:

I should have read further up the comment chain, sorry. Being in Sedona, you’re south of Williams already.

I hear Oak Creek Canyon is nice…have you been there yet?

  16. @glowyzoey: A stump grinder is the thing you need. You should be able to hire one if you’re comfortable using large power tools. Otherwise your local, friendly tree surgeon will probably have one and do it for you.

Mailbag: Do you have trouble thinking of names for characters? (Well, apart from just giving them numbers. Talk about lazy! 🙂 )

I remember reading about how Douglas Adams struggled to think of names for characters. He started out with the unbroadcastable “Fartifuckballs” and gradually transformed it into “Slartibartfast”.

  17. The set looks awesome, though I never quite understood the narrower at the top spaceship door way thing. How do you get an extra large pizza through there with out walking on you knees?

  18. ~@gforce, hope you are feeling better, hate traveling and not feeling well.
~thanks @pbmom for the Messengers reminder, got it marked to watch.
Joe , how are your sister and mom getting along? missing moms food pictures, yummm..
Have a great day!!.. thanks for sharing the pictures of all the fun.(and hard work)

  19. @everyone: thanks for the well wishes! I’m feeling a bit better again today.

@JeffW: Yep, I drove down through Oak Creek Canyon yesterday. Beautiful. I’m going to see if I can find some shorter days hikes in the area over the next couple of days.

  20. gforce: A bug or something you ate? I was a little sick over my holiday but thankfully, just a few hours. Glad you’re feeling better.

Line Noise: I loved the name, Seven of Nine in Star Trek Voyager.

I’m not sure what’s in the box but the design is pretty cool.

Don’t leave us in suspense! How is Jelly Bean? (totally stole that from Ponytail, she has a great way with words 🙂 ) I dislike seeing my pets get old. It seems like just yesterday they were running and playing. 🙁

Did you hear about the controversies with Hugo awards? I didn’t, until I read Marko Kloos’s tweet about withdrawing his name from the list of nominees. Pretty sad. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/books/booknews/11517920/Hugo-Award-nominations-spark-criticism-over-diversity-in-sci-fi.html

  21. @What’s in the big weird box?

Could be Cake, the best cake ever. :). Lol anyway great pics!

  22. @Don’t forget everyone that Carl Binder’s show, “The Messengers” starts tomorrow (Friday) on the CW.

I hate how they’ve given that such a terrible timeslot, it implies that they(The CW) don’t have much in the way of faith in it. I honestly hope it does well and proves them wrong. I’ll be checking it out for sure.

  23. @Tam Dixon: pretty sure it was Norwalk virus. Still don’t feel that great even today, but I expect my recovery was delayed by hiking out of the Canyon while still so sick.

  24. It’s hard to believe Vanessa’s whip-cracking abilities are all that threatening when she’s always got a smile on. Either it’s because she’s an awesome girl having a great time at work or because you’re telling her a joke right before you take her pictures.

    I’m ok with either. 😉

    -Mike A.
