January 29, 2015: Torri In Town! Writers Tears! Dark Matter Production Day #15!

Well, look who it is.  Torri Higginson was on set today, kicking ass – as do most of the women on this show – as Commander Delaney Truffault.  A quick visit from the former Toronto resident – but I have a feeling we’ll be seeing her again in the not too distant future.

Two units filming today.  While main unit was in the mess and infirmary shooting the argument, the confrontation, the fall, and that weird kid moment – second unit was shooting at the airlock (for the unwelcome welcome), in the corridor (Zoie Palmer, as the Android, delivers one of stunt coordinator/2nd unit director John Stead’s favorite lines of the episode) and some of the quarters…

Guess who’s room we shot in today?

In what has become a post- lunch tradition, we partake in a little pre-set whisky tipple.  Today’s sampling – and antique Hungarian shot glasses! – came compliments of Line Producer Norman Denver: the delightfully named Writers Tears Irish Whisky.

Hey!  Sets Buyer Robert Steele celebrated his 50th birthday today – and we celebrated along with him with an Art Department birthday bash that included wine, cheese, cake, and really spicy sausage!

Today’s screen grab of the day:

  1. 50? “Youngster”!! – [btw, check your “notes” Joe, I’ve got temporal-anomaly-DAY coming up soon myself… just hope that I *don’t* have to shovel on it!]

  2. Great to see Torri! So glad that it sounds like she’ll be a recurring character.

I have no idea what the picture of the day is.

Just as I’ve almost gotten rid of my cold, it seems like I’ve picked up some kind of stomach bug. I’ve been sick to my stomach since last night and hardly got any sleep. It’s still bugging me.

Oh, and it seems I’ve pulled a muscle in my lower back.

I’m not complaining or anything, though! 🙂

  3. The screen grab of the day looks like your shuttle!!

Who’s room we shot in today? Alex’s!! Or a tiny rat’s!!

    Good to see Torri!!

    Happy birthday Robert Steele!!

    Why am I shouting?!!

  4. So great to see Torri! Thanks so much for the picture. And great news that she will be returning!

  5. Oh look, it’s Torri looking fantastic Thank you 😀

Love the name of the whiskey and the glasses. Is it silly to ask how it tasted?

    Happy Birthday Robert! 😀

    Brandon looks comfortable. 🙂

  6. Wow! Torri’s hairstyle perfectly matches my mom’s hairstyle from the 60’s and 70’s…how retro!

And now I just realized that I’m commenting on women’s hairstyles, so in trying to reclaim my man-card, how was the whiskey? I’ve recently taken to Tullamore Dew Phoenix. Irish coffee anyone?

    @gforce:

Get well soon! It is certainly no fun getting opportunistic illnesses one after the other. When Barb and I first moved to England, we were constantly getting sick (it was all the cold viruses we weren’t used to), so maybe some of your hiking travels exposed you? And I’m a fine one to talk about too much traveling 😉.

Or maybe it’s just the local germs.

And just a guess, but that screen grab of the day looks like it might be the inside of the shuttle looking through the cockpit windows.

  7. Funky hair for Torri. She looks like she is getting younger. I like it. Not the no non-sense alpha female dew from a previous show.

Oh Joe last night I was watching “Scorched Earth,” maybe you remember it. I was listening to the commentary by Martin Wood, James Titchner, and the DP (forgot name). Fun and entertaining on how they set up scenes and shots and settings. Interesting and educational. I know you have a Great new crew behind the camera but I do hark back to the days of Mikita, Martin, Waring, Gereghty, Deluis, Woest, etc.

  8. Thanks for the well wishes, folks! I’m feeling a bit better this morning, so hopefully I’m past the bug. The cold bug that’s been going around has affected almost everyone I know, even as far away as my friends in PEI.

@JeffW: I actually blame it on not hiking ENOUGH! 🙂 I really need to get out and do something more. If I’m feeling up to it on Sunday, I hope to get out snowshoeing somewhere around here now that we have a good base of snow.

Speaking of which, we’re supposed to get another 25-35cm tomorrow, this time coming from the direction of Toronto.

    *squints at Joe*

  9. My kids have fallen or rammed up against every surface of this house in every direction possible. It’s killing me to see sai braced up like a caltrop and stored on the floor.

  10. Hey Torri!

I’m seeing a trend with booze on the Dark Matter set. So…are you hiring?

  11. @Gforce Yeah, I saw the freezing rain forecast for Toronto yesterday and heard the Northeast was supposed to get some more snow yesterday and then again on Monday. We’re going to get some really bad rain Saturday night to Sunday morning. We enjoyed a few high 70’s and a low 80’s temperature and now we are down to the high of 50 and lows in the low 40’s. That is a little more normal for us this time of year. You might try some ginger tea. Ginger is great for nausea. Or if you can get it up there meclizine (which is found in the non-drowsy formula of Dramamine). Meclizine down here used to be by prescription only in the drug name of Antivert, but now they have it in Dramamine available over the counter. I’ve been megadosing vitamin D and vitamin C to try to let this cold that keeps trying to manifest itself from not doing so. I don’t miss the snow AT ALL.

    Happy Birthday Robert Steele!

Great to see Torri. She looks fabulous as always.

I agree with @JeffW on what the screen shot of the day is.

  12. @PBMom – yep, I’m all about the ginger for stomach upsets. Someone gave me some “crystalized ginger” a few years back for my indigestion and it works immediately! I find it actually better than Gravol (Dramamine) for nausea, plus with no side effects. They sell it here now in tablet form which I usually have on hand. It’s been a big help last couple of days. I also find chamomile tea works very well for my stomach.

Also, good luck with that cold!

  13. I agree about the shot now – it’s looking forward through the shuttle from what I guess would be the cargo area(?), and looking out through the front windows. And may I add it looks freaking cool!

  14. gforce: I’m glad you’re feeling better! Have fun in the snow.

Torri looks great! Her outfit is very sexy. There’s another one that doesn’t age. Is she playing a badass in “Dark Matter”?

The airlock looks very cool. The screen shot of the day? Is it the inside a shuttle craft?

I just finished this book and loved it! http://smile.amazon.com/Winner-David-Baldacci-ebook/dp/B001GUXJSI/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1422631116&sr=1-1&keywords=the+winner+david+baldacci&pebp=1422631127514&peasin=B001GUXJSI

  15. I think the screenshot is the inside of a shuttle from the view of someone slumped against the back hatch, just waking up to realize she is alone and trapped.

  16. I take back the “trapped” part and replace it with “leg-cuffed”.

The screenshot is the inside of a shuttle from the view of someone slumped against the back hatch, just waking up to realize she is alone and leg-cuffed.

  17. Happy Birthday Robert Steele!

I really like that 2nd picture, I don’t know why, it just catches my attention.

  18. Mmmm….Torri Higginson. 😉 Looking as gorgeous as ever! Tell her her new headshots on iMdb are just delightful. Such a darling smile. Can’t wait to see her back in some good action-drama sci-fi fun!

Um, no sock of the day?

Screengrab: I have to agree. Space barber shop.

    -Mike A.

  19. See what I mean about the hairstyles? I had to do a double-take the first time I saw this (as in “Why is my mom on Joe’s blog?”) Then I read the caption…

Very 1950s/60s/70s retro style. Torri wears it well!
